Try Paul Powers' personal trainers in Malin Bridge.
My little brother (aged 12) goes there and has been going since he was 5.
One-on-one tuition, can be expensive though...
Think nowadays it is £20 per hour. Find a friend to go with you and split the cost :)

I train at a place on wellinton street in town near devonshire cat pub. Its a great gym to learn at and they have beginners sessions on Mon 8.30pm thurs 8.30pm Fri 7pm sun 12pm they also have a women only on thurs 7.30pm. Its about £4 per session. Check out the web site www.sheffieldkickboxing.com
Its a good mixed group of all ages shapes and sizes, everyone is really nice and will help you settle in. Even if you don't try this club try to pursue kick boxing as a hobby as you''ll notice an improvement in fitness, health and weight but most of all self confidence almost straight away!!
Good luck:thumbsup:

hi there, if your looking for a beginer kickboxing class i may be able to help, if you know where birkdale school in broomhill is then i do a small class there thats open to anyone. im only a coach tho im not a full instructor as im not a black belt yet and im covering the class for the year while our instructor recovers from an injury. that means that untill i do my brown belt grading there isnt any sparring for insurance reasons. classes are tuesdays and thursdays 4pm till half 5 price is £2.50 or £3.00 one or other cant remember. if ur intrested our first session this year is on tuesday 24th jan in the main hall. we do kickboxing, bit if ju jitsu self defence and a bit of bjj (ground work). the class i have is between 12 and 16 years old an almost all of them only started in september.

Sarah, Freddylee mentioned classes at Broomgrove Road in another thread - i think AFK (the gym mentioned on Wellington Street) run classes at Broomgrove Road. Try clicking on the link provided by sr1sag and maybe emailing them (the web site doesn't appear to mention any classes at Broomgrove Road, or at least not in the 'Training Times' section).

Questions for Freddy or Sarah.

Hi,
I have been thinking about taking up kickboxing and had a few questions I wanted to ask about the lessons at Sport Hallam.

1. Do you have to be a student or a member of Sport Hallam to attend and what is the cost?

2. What level of fitness are you going to need to participate in the warm up and classes?

3. Is it very complicated to learn?

Sorry so many questions but I'm interested in learning.

Thanks for any help with my questions.
Jebb:help:

Freddylee
19-01-2006, 13:04
Hi Jebb
1. you do not need to be a sport hallam member to attend
i think its between £3 and £4 per class, i dont know because im an assitant and i got a complimentry sports card for it.
plenty of non students and non memmebrs attend they just par per class.

2. the fitness needed is not a lot for beginer classes
surely its farhad and Co's job to get you fit?
if Farhad doesnt get you fit, tell me and ill give him a kickin in sparring for you :P

3. beginer class syllabus is dead dead easy to learn , more so than most martial arts

i..e basic boxing stance&guared, simple boxing punches , a couple of kicking and kneeing moves. maybe the odd block or self defense technique.

hey just wodnering
does Wayne still go on that night?
if you were there youd have seen him
he always wears a vest and red kickboxing trousers and he is well muscular, but ripped more than bulky, not very big
farhad moslty uses him as a demo partner

wayne is dead popular with everyone
hes a flashy kicker (but i coudl probably have him)
hes polite and helpful to beginers and always takes time out
and hes dead safe with everyone (and he pretends to take farhad seriously :P)

xsarahbabex

Nah freddy i only attend the classes on broomgrove road!!! Bout u, or do u go to both?

Where about r u atm if ur not in sheffield:confused:

let me know when you come down so i know someone else there coz there are different people every session with a couple of exceptions!

Sarah xxx

Freddylee
26-01-2006, 17:12
I go to both when i can
sometimes im in sheffield sometiems im away from home
depends where my flying takes me!

Both gyms are good
Broomgrove is more the "sports centere" environment with nice well lit decor and matted areas,..etc

The wellington street boxing gym is a typical back street boxing gym with all the punch/kick Bags ,boxing ring, speedballs , floor to celiing ball , even a concrete bag!

I prefer the welllington street class myself coz of the equipment
But both gyms attract a very friendly crowd
theres no attitudes no egos none of this slagging off of other martial arts that often takes place in certain gyms either.

