Anthonybridg 10-03-2009, 12:40 Hi There Tim, You probably wont remember me,Iwas the Roady With the
Whirlwinds and I do remember all the groups you metioned.
Over the last 18months The Whirwinds surviving members
have been meeting up about once a month at least to wine and dine
together and chew the fat about old times.
This all came about because Dave Hawley died and we all turned up at
his funeral .
If you want to keep in touch let me know.
Tony.
Bassman62 10-03-2009, 23:47 Hi, I remember many of those groups/bands, our group the 'Drumbeats' played the Wharncliffe many times, there was also the 'Sicey' and the 'Shiregreen Hotel' in that area.
I'm still gigging having just treat myself to an new bass amp and I'll be jamming Wednesday night with Russ Dennet (ex Human League).
I saw " Bitter Suite" there a couple of times and "Ohara"s Playboys"
I saw Frank White there but I think it was roundabout 71-72, last time I saw Frank White was at the Pheasant at Lane Top is he still playing now?
Anthonybridg 12-03-2009, 12:12 Yes Frank is still playing he fronts a couple of bands with his name, he also teaches a great deal he regularly attends The Whirlwinds Re unions he is married to one two backing singers Jeannie.
WhiteFender 13-03-2009, 20:05 Hi, Played at The Wharncliffe many, many times with Joe Cocker,(Ex Avenger),Also played for the Cherokees with Jean Rogers who was 'Georgia' the lead singer along with Johnny Ryder in the Whirlwinds. She joined us after leaving them in approx: late 1964. Wondered if anyone knows of her,and if Jean is still around. We made her first record at Columbia in London.(Baby, what you gonna do)?She was absolutely Fantastic and had the potential to become a great star with a voice like Shirley Bassey. She lived in a pub somewhere in Crookes.I would love to see or hear from her again after all these years.

I saw all the bands mentioned, and many more but as my wife used to live there and her aunt kept the Sicey it was'nt surprising.

Pity you didn't post earlier; I've just sent this 1962 'Burns 6 String Bass' to France, the rarest 'Burns Bass' less than 200 made.

I used one with the 'Drumbeats' from 1963; bought from 'Cranes' in the Wicker, even used it on the 'Wharncliffe'.

WhiteFender 22-03-2009, 12:03 Cherokees....lead Guitar..........Pete Jowle.........Peterson, Still working the Clubs.
Cherokees....lead Guitar..........Pete Jowle.........Peterson, Still working the Clubs.PETE JOWLE!!!..........Of course I remember now, along with Barry, who let us jam on all the guitars on Saturday afternoon (Chris Spedding was a regular drop in) and listen to all the latest releases in the booths with the cans on!..............Pete was a tasty guitarist and nice guy, what does he do on the club scene?
rtgibson 15-09-2010, 10:23 I know this is an old thread but I saw Pete Childs (aka Pete York of Pete York & The Pontiacs fame) last night - 14th Sep 2010. He was my guitar teacher about 20 years ago and I randomly bumped into him at The Attic rehearsal studios - his son rehearses there and he'd gone to watch him. My dad used to do a bit of roady'ing for them back in the day.

The last time I saw them was around 1971 shortly after I'd left the army at the Hawthorne Club Cantley, where I was resident Bassist.
Bassman62 19-09-2010, 16:39 Got a photo of my old band 'The Drumbeats' in the 'Retro' section of this Saturdays (18th Sept) Sheffield Star along with a shot of me after I'd joined the army in 66.
As someone said there were so many Groups/Bands on the Sheffield scene especialy the early to mid 60s, we averaged 4-5 gigs per week (and held down daytime jobs) yet like most others never gat a mention in the 'Not Like A Proper Job' book
alicesmith24 19-09-2010, 17:45 I saw " Bitter Suite" there a couple of times and "Ohara"s Playboys"
