View Full Version : I'm moving to sheffield - whats these areas like?
lynseyscott 30-04-2003, 09:40 PM HI, we were originally looking around derby, then chesterfield but didn't find any nice properties/areas for our budget (75 - 80K)so we now want to look at Sheffield which we will visit at the weekend. We are a young family coming up from Surrey so have been trying to get lot's of advice about good/bad areas/roads e.t.c. I met someone who has advised and helped me alot and she especially likes
kiveton
killamarsh
eckington
sothall
and has suggested te postcode S20 S21 S26. I would be really gratfull for any more information on these areas sepecially Killamarsh as I am going to view some properties there.
It's really good to find a website like this and I hope I hear from people soon

lynseyscott 30-04-2003, 11:16 PM are there any particular areas to avoid that you know of? What are the nice areas near crystal peaks called? How far is this from the main sheffield city centre?

lynseyscott 30-04-2003, 11:57 PM I was told that kiverton and killamarsh are lovely areas in sheffield and there postcodes are S26, S21 the person who advised me moved to the area becuase she says the schools are good there
alchresearch 16-05-2003, 11:42 PM the best thing to do is type the postcodes into WWW.UPMYSTREET.COM
It tells you everything about the state of the neighbourhood, from property, to schools to police coverage.
mouse 17-05-2003, 02:01 AM S35 Chapeltown, Eccclesfield, Grenoside /36 Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharnecliffeside, Oughtibridge and S6 Hillsborough, Loxley, Bradfield, Stannington, all nice areas in the north of the city and close to the Pennines and close enough to the city centre without the distinctive smell of the city. We have cows and sheep here and beautiful views of the hills and stone walls & its not at all parochial. Everyone is so friendly. We bought a 3 bed semi, gardens, quiet area and unspoiled views in a rural area for £68500. We don't advise Rotherham one bit, its in a dip and the air quality can be poor at times, we notice the change in the air quality as we approach the town.
PaulTansley 19-05-2003, 10:04 AM Not all Rotherham is in a dip.
Wickersley, Thurcroft and Maltby are all on top of a hill and are pleasant areas of Rotherham to live in.
Where abouts in the North Western hills are you Mouse.
anababa 24-05-2005, 06:51 PM i don't know a thing about sheffield while i'll be moving there to so i think people who answer you will be usefull for me too..
NicolaE 24-05-2005, 07:50 PM places that you don't really want to move to or as seen as 'bad' areas are Manor, Arbourthorne, Pagehall, Burngreave etc. These are all close to the city centre. However, the nicer the area the more expenisve the houses. The area around Crystal peaks is nice, but is quite a way out of the city centre.
Area's such as Woodseats and Hillsborough are nice and less expensive then areas like Fulwood and Ecclesall. I think you need to have a day trip and drive around the different areas, visit different houses in different areas so you have a better idea of where you want to be and what you get for your money in each part of the city.
Everyone has different opinions on which areas are nice, but one place where I've never had a problem is Norflok Park. Some people don't like this area but the houses are nice and quite cheap, and it's very close to the city. Not sure what the schools are like though, the best schools are in the most expensive areas! Can't really give any better advice then this as in the end it's up to you where you feel the most comfortable, and everyone has different opinions!

Hi Lynsey
Where are you coming from in Surrey? I am moving to Sheffield from Worcester Park in August. We have decided to rent for 6 months while we work out the various areas and then buy.
rubydazzler 24-05-2005, 08:23 PM I'm not sure that it'd be possible to get anywhere in Sheffield itself for that sort of budget?
Meersbrook/Woodseats/Norton Lees are pleasant areas with good primary schools and open spaces, good bus links to the centre and an extensive suburban shopping area at Woodseats.
However, I think you'd be looking at £90k upwards for a 2 bed terrace to about £120k plus for a 3 bed semi. New build 2 bed flats from about £100k plus.
The idea of renting for a while until you have the chance to look around is a good one.
Best of luck with the search and hope you settle down ok when you get here, from the country to living in a big city is a major lifestyle change. But Sheffield is a friendly place and you'll always have the Forum to rely on!
Ruby - bear in mind the budget applied to when the post was made, over 2 years ago now! The thread has been dragged back from the dead.
rubydazzler 24-05-2005, 08:27 PM thanks t020 - silly me - i didn't look at the date ..... what a waste of time!!
oh well, anababa might find it useful anyway :D
Strix 24-05-2005, 11:04 PM Note to self: read whole thread before diving in with both feet
bigkev 27-05-2005, 10:35 PM you could try aughton near swallownest, this is s superb place to live as it is only a small village well was a village but it is away from swallownest anyway. the schools are really good and you are not far from the motorway just up through aston and you are on to it. if you like riding then there is afew riding schools round here for horses. you have got ulley country park just down from aughton and there is rother valley park to go too. the hospital is not far from here just down the road and through whiston. I have lived here twice first in 1993 when I got married and when I split up from the dragon 7 years later I moved back here in 2004 and was glad to come back to it the people here are brilliant they will talk to you.