Hi guys!

Im interested in taking up kickboxing too!!

Im a complete and utter absolute total beginner though so am a bit worried about it, esp. turning up on my own knowing nothing?!

I notice that you have a women only session on Thursdays at 7.30 and a beginners session on Thursdays at 8.30 at Wellington St - which do you think would be best for me bearing in mind Im a woman and a beginner??!!

Thanks,

xsarahbabex
27-01-2006, 13:04
--Trotterete--
I was in the exact same position as you a couple of weeks ago! I'd never done it before and i was going by myself...which i actually thought was part of the fun lol.
Firstly, I think you should come to the mixed classes! I've been paired with guys before and it's more difficult as they are stronger but you improve more as well. Also, in the mixed classes i would say there is an equal number of boys and girls (roughly) each session!
There's plenty of people who are either brand new or have only been doing it for a short amount of time so don't worry.

Sarah

P.s. see ya soon!!!

Freddylee
27-01-2006, 13:45
Hi troterette
there are classes on thursday at both venues
there is wellington street boxing gym
Both classes
laides at 730pm and beginers at 830pm are suitable for absolute beginers
on thrusday wellington street is tauht by kathryn and mark howarth
me and kathryn used to train in kids class togetehr back in the day
At the broomgrove road gym on thursday (and tuesday) you get to train with Farhad who actually tauht both kathryn and mark

both are good classes.
These are the classes you should come to as a new starter:
Wellington street:
Monday 830pm (with Farhad)
Thursday :
730( ladies) 830 (mixed) : tauht by mark and kathryn

Broomgrove Road
Tuesday 730pm
Thursday 730pm
Both tauht by Farhad (the head witch doctor himself:P)

good chocie of classes to choose from
ring Farhad 07775 914155 for advice or email the AFK on info@sheffieldkickboxing.com

Hi Troterette
you should be ok to come on tuesday i know that 730pm is a beginers class
just wear normal gym stuff and no shoes for now but you may need to get kickboxing kit off farhad when you been going long enuff.
its £3.50 per class at broomgrove road and £4 at wellington street.

Trotterette
30-01-2006, 16:48
Thankyou!!

Am still a bit unsure, but I think I'll be brave and give it a go tomorrow at the Broomgrove Rd one!!

See any of you then - maybe??!!

Freddylee
30-01-2006, 16:53
dont be too unsure, youre not going to get thrown in at the depe end
best thing to do is introduce yourself to Farhad and say your new kinda like Sarahbabe did and he will look after you well
hes good at that , dead patient with new starters which is why AFK is so successful in everything from bringing confidence into timid new beginers and getting people out of their shells, to the fully comprehensive grading syllabus and even to the ring (for the nutters who actually want to fight! granted most people arent really arsed about all that crazy stuff:P LOL ! )

Naah seriously youll be ok

if you have any doubts ring Farhad on 07775- 914155

Freddylee
30-01-2006, 16:55

Hi Sarahbabe and Troterette
what techniques have you guys learned so far?
im missing it down there and will be down to say hello soon
have you just learned punches and kicks ? or self defense too?

Freddylee
04-02-2006, 20:51
have you seen that guy called saj yet?
he is one of the instructors , the one who teaches the dangerous self defense techniques

Freddylee
06-02-2006, 14:47
Those self defense tehcniques are good to know. Example, head lock escapes, mount position, guard position, How to throw someone pinning you down,..etc
aint it a pity that a lot of martial arts claim to teach "self defense" but what they teach you will get you more badly beaten up than nothing at all

all of it is down to the quality of farhads coaching
look at the percentages of who got medals

Loughborough = 15 medals out of 35 fighters = 43%
Leeds = 3 medals out of 12 fighters =25%
Teeside = 2 medals out of 5 fighters = 40%
Newcastle = 1 medal out of 6 fighters = 17%
Sheffield (AFK) = 4 medals out of 9 fighters = 44%

Overall sheffield just shaded loughborugh by percentage of medals
Also :
Gold medals :
Loughborugh :
Ladies 57kg , Mens : -79kg/-86Kg/86KG+
4 champions for louhborouh

