I need help with a new book I am writing ' 'Weers my socks 'n shoes ?' which is an historical - sometimes sad but always moving - adventure into the origins of Sheffield unrhyming slang.
'Socks and shoes' was a Victorian unrhyming slangosity for 'bicycle', as was 'beer and shandy' for 'handkerchief'.
I have a list of around four, but obviously need more to complete my book.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this literary offering has to be on the shelves in Waterstones by the end of April.
Lovely.

That's a point. I'll call it 'As tha' seen mi socks and shoes?' I need to phone my publisher to notify them.
I obviously haven’t had the prerequisite number of stella’s required to participate in this thread. I will leave work early and begin drinking copious amounts to rectify this error.
I'll hopefully be back with useful input in a couple of hours.

I have just come back from the library and according to 'Sheffieldisms from the '30's' 'Shirt and tie' means 'frog spawn'.
Sam its your lucky day,I have studied this subject for some years now,I have written a few articles on the very subject and can be seen in my latest work entitled "gerrup stairs or al leather thee"
My research has revealed the following, please feel free to use them for your own work.
Pie & Chips=Television
Meat & Two Veg=Telephone
Auntie Rosie=A Blind Person
Back Door=A Bus
If you look deep into the meanings, you can understand the higher level of logic required to translate the wording.

That's great Tango. I'll get on the old meat and two veg and tell Waterstones that the book should be finished on time.
Marvellous.
I'm reading 'Narthen, Thee!' by Septimus Throgmorton at the moment.
Lovely unrhyming stuff in there.
