View Full Version : The Bernard Manning debate
deanprez 25-03-2004, 21:57 This could open a can of worms..........but here goes.
Sheffield wednesday's 'wednesday against racism' group kicked up a fuss because wednesday had booked bernard manning to do a spot during an evening dinner they had organised.
i personally have seen bernard manning on several occasions and enjoyed it each time....('Q' THE 'RACIST... MUTTERINGS).
(even travelling to his world famous embassy club on 2 occasions)
ok so he tells jokes about black's and asian's....BUT he also tells jokes about fat people, thin people, people with glasses, people with limps, white people, chinese people, bald people,...in fact he tells jokes about just about anyone and everyone !!
i think the biggest problem with some people today is their lack of sense of humour, and in some people's case their new found obsession with being politically correct !
i say...... "enjoy jokes for what they are....JOKES"
(this post has been made by a fat, bald, unfit, contact lens wearing man with a bad back.........who incidently IS NOT A RACIST !!!!).
Phanerothyme 25-03-2004, 22:08 He is a parody of himself now.
mojoworking 25-03-2004, 22:21 I'll concede that the fat oaf can be genuinely funny sometimes but, like that other racist, alleged comedian Jim Davidson, he panders to the Sun reader mentality who really believe the material in the jokes to be fact.
So, ultimately, Manning and his ilk simply perpetuate racism, homophobia etc
I'm slightly ignorant toward Mr. Manning. I know he tells racist jokes, but I've never actually heard any of them. Could someone PM me (if such jokes are verboten, even in this context) or post a link to some examples. This way I can be informed before jumping in with righteous indignation ;)

Sheffielder 25-03-2004, 23:15 The Bernard Manning protest originated on Owlstalk (www.owlstalk.co.uk) after it was revealed that SWFC were due to book Bernard for an evening down at Hillsborough. Owlstalk was then assisted by WISA (wednesday independant supporters association) in protesting against the event.
This event was viewed by many fans to undermine seriously all the work that the Owls Against Racism (OAR) team had done over the last year to bring together all communities under the football umbrella.
It's a little hard to swallow that on a Saturday the club are parading an anti racism message around the pitch and then booking this 'comedian' for 'entertainment' at Hillsborough.
Whether he is racist or not - his reputation goes before him and this alone makes this event unreasonable.
Before anyone posts replies to this - I would ask you all to pause a while and think about the damage that putting this event on can cause.
Thankfully the club pulled the event within 2 hours of Fattybear (Owlstalk Owner and Editor) launching a media protest that saw BBC, ITV, Sheffield Star, Radio Sheffield, and The Yorkshire Post amongst others featuring this as yet another embarrassing episode in an already embarrassing season for Wednesday.
OAR do a LOT of good in bringing football to the communities and this event would have damaged this.
Thanks for reading.

I haven't seen him perform for a few years, so he may have toned it down (I doubt it, somehow), but if you imagine every joke starting with a variation of this line...
"These two puffs/darkies/Pakis/Paddies/Jocks/Lesbians walk into a bar...."
...you'll get the general idea.
lets hope that richard pryor never makes a comeback... or the pc brigade will be frothing at the mouth:loopy:
Phanerothyme 25-03-2004, 23:31 who is this PC brigade? It's a term that gets bandied about a lot it seems, but like the infamous "they" - never seem to be identified.

I'd much prefer full jokes, to form an opinion. Much unlike Sheffielder, seemingly.
Sheffielder 26-03-2004, 01:29 Actually I am WELL aware of the material Bernard Manning uses and 90% of it I find extremely offensive.
One thing - if SWFC do go ahead with this event then I DARE them to put an asian or black waitress on.
Go on..
I DARE YOU
Then watch the press have one almighty field day with the results..
i think the entertainment manager at hilsbrough is asian now if he was offended he would have said so when they talked about booking bm ........ i can think about better things to worry about bm been at hilsbrough:loopy:

Well, here's exhibit A from the Sunday Herald online:
Manning to perform at BNP fest
By Neil Mackay
RACIST comic Bernard Manning is to perform at the biggest British National Party event of the year – the Red, White And Blue Festival.
His manager Chris Graham confirmed that Manning would be playing at the event between August 16 and 17 near Clitheroe in Lancashire.
Graham said: “I don’t see that Bernard playing the gig is a controversial move, surely it’s just the same as playing at a Labour or Tory Party event? It’s all work, isn’t it? Bernard doesn’t get politically involved. He’s not doing this as a favour.”
Graham said Manning was not a racist, adding: “Everyone is entitled to an opinion. People are fed up being told what to do and say in a free society.
“People can think what they want about Bernard, but this is not a political issue, it’s a paying gig. He doesn’t support any party, he keeps an open mind and will work with anyone.”
BNP leader Nick Griffin said: “This is a commercial decision by Bernard Manning. He’s deeply unpolitically correct and so are we, but I speculate that there will be plenty of jokes on us as well from him.
“Bernard’s style does include racist material. He’s got carte blanche from us. I’m sure he will stay within the law. If anyone feels offended then they don’t have to come along.”
Griffin defended Manning’s racist material, saying: “Britain’s PC-mania is pathetic. Nobody is hurt by a joke.”
The Red White And Blue Festival is both a political rally and “family day” for BNP supporters. Last year it attracted a crowd of around 1000.

Very sorry, I assumed you were looking for evidence that Manning is a racist.
I didn't realise you just wanted to hear a good joke :)
You were incorrect, then. I was looking for:
1) examples of his jokes, to form an educated opinion regarding his racism
2) any past history between Manning and Asian waitstaff, or anything for Sheffielder to have based his/her accusation on.
Sue, tired

If you like, I can quote an incident where Manning spotted a black women arriving in the club late and singled her out from the stage with comments like, "I didn't see you there, until you smiled".
That one any good to you?
mojo, mystified
I guess that it was quite a simple decision to cancel his show once somebody put two and two together.
I for one don't need any reminding of Manning's jokes to be enlightened as to what a bigot he is. The BNP stuff just confirms it (unless he has miraculously reformed and doesn’t know what the BNP is:loopy: )
Luckily people like Manning are doing their level best to kill themselves on our behalf. The sooner the better.
I think quite a few people may be a little bit blinkered where manning is concerned......
he does raise large amounts of money for charity, but then again people don't want to hear about that side of the man.
http://christie.man.ac.uk/PressRelease/2004/100204.htm
Notice that a few people have not heard any of his jokes,i suggest a night at his world famous embassy club in manchester.
you'll have a great night out
i stood and had a conversaton with him about football,he spoke of his love for manchester city (cracked the old joke about the new stand facing the wrong way....the pitch),his love for his 'dear old mam',told us where to go for a decent curry (and told us to mention him to siranja.(think that's how you spell it)...the restuarant owner who happened to be a good friend of his (this from a racist)....
i found him to be totally spot on !!!!
And did anyone see the documentry on him doing a number of shows in india.........??
must admit he did'nt go down very well (language problems).
'SUE'.......listen to some of his jokes here..................
MOD - link removed as site contains adult content not deemed suitable for this forum
"a joke is a joke"
All Bernard Manning is doing is an act...just like Roy Chubby Brown...I have black, indian and pakistani freinds so i'm no racsit...I like these comedians but everyone is diffrent and have diffrent tastes...If I dont like what im watching i turn the tv over its not that hard to reach for the remote....or should i just sit and watch something thats winding me up so i can come on here and moan about it?
and there is no bigger joke than Manning himself, no wait Chubby Brown too.....
so which comedian IS funny then..........
Oh I know its Tom O' Connor..............

According to the SWP, Manning knew nothing of the booking and said he would not do it. See here. (http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/1863/sw186318.htm)
Couldn't tell you whether he actually played there in the end as I wasn't there... not my scene!
The mans about as funny as having your todge placed between two slices of bread and letting a hungry rottweiler loose on it.
He's also not very bright, as for the charity work someone said he did, people do charity everyday and don't get recognised for it. Whats so special about a rascist doing it then?.
He deserves no credit. Look at Peter Andre - no talent either but he's keeping himself in the money.

This puts me in mind of Sheffield City Council in the 80's when they were at the peak of their leftiness. A time when it was equal opps for this equal opps for that. A time when mainstream ratepayers were forgotton about.
They had already banned Shirley Bassey from appearing at the City Hall because she had performed in South Africa (some irony there me thinks) but were quite happy let Chubby Brown appear, despite much lobbying from myself and a friend who saw his money making visits as very much at odds with their policies.
Double standards all the way, but then again why does that surprise me. I guess this situation is no different. I wouldn't go to see Bernard Manning under any circumstances lest you think that I am a fan.