Leeds= ladies -63kg
Newcastle = ladies 63kg+
sheffield = Mens -64kg / -71kg

Teeside = 2 Silver medals (mens -64kg and ladies -63kg)

Overall Gold medal % :
Loughborugh = 4/35= 11%
Sheffield = 2/9= 22%
leeds= 8%
newcastle = 17%

Conclusion :
farhads team are possibly the best univeristy kickboxing team in the country

my instructors wtf 5th dan andy hill and wtf 5th dan paul oxtaby (40 years experience between them), will be opening a kickboxing club up shortly watch this space, short of students der! over 300 in sheffield alone, 4 trianing with the british olympic team,(which team do you train with freddy).

have they been anywhere near a kickboxing ring?

i seriously doubt it

LOL

oh yeah andy,.. sorry i mean claw, there isnt kickboxing in the olympics

claw
04-03-2006, 01:30
your right there freddy, but it would love to be one!. andy hill spent time in the ring at croft house youth settlement/hillsborough boys as a nipper to teens, mr OXTABY spent ten years practicing his skills as a kick boxer in the ring with a twice european champ long before you probably thought of putting gloves on

claw
04-03-2006, 09:58
Oxo has been doing kickboxing since 1986 trained with Phil Glover European champion and coached Glynn Page to English title WKA and has fought on WKA show.

Do you also know that kickboxing evolved from karate taekwondo and tand soo do.

The greatest kickboxer ever Benny the Jet URquidez was a tang soo do exponent.

Kickboxing is a cross breed of the above mixed in with western boxing.

Freddylee
04-03-2006, 13:10
benny the jet practised karate not tang soo do althouh chukc norris did tangsoodo

lets face it andy sorry "claw"
youve finally realsied that TKD is a **** style which is why your wantin to branch into kickboxing :P

TKD is on its way out now is it?
lookin at the TKD in the olympics which was really a bit of an embarassment to martial arts in general i can see why

so big deal if any hill spent time in croft house boxin gym,.. how many fihts did he actually have?

also i have heard that a representative for TKD was asked from the WTF which they didnt want to talk about :P
Karate and kung fu gave their representative , can TKD stylists no longer actually fight?

LOL

shred

can TKD stylists no longer actually fight?
I would love to see anyone from kickboxing fight at WTF OR ITF.
There have been many TKD exponents cross over to Kickboxing and MMa successfully.
Back in the day Owen Comrie WTF Rick The Jet Roufus Kenny Walton Elvis Parlsey etc and people like Mark Weir TAGB.
Kickboxing is not a style its a set of rules for all martial artists to particpate in.
Kicboxing came from traditional MA such as TKD Trad Karate Lau Gar kung fu etc etc
Get your history correct .....do you know what the worlds most popular MA is Taekwondo....Master Sken is a TKD master did you know that ....

FreddyLee is just one of those "our style/club is the best, why would you want to train elsewhere" kind of people, with a lack of MA knowledge and no respect for others.

Who cares if "farhads team are possibly the best univeristy kickboxing team in the country" (even though loughborough clearly did better with 4 golds)

Hi
WHAT A SMALL WORLD!!! I KNOW FARHAD PERSONALLY.

Farhad is very good trainer. There was another thread on here about some kick boxing classes etc, the title was 'childrens self defence classes'.
Unfortunatley Farhads classes were to far and a family member of mine goes to Adrain Abdalla's class (prokung fu), which are held in Hillsbrough and Woodseats. Check out their website.
prokungfu.com

Adrians very good too, inparticular for younger and more inexperienced students.

Whats JKD.
is there a website for them?

JKD is jeet kune do and is the martial art/concept devised by Bruce Lee. It often (sometimes) includes kali/escrima, western boxing, kickboxing, savate, BJJ, and a host of other disciplines. I believe that Mark incorporates some of the filipino stuff (escrima), and on another thread Inosanto referred to the class as JKD/boxing/kickboxing. Although i've never trained there, Mark has an excellent reputation and i'm sure he won't make you do 100 push ups for getting something wrong...(will you Mark?) :hihi:

Freddylee
22-03-2006, 15:58
lunnster just out of curiousity which "great britain coach" do you train with?

the only instructor ive heard of in woodhouse is a guy called terry
he does some tournaments and farhad refs a bit for him
not a kickboxer tho hes a karate man (terry) but he seems ok ive said hello to him and he seems polite etc

marsdens all styles is ok too i went up to train there a couple of times good blend of karate and kickboxing.

