My vague (surreal) recollections are that is was somewhere down the bottom of the Moor, where Santas Grotto used to be. It was on a lorry and huge, but if you do have strange memories of it that are still lingering the truth is at hand..... see www.bigwhaleonalorry.com andyb npatchett 11-01-2004, 08:20 PM I never went to see this marvel but by god that website made me laugh. Just the thought of a lorry with a dead whale going round the country ammuses me :D Jon 11-01-2004, 08:25 PM ;) I remember it well pitsmoorboy 30-01-2005, 05:43 PM I remember seeing a couple of Pilchards on Commercial St. saxon51 30-01-2005, 06:11 PM Reminds me of the time (here we go again) in the early 70’s when a bloke from Barnsley stopped me on Pinstone Street and asked me where the whale was. “What whale?” I asked. “The one at the bottom of the Moor,” he replied. “I’ve just come from the bottom of the Moor, and I can assure you there’s no whale there” I said. Looking confused, he went on, “I’ve just come all the way from Barnsley to see the whale. Where is it?” “I’m telling you,” I pointed out firmly, “there’s no whale at the bottom of the Moor. I’ve just come from there, so I should know!” “But I’m neglecting my ferrets to see the whale! It MUST be there.” I was by now losing my patience. “Do I have to spell it out to you?” I ranted, “THERE IS NO ‘W, H, A, F, L, E’. Now sod off!” “And I thought us Barnsley folk were thick,” he said gloatingly, “There’s no ‘F’ in whale!” “And that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you for the past five minutes!” owdlad 30-01-2005, 07:40 PM The olduns are still the best Markham :D muddycoffee 30-01-2005, 08:05 PM I remember something like a whale, or shark where you entered the mouth and walked through the tail when I was a kid in the mid to late 70s. It was on the peace gardens, behind the row of bus shelters. On the grass. I think it was some kind of exhibition or display. It looked quite scary and I had bad dreams about it afterwards. Timbuck 30-01-2005, 08:51 PM Have look at this already posted...Originally posted by StatisTYKE for the full story see www.bigwhaleonalorry.com prioryx 30-01-2005, 09:16 PM Any one remember the Lancaster bomber and Spitfire on display on the Moorhead. They were covered in saving stamps for the war effort saxon51 30-01-2005, 09:20 PM Are we talking WWII here prioryx? muddycoffee 30-01-2005, 10:08 PM Originally posted by Timbuck Have look at this already posted...Originally posted by StatisTYKE for the full story see www.bigwhaleonalorry.com Crikey I didn't know that this was about an actual real dead whale. The one I remember was a huge man made thing. StatisTYKE 02-03-2005, 05:34 PM It was real. Just all the preservatives over the years mande it look wird and smell. It was caught off Trondheim Norway in 1952 and toured the whole of Europe and every town on this country until 1979. It visited Sheffield in the 50s, 60, and 70s. It caught fire at one stage while being displayed on Shepherd's Bush Green when somebody dropped a tab end in its mouth as they were waliking through. True Sheppyboy 12-04-2006, 08:32 PM Don,t remember a whale, but definately saw two elephants in a car park of what is now the days inn hotel nr.meadowhall, about 1981,from a circus that was in town....obviously or maybe not, well it is Sheffield. Joanl 12-04-2006, 08:51 PM Oh yes, I know this is an old thread but as I have only just found it I will have to say yes, I remember Jonah the whale. I can smell it now. It was on some spare ground around Division Street I think and would have been in the early 50's. I'm convinced I walked through it, but in some replies to a letter I wrote to the Star, they got to thinking maybe that was just how I saw it at the time being only young. Anyway, it definitely WAS there. hector 12-04-2006, 10:34 PM I've just been looking through paperwork left by my father after he died. Amongst the old photos etc. is a postcard and a four page leaflet about Jonah and his 'career' as an exhibition piece. Dad took my brother and me to see Jonah. My brother was too young to be bothered and it wasn't my idea of a fun outing - I would rather have gone to the library. Funny enough I now find the leaflet quite interesting! |