I fail to see this as offensive. I know that I'm not black but there is nothing demeaning about that joke. She is black. It is dark. Black people have beautiful white teeth. She stands out.
My god some of you go way over the top don't you!
Mo, you didn't think the joke about the black lady was over the top?
She was singled out, taunted about her colour, told she was only seen when she smiled. In front of a large audience.
Hmm. . . I really think you could do with going on an equal opportunities course of some kind. It's nice to know that in the new millenium there are those who still think rascism is ok.

No I do not think is racist in the slightist. What was she going to see a 'racist' comic for in the first place. Perhaps she didn't see the comment as racist either like many other black fans of Bernard Manning. In instances like this it is often the white middle class/sandal wearing/Guardian reader who deems things to be racist.
I would welcome comments from some of our non-white members.
Exactly my point !!
it was said as a JOKE !!
I happened to wear glasses on a visit to his club a few years ago,and upon seeing me bernard manning turned his fingers/hands round to the point where he was making an imaginary pair of gigs, and saying "oi 4 eyes......joe 90"......and basically ripping in to me.
the place was packed,i shouted back something about his weight, everyone laughed INCLUDING ME.
my point is....it could have been someone wearing glasses, someone with a limp,an arab,an asian,a mexican roadsweeper.......whoever it was would have got the mickey taken out of them black or not !!
"a joke is for life....not just for christmas"
As you state about his MANY black fans, I just wonder just how many black fans there actually are.
oh and by the way, Im not a white middle class/sandal wearing/Guardian reader. I am actually a non-white member.
Yea, but it's still not funny!
Sheffielder 26-03-2004, 11:42 Apologies to all the racists out there who were looking forward to going along and laughing at the 'darkies'.
But I believe I acted responsibly and in the best interests of the club and the Owls Against Racism team.

She wasn't "going to see a racist comic". I omitted to say that the lady in question was a singer who was appearing at the club
In my opinion, there is a world of difference between a couple of jokes about black people and the reality of people being attacked, murdered and shunned because of their race. I make this distinction in my mind, but it's clear that to a lot of people, that distinction doesn't exist; racism is racism and racism is bad. That's fine.
But please do not try to dictate to me what I can or cannot find funny.
He's also not very bright, as for the charity work someone said he did, people do charity everyday and don't get recognised for it. Whats so special about a rascist doing it then?.

That's a typical, ignorant attitude. Good work.
And as for the black lady who attended his show - firstly, what does she expect from him, and secondly, he does it to EVERYONE about any physical characteristic. Lighten up.

I accept what you say mojo.
I can't stand the man myself and suppose I'm being a bit naughty prolonging the debate when I'm not really on his side.
However I found the comment earlier about the promotions officer at SWFC being Asian and not raising any objection interesting.

Funnily enough, I had to endure similar 'jokes' at school in Liverpool.

Personally I would turn down the gig and eat my shoes for a week. There is no excuse for supporting racism. Period.
Dont-Ask 26-03-2004, 13:22 We live in a land of diversity and toleration... at least I like to think so, the odd thing with this whole debacle is, I dont agree with Mr Mannings attitude, but as much as I have a right to say what I think, so does he, and ultimately if people want to go and spend their money, increase SWFC's revenue then so be it... It is however a valid point that his material is at odds with the clubs anti-racist policy so I tend to agree with the decision however had he sill done his thing I would not be there, but I have a right to choose... Is that not what we should all strive for? remember there are those in the world who do not have choice.
Incidentally I find Chubby Brown funny... I dont agree with his sexist stance, but he is funny, however I dont subscribe to his beliefs, does that mean I am in danger of being brainwashed by seeing him live?
Personally I think we are all going PC mad and it is about time we all stood up for own beliefs and feelings and said what we think instead of having hushed conversations in corners of the pub or our own homes, with out that type of debate and frank discourse how will we ever educate the bigots, and moderate our own society.
I have lived in the Middle East for a number of years, and know what it is like to be hated as a foreigner and Englishman, and until you realise the reasoning behind those comments, you cannot even start to change peoples perceptions... once you find out why, then lo and behold it becomes really easy to understand why.