Freddy i think i mentioned some where before Any one can teach kickboxing it isnt real martial art you usually find instructors that couldn't make the grade in a traditional martial art i.e. Karate , kung fu, tae kwon do (they find it to difficult so leave before grading to a dan grade or black belt )then set up a kickboxing club ! and if you read any martial arts magazine there are loads of adverts saying that if you are a brown belt that you can set up your own club and affiliate to any association you want yes even WAKO. But i must stress that instructors that have already succeded in reaching Dan grade or black belt in their chosen style are far more reputable when it comes to teaching kickboxing , after all there are only 4 basic punches to master and 6 or so kicks ( most other kicks are variations of the basic kicks) Sorry to burst your bubble:( :( :(

what part dont you believe ? i suspect you are quite new to the martial arts and a little nieve, but that's youre fault, what you need to do do some research. I'm not saying kickboxing is easy, you need a lot of stamina but its more of an aerobic work out or combat sport rather than a martial art, as for the WAKO bit just pick up Martial Arts Illustrated from your newsagent. but must of all check out your grading syllabus.

what is a 'real martial art', and if kickboxing isn't one, what is it?

also, so what? some 'real martial artists' (i.e. traditional) entered early UFC's - look what happened there...

Anvil your right a lot of traditional martial artists were badly beaten at early UFCs however it was I think Royce Gracie that dominated the arena and again wasn't his foundation in a traditional art Ju jitsu ?

And as for kickboxing it is more of a combat sport as is boxing, fantastic to watch or train in however very impractical if your on the floor or in a bar or sat on a bus i mean theres no room to swing a punch or kick ! ;)

Freddylee
30-03-2006, 22:22
cavegal?
why do you say that an instructor with a KARATE black belt is mroe reputable at teaching kickboxing???

doesnt make sense really :P

surely anyone with sense would want to learn kickboxing off a KICKBOXER not a karate guy or taekwondo guy who simply sees kickboxing as karate minus the katas (which to me are outdated anyway)

cavegal
30-03-2006, 22:30
No youre missing the point, any one can teach kickboxing you don't need a qualification tthere are so many associations out there just after license fees that you can go to decathlon buy a black belt and set up your own class teaching your own syllabus, but if the instructor had a black belt i tae kwon do, or something similiar and had some basic knowledge of boxing then they would be far better to learn from than joe bloggs that had set his own class up .

Freddylee
30-03-2006, 22:35
but what if the instructor had acvtually been graded thru a mdoern kickboxing syllabus to black belt ?

and what if he had already competed in kickboxing (and were talkign about proper full contact bouts ) as well as haivng been thru the syllabus as well as the ringsport?

suppose he has also promoted shows?
suppose he has judged and reffed at tournaments and also at big events?

all that compared to a karate guy with a bit of boxing knowledge?
No contest!

the real kickboxer anyday!

cavegal
30-03-2006, 22:42
if you look at top kickboxers coaches or competitors since the birth of the sport in the 70s you'll find that the bigest majority have a traditional martial arts foundation,(black belt) start at Benny the jet then work your way through bill wallace chuck norris and the rest then finnish with the ki fighters such as pele reid ( or the Thai fighters );)

cavegal
30-03-2006, 22:46
Oh i forgot to ask whats a modern syllabus combination punches and kicks and loads of exercises, i cuold teach a novice that syllabus in less than a year, but try teaching some one 7 or 8 katas /poms then you would know what i mean.:|

Freddylee
30-03-2006, 22:46
not the majority im afraid
more of a minority

pele reid was ok at k-1 not brilliant tho

also the best fighters in k-1 are the dutch!

dutch kickboxers are the best

now then since you wanna compare notes,... mention some kickboxers (successful ones) from sheffield who have done karate as opposed to kickboxing :)

Freddylee
30-03-2006, 22:48

The Dutch kickboxers Ernesto Hoost and the likes actually have thei early years in thai boxing, Some had even come from kyokoshin karate,

Im afraid i dont know any Sheffield kickboxers never seen any on tv or in the star, but whats that got to do with my views.

