I'm in the same boat Katie - too many late night over Christmas and New Year, plus I worked right through, and then a long weekend staying with friends has left me like a zombie. I'm just holding out for the weekend so that I can stay in and have a good catch-up!

Puttin some Iron into your diet could help you out.
Fish, liver, guinness ;) or maybe vitamin tablets.

Obviously sleep is a big factor but increase in the body's Iron intake will help too.
Also exercise makes your bodies furnace (metabolism) work harder thus producing "wake up" chemicals for your brain.

Try to get a little more exercise in your life (even if it is a 30 mins brisk walk a day) as well as some more Iron and you should start to perk up pretty fast.

I said this in another post earlier but in case you didnt see I'll say it again!

Have a hot bath before you go to bed, get some lavender/nutmeg aromatherapy oils and put them in your bath and on your pillow.
Try going to bed and waking up around the same time, and sleep naked!

Good luck!

I don't think trying to keep yourself awake is going to help as you won't solve the problem that you are tired. Whatever you need to do has to be to make sure you get a decent night's sleep.

I know what you mean - when I'm very tired I sometimes find it hard to sleep. It's almost as if you're too tired to sleep (odd I know).

Is it possible that you are now overthinking it? Are you lying in bed thinking things like 'If I don't get to sleep now I'm going to be tired and I've got to get up tomorrow' etc.etc? If it is, then there are a few things that I have tried that seem to work:

- Have a definite 'going to bed' routine. It's not always easy or possible to do this, but set yourself some target times for things like showering and getting ready for the next day, doing any paperwork (such as bill paying and so on), logging off from the forum etc. The idea is that you go to bed at a regular time each night more or less. You need to establish a regular sleeping pattern again, this is what they tell parents to do with young babies and I know it works with adults cos I did it. Even if you don't 'feel' tired, stick to your routine.

- Warm milk. I know it's an old wives tale but even if it's a placebo it might work because you think it is going to.

- Don't lie in bed watching TV or doing anything that requires too much mental effort. Ideally this would extend to your whole bedroom but I don't know your circumstances so it might not be possible. The idea is that your bed/bedroom is a sanctuary for relaxation and rest, not to be propped up watching Big Brother or doing paperwork. If you 'live' in your bedroom, then try investing in a comfy chair for watching telly or doing whatever.

- Read. Reading in bed distracts your mind from whatever it's been thinking about all day, so you get that definite break between your waking day and your sleeping night - occupy your mind with something simple or something abstract. I find doing Su Doku really helpful, even though it requires mental effort it's a different kind of effort I think.

- Clear your mind. If I'm lying in bed with my mind whirring round I start counting, or maybe even saying the same word (usually 'nothing') over and over. You distract your mind from whatever it's thinking about and the monotony of repeating the same thing makes you sleepy.

I wouldn't rush out and buy sleeping pills just yet but it might be worth seeing your doctor if you are having real problems as they may be able to reccommend some tried and tested relaxation techniques you could try, or offer advice on herbal medications you could try. But as my doctor told me, the last thing you want to be doing is either taking medication to keep you awake or taking medication to help you sleep because the first doesn't solve the problem and the second can create other problems.

Hope this helps, and sweet dreams :)