I once did see Manning, and I was not impressed really, some funny stuff but very predictable.
I also saw the documentary about his shows in India, pretty sad really seeing him sitting in his hotel room, sweating like a pig, in just his white Y fronts.

I take it that you are referring to me. You are wrong I haven't changed my mind at all.
Nowhere in any of my posts did I say that I liked BM but I did not think that the example given by mojoworking of one of his jokes was offensive and I still don't but then I am not black. The only thing I can say is that if a black man made some quip about me not being seen in a snowstorm for instance, I wouldn't be in the least bit offended.
FFS he wasn't saying you are black so you are trash/stink/are a criminal, he was merely stating the obvious.
Can't speak about any more of his material because I haven't heard it.
Nobody has speculated why the Asian Entertainments Manager didn't say that perhaps booking BM might not be a good idea.
Anyway Lestat you are just trying to inflame the argument again. As I said I can understand why Sheffielder acted in the way he did. End of story.
Sheffielder 27-03-2004, 10:29 Does this bickering not justify my decision to try and get the event cancelled ??
See ?
Having Bernard at SWFC would have been a PR disaster..

Cue "Love thy neighbour" c1975
I think that's the whole point really Mo. Bernard Manning is a relic of a bygone age, and his style and vulgar humour is happily just about gone. Give it another few years and we can celebrate the death of these dinosaurs.
Can I ask you something Mo?
If YOU were at his show and YOU came in late and he singled YOU out as you were sitting down in front of a couple of hundred people... saying something like "eyup lov, can you sit down? You're blocking out the sun with your fat bum- mind you what do you expect from a woman that's took a night off from doing the dishes?".
What would you think? Honestly now.
There is a fine line between being offensive and freedom of speech and that line tends to vary depending on your perspective. I think a good rule is that if 'most' people find a statment offensive then we can regard it as offensive.
So here's a little test. After a bit of digging around I have found a classic Manning example. He is at a charity police ball in Liverpool in 1995 entertaining about 300 white officers and one black officer who he picks on.
I'd be interested to hear who your views on these jokes.
Warning: Some might find these staements offensive.
“Where is he? How are you, baby? Having a night out with nice people? Isn’t this better than swinging from the trees? – You’re black, I’m white. Do you think colour makes a difference? You bet your b*****ks it does!”
“They actually think they’re English because they are born here. That means if a dog’s born in a stable, it is horse.”
“They used to be happy people in the cotton fields, singing their b*****ks off day and night. A fella used to go around with a whip… ‘Oh, massa, give us another crack of dat whip. I love dat whip’…”
“A Liverpool docker went to South Africa for a job. The boss tells him: ‘It’s people like you we want here. Here’s a test. There’s a revolver, go out and shoot 6 n*****s and a rabbit.’ The docker asks: ‘Why do I have to shoot the rabbit?’ He got the job.”

That's an interesting point. Would we be offended if the jokes were about whites?
Someone earlier drew the parallel between Manning and Richard Pryor and, in fact, Manning claims his career owes its shift into obscene and lucrative overdrive to Pryor, the black American comedian.
For instance, here's a typical Bernard Manning joke: "The great thing about boxing is that it's always good to see two ni*gers beating the **** out of each other" (my censorship, just in case).
Would we be upset if "honky" (or a similar white slur) were substituted for "ni*ger" in the joke?
Of course not. The problem is much more subtle than that.
While Manning is clearly racist, he can also be very funny and knows his market very well. But while the man himself may seem like just a fat buffoon and a parody of himself, the dangerous thing about him is, however, the people he attracts.
Having seen him live many years ago, I can testify that he is capable of whipping a crowd of half-drunk, (mostly) working class, (mostly) white club-goers into a frenzy. And they laugh the loudest at the black and Asian jokes. It was a scary experience, believe me.
I think it's safe to say that there just aren't any race jokes that are meant with anything other than disrespect for the victim. I've said it so many times - there is just NO excuse!