Freddy you could really learn the syllabus in a year theres not that much to it
some one coming from a karate or tae kwon do, kung fu back ground could proberbly do it six to eight months and you know thats true:P

Anvil your right a lot of traditional martial artists were badly beaten at early UFCs however it was I think Royce Gracie that dominated the arena and again wasn't his foundation in a traditional art Ju jitsu ?

Brazilain jiu jitsu does originate from the traditional style but it has evolved so much, it is no longer classed as traditional. Basically they replaced your katas, forms etc.. with stuff that's more effective. Add this to thai/kickboxing skills gives you the ultimate combination.

ANVIL

BJJ could actually be termed a combat sport, and you're right, so could boxing and kickboxing (as could Judo, shootfighting, etc.), all recommended by the FOREMOST experts on self-defence in the UK, at least one of whom i train with and know personally.

BJJ does originate in traditional styles, as do most combat sports, but as barracuda points out it has evolved and it is so far away from traditional now, both in terms of how it's taught and the informal environment. Royce's skills are BJJ, a relatively modern combat sport/martial art.

Geoff Thompson, when asked, said if he had to choose one style for self-defence, it would be boxing. he's also trained in Karate (to dan grade), but advocates boxing, judo muay thai, etc. for self-defence (as opposed to traditonal martial arts, although he and most others in the field do actually susbcribe to specific RBSD training).

Other people involved in RBSD also seem to advocate combat sports over tradtional martial arts (for self-defence), and while they are bound by certain rules, it is widely recognised that a combination of for example, boxing or muay thai and bjj or judo would stand most people in good stead in the street, providing grappling and striking skills, stand up and ground based.

as i've said before on another thread, it's foolish to blindly follow 'experts', and i question everything and everything because it is in my nature, but i can't see any faults in these arguments, especially when they are based on the experiences (as well as theories) of people who have trained widely and regularly used their skills on the streets.

my aim here isn't to dismiss 'traditional' martial arts - i believe it's the ability of the practitioner that is important - rather, i'm trying to redress the balance because you seem to be placing a lot of stock in 'traditional' versus 'combat sports', and from what i know of the opinions of RBSD people, no one else does!

Ive been doing kickboxing for a few years now , won titles and yet i still feel i have a lot to learn to until i say i know every thing aout kickboxing . you say there are ony a few kicks and punches but to be trully you need to learn how to put punch and kicks together for maximum effective.

Im 21 and had around 33 fight (undefeated):hihi: and fought people from karate and tae kwon do and quite simply and i say that if your young and want improve your kicks and flexiblity do tae kwon do. if you wana learn some self disipline and and forms do karate. Im not putting either one down cus my little 10 year old brother is a brown blet at tae kwon do and my cousin is the swedish karate champion (yer he frm sweden).

How ever I have to say apart from these stand up martial arts BJJ is by far the best ground fighting martial art there is and watching the gracie family over year proved its a martial art which is proven to be successful and I would love to start learning more . presently my lil 10 year bro is teaching me some lol but the only flaw with BJJ is t is only useful in 1 on 1 combat situations.

Too true Sunny

I think saying that a martial art/style of martial art can be narrowed down to a handful of techniques is perhaps being a little silly, anyone can learn to Jab, anyone can learn a hip throw or evasive footwork to get out of the way on a kick, but it's the skill and experience need to draw all these things together that makes someone good at what they do, what ever the style.

Can't really comment constructivly on any other style, done Muay Thai for nearly 11 years and am bit of a puritan, did a bit of boxing and some karate when I was younger, obviously the boxing is still pretty much used almost everyday with training but know that Karate isn't nearly hald as effective as a tool of self defence and personally couldn't provide me with the same physical satifaction that Muay Tahi does.

katas are mines of useful techniques if you learn them from someone who can help decode them

Well would you take a Twix off a complete stranger that offered you one even if you'd never seen them in your life? I certainly wouldn't :hihi: Your hypothesis lacks accuracy as the data collection techniques used were based solely on acts of individuals dissatisfaction towards strangers offering them chocolate... i.e. not a true reflection of results :thumbsup:

You what!? I'm notorious for doing University work 39 hours straight with no breaks. Last night was Mickey Mouse stuff to me. I was quiet for a number of reasons:

1) I knew that the next day I would be doing an all-nighter for University work (which is what I'm doing right now).