You say that he is part of a byegone age. Are you sure about that? If that were the case then he wouldn't still be filling clubs would he. Radio Sheffield had a phone in on the day that this news item broke and I would guess that by far the greatest number of calls were in his favour.
Somebody made reference to the fact that his audience were Sun readers. Well like it or not hasn't the Sun got the largest circulation of any newspaper in the country? Does that not also tell you something?

I think most people would agree that these statements are racist but the question is are they offensive in the context of a joke?
Can classing a statement as a joke excuse anything or is there a line that can be drawn?
In the last quote from Manning he seemed to be accusing Liverpool dockers of being racist. If I was a Liverpool docker I would find that very offensive.
Another question. Who is being the most offensive - Manning delivering the jokes or the 300 white police officers laughing at these jokes?

But that doesn’t excuse his behaviour does it? This sort of stuff has no place in civilised and mature society. It doesn't stop at the club exit doors - it goes out onto the street with people that have had their bigotry reinforced...
"After all, a famous bloke on the stage was doing it, it must be ok... and everyone was laughing, so yea... lets poke fun at the Paki's... then let's demand they leave the country... bloomin ****... and if they don't go... Civil War! Let’s burn their houses and corner shops...chuffin illegal immigrants... taking our jobs... destroying our culture... we can't even fly our flag..."

I listened to that too, and you are right - the figure at one point was something like 80%. However, the context was slightly different to that which you imply. The “Referendum Question” was (paraphrased) “should SWFC have cancelled Manning?”. That is a completely different question to asking if people are in favour of Bernard Manning. don’t think that they should have done it in the first place, but people make mistakes. The smart ones learn from them.
Also, lets be honest… the Rony Robinson phone in is hardly chocked full of constructive informed discussion is it? It is however chock full of bigotry and intolerance.

I think that it tells you that the press use the owners agenda to manipulate public opinion to increase sales. Mr Murdoch… come on down!
slimsid2000 27-03-2004, 14:31 I have to say that whenever I have seen Bernard Manning on the TV I have found him funny. He ceratinly isn't PC but then I believe that humour needs to have a bite to it in order to be funny. The worst thing for British comedy would be if it became bland and totally inofensive. That is the problem with so much US humour.
ps. Maybe Bernard could play in goal for Wednesday. That way they may win a few more matches.
Well, that was ****ing patronising.

I don't know about the Entertainment Manager, but the Match Day catering Manageress (who shall remain nameless) is a right ugly cow. She has cheap dyed blond hair, tattoos all down her arms, is a chain smoker and has a voice like a fog horn. She makes Lilly Savage look posh (and femenin) by comparison. If she were about on the night Bernard could have a lot of fun at her expense.

It was meant to be patronising SusieP. It was also meant to be deeply reflective of the truth. Sorry if it might have been close to home for a few people.

Heard recently on TV;
"The KRAUTS have no sense of humour"
"The FROGS don't have a word in their language for victory "
"Greek blokes have moustaches so they can look like their mothers"
"The smallest book in the world is the Book of Belgian War Heroes"
"ITIE tanks only go backwards"
"SCOTSMEN are so tight, they only ***** in their own toilets"
Apologies for any offence, but would Manning have got away with these comments? The TV companies did, and they are clearly racist.

Ah yes, the good old rant of the bigot, racist and oft' BNP supporter. It's always someone else that's stopping them doing something - like abusing their fellow man - for no reason other than they are different.
The trouble is - there is no censorship within decent boundries - least of all on Sheffield Forum. Your continued presence confirms that, just like your continued "right to free speech". I have to agree with Phan'... it's just an Aunt Sally to justify your narrow mindedness.

That's so unfair - she hates men as well!
While we're on the subject of one joke shows, how about Goodness Gracious Me or The Kumars at No.42(?)
Variations on the theme of "Let's go out for an English" is the sum total of the entire series (both of them).
But it's not good form to mention this for the reasons already mentioned in earlier posts.

why is it that every controversial discussion (debate?) seems to end with a select bunch agreeing with one another and ganging up on any one with a different opinion from them. perhaps this is the freedom of speech you refer to? also why does the BNP have to be brought into everything. surely supporters of the BNP are so right wing they would automatically make it known to all and sundry. from what i can see, no-one on this thread has made any statement to indicate they are BNP supporters, so why the paranoia?
if you are going to throw BNP accusations around on every discussion of this kind, there hardly seems any point in exercising this freedom of speech you talk about. You may as well adopt an alias and answer your own posts.
also, can certain users please stop this annoying habit of pointing out people's spelling/grammar mistakes. not everyone is lucky enough to have a university education - some of us had to work for a living to provide for our families. it is neither morally correct or clever to ridicule others in this manner.