2) I knew I'd get little sleep and had an early lecture to look forward to.

3) I craved chocolate and knew I wouldn't be getting any that night.

4) I consumed too much alcohol.

5) I'm an introvert and keep myself to myself therefore am regularly quiet.

6) I was upset.

The social was an excellent night out  I'm already looking forward to the next one...

Pain in the ass.
We have champions , we also have a multitude of kickboxers who have actually kickboxed in the ring (as opposed to the stuff on the mats that seems to be the rage at a lot of karate orientated "kickboxing" clubs).
You know how to find us if you want a good spar.
Strangely enough we now have started getting a lot of people crossing over from boxing as kickboxing is easily more exciting.

Davemantis
I have mixed feelings with regard to female only classes. I think its all about giving people what they want.Life is all about choices.
Two of my instructors teach female classes at the gym, I used to as well put soon integrated my female only class to a mixed class. You dont always get the numbers in female only classes and those most likely to stay tend to drift towards the mixed classes. Mind you they are good for absolute beginners.

well, thanks i think iwill, however further to my search i have asked one asian boy with brown eyes and he says that afk is a very good gym for beginners with worthy champions, as his chinese friend with black hair tells me that the wicker camp is the place that the experts go to. a small boy who lives near me with a short limbs argues that the abduller brothers of sheffield kung foo can not kick over a sandcastle, but who's younger sister with a wobbly tooth would not seriously recommend kondy ryu people....she learnt more moves in 12 minutes from E Honda on her cousins nintendo!! Help i'm confused!!

Pain in the Ass,
Asian boy with brown eyes? That narrows it down somewhat as does his chinese friend with black hair. Can I ask you a question, I am not totally devoid of humour but are you serious? Or on the other hand are you "having a giraffe mate" to quote the old cockney saying.
Translated into English " have a giraffe" = Have a laugh (larff to our southern cousins).
Wicker camp is an excellent Muay thai gym as opposed to a kickboxing club.

AFK is very good for beginners I will say again I am confident that I teach good technique and even absolute starters have their faults corrected as opposed to some clubs where they concentrate on the fighters and just take everyone elses money and let them do what they want .

My grading syllabus has very high standards and the beginners find that after their first couple of gradings that they are already capable of showing a high standard of technique.

As for the Abdulla brothers, Graham Abdulla was a renowed semi contact points fighter in the 80's but then again points fighting is about as far removed from kickboxing as cricket is from rugby. Adrian Abdulla ? Hand on my heart I had never heard of the character in any capacity whatsoever. The first I had ever heard of anyone by the name of Adrian Abdulla was when a well known trouble maker by the name of Shamraiz had stated that the aforementioned had made a few rather negative and disrespectful (not to mention unprofessional) comments about myself. Comments that in my professional opinion he was totally unqualified to make a statement on. I first dismissed the comment as Shamraiz is well known for not being the most truthful of people. Then further comments were passed to me by reliable sources and I came to the conclusion that there is no smoke without fire.

As for Kondei Ryu, he used to have two fighters of note. Pete Leaviss and Amjed Shaffique. Pete Leaviss has now joined the army and Amjed Shaffique now trains at AFK and I am proud to say that I can call Amjed a good friend.

As for E Honda, hmmm no way. Ryu kicks ass everytime, Ryu was my role model.
Regards and good luck with your search. If you pop by then introduce yourself but by no means am I going to beg you to join us :)

sorry i do not have any giraffe mates, but did once visit a friendly one in a zoo stood next to a tall grey elephant with a long lingering trunk, as i approached his friend (the one with the big floppy ears) he pointed me in the direction of a poorly postured white boy with rosy cheeks and yellow teeth. When i quetioned deeply the boy about the martial matters, he revealed the story of a mystical fighter venturing through the martial realms on a 33-0 flawless journey!! He is said to hold the belief that this >fine weathered warrior< is the one who must be beaten to earn the title of 'all sheffield master'. He talks of others one must defeat to gain the all conquering journey, but will say no more unless brought a pack of 4 red jawbreakers:loopy: I will never surrender!

ok chefkicker i understand the direction you wish to travel, although i disappointed you do not reveal to me any of the details from the quest 6 cagewarriors show. I leave you with a thought shared with me by Sarahboob, who filled me with praise for your kb academy, she has a suggestion that any champion in sheffield should fight any other champion or title pretender to raise money for charity in what should be billed as the 'all sheffield master' championship, it should be held on at the wellington boot boxing club. i to bring the trophies and compete for the title...i to invite Mr JD as first of my victims

2 facts:

1.AFK best kb club in sheffield

2.P.I.T.A 'all sheffield master' unitil defeated

Pain in the Ass Vs Sunny " The Snake " Singh sounds like it would be a good battle.

Thank you for your support.

If you're referring to Huddersfield town centre then I agree; if you're referring to Huddersfield Town Football Club then I have to disagree unfortunately :gag:

Sarah Babe
Are you training tomorrow at 830pm?
We had a cracking session today at 12, Blonde Lisa was there, so was our British Lightweight Champion Sunny the snake Singh and Kathryn " The Man Beater" Mapley.
Got a couple of rounds of sparring in with both of them and we concentrated mainly on Knees and Clinchwork.
See you tomorrow at 830pm?
How is the revision going?

The best advice I can give you Sarah is to do well on your exams. If not it will follow you for the rest of your life. So try and revise without the distractions :) Work before play ;)

Hi, id really like to have a go at kickboxing as i heard its a great way to tone up and can be fun.:) I'm also interested from a self defense perspective. :suspect: I've never tried kickboxing before though and i dont take regular exercise, although im not overweight and totally inactive. If i went to a beginners class what should i expect?

Hi, id really like to have a go at kickboxing as i heard its a great way to tone up and can be fun.:) I'm also interested from a self defense perspective. :suspect: I recently got into a situation where id have benefitted from some self defense. I've never tried kickboxing before though and i dont take regular exercise, although im not overweight and totally inactive. If i went to a beginners class what should i expect?

Hi Catt
Welcome to the AFK Kickboxing message board.
Kickboxing is good for all of the above fitness, self defense and fun. you will find that it tones up every muscle of your body including those that you never knew that you had.
As a beginner in the beginners class you should expect the following:
Firstly you will be nervous as it will be the first time you have ever done something like this, everybody starts somewhere me included.

1. Warming up = Most of them warm up by means of skipping (which is good for all round cardio and for coordination and timing) .

2.Stretching = At AFK we only use SAFE stretching methods. Most of the old fashioned stretching exercises that are used at a lot of traditional martial arts clubs ( and many of the clubs that use the name "kickboxing" but really are not) are actually ineffective and can actually be dangerous for your long term health i.e. your joints and hamstrings.
Any club that use "heavy" stretching or "static" stretches at the beginning are most likely taught by an idiot who doesnt understand sports science.

I can talk forever about safe stretching but I dont want to bore the readers :D

3. Basics=
The first thing I will show you is how to stand properly and how to move forwards and backwards the same way a Boxer does. Boxing and Kickboxing are very similar with respect to stance , footwork and punches , only kickboxing also uses the rest of the body.
Then you will be taught basic punches and kicks (possibly even Knees and Elbows too).

4. Power Development=
This is bagwork done with a partner , one partner holds the punchbag for support while the other punches it. You will be taught all the different punches and combination of punches.

5.Padwork= A variety of pads are used, Focus mitts , Thai pads and Kick shields. All are held and used for a variety of techniques: Punches , Kicks, Knees Elbows.

6. Defensive Techniques
You will be taught defenses against punches and kicks or self defense techniques.

7.Cool down and Stretch off

Each lesson Varies so I couldnt put too much about each part. Some lessons emphasise punches, some kicks some knees and elbows.

You will always get however:
Warm up(Skip and Stretch) , Pad/Bagwork , Cool down which all in all caters for the 3 S's Strength , Suppleness, Stamina

Hope this answers your questions.

Catt