That's odd. Looking back at my posts I can't find anything that suggests that my opinions should affect yours, you seem to be putting words in my mouth. Just for the record, if I think that something is offensive doesn't mean YOU should think it offensive.
Our democracy is founded on freedom of speech however there are limits that have to be drawn and these are set down in law. I was pondering on how these limits are set and I thought it might be along the lines of a majority verdict or something - if the majority find something offensive then it is classed as offensive.
I was merely testing who did and who didn't find the quotes by BM I posted offensive.
If the reactions so far are anything to go by then they are swaying towards the inoffensive camp. Looks like I'm in a minority, I kind of assumed I would be though :(

Not really, these debates always degenerate into those who find racism acceptable accusing the rest of trying to destroy freedom of speech. The silent majority find BM offensive, it's as simple as that.
ah, the final piece in the jigsaw. what a surprise.
Killian, can I ask you a simple question?
In view of the fact that all I and a few others are doing is saying how repulsive and offensive we find him, why do you find the need to defend Bernard Manning and his racism / sexism?

As the actress said to the bishop - you can't have it both ways
i'm not. never even seen the man, although i've heard of him obviously. just accept that some people might like him. i have a handicapped daughter, so i know what prejudice is all about, but i don't go on a crusade evertime someone cracks a joke about handicapped people. if you read through these posts you will see i haven't said anything about Bernard Manning. i've seen Roy 'Chubby' Brown's videos. some people would find these offensively sexist, but i found them funny. wish i'd never become involved in this stupid discussion as no doubt i will be accused of being a member of BNP next.

Free market economics, Tony. If Manning truly was hated and unpopular etc etc, then he wouldn't make any money out of it. It would be unprofitable for him to do "those" jokes, and so he'd have to resort to different material.
However, since he's still doing bookings 30+ years after starting, then that would indicate that there's a market for his comedy. Why deny these people the right to see material they want to see? If they (as a result) were to go on a "Paki bashing" or whatever, then arrest them FOR THAT. It's like banning drinking, to stop drink driving.
The actress was quite happy for the Bishop to have it both ways - because the Bishop was paying! Think of Mr Murdoch like the Bishop.
Just to remind you of some previously posted Bernard Manning 'jokes'. Please let us know if you find these offensive.
Are these offensive?
so why are you picking on me , Tony, rather than the people who actually said they liked BM on here. is it because i'm female and easy prey. no, of course not, as that would be prejudiced. perhaps the others would defend themselves better.

Racism is not equatable to paedophilia. Surely even you can see that.
As long as it isn't causing harm, why ban it? Paedophilia causes harm. Incest and crack - sure, legalise them.

I'm afraid I take a rather cynical view of these things. If I may paraphrase the great Frank Zappa here: the most common substance in the universe is not hydrogen as the scientists tell us, but stupidity.
I totally agree with Frank. That's why The Sun is the most popular newspaper. That's why Big Brother, Pop Idol etc are so huge. And ultimately, that's why Manning is so popular. They appeal to the lowest common denominator.
I think a lot of people would pay lip service to SOME of Manning's jokes being offensive, but I seriously doubt if you would find a majority who would condemn him out of hand.
After all, he's simply voicing their fears, prejudices etc and all the PC posturing in the world is not going to change that.
By the way, where do you stand on black comedians and rap artists making anti white comments?

I personally treat it in exactly the same way. For the record, I also don't like Ben Eltons knob gags much either :D
As for stupidity, well yes maybe there is a lot of it, but is stupidity a reason to accept the unacceptable? Is it a reason to ignore it? Is it a reason to tolerate it? If you think the same as me, why don't you stand up and make it known? To do otherwise provides the bigots with sustenance. Thats what really happened in inter-war Germany! History has a nasty habit of repeating itself over and over unless we prevent it.

Yes, I could do that, but it would be wasted effort. You know as well as I do that the line of least resistance will always triumph over the best intentions of honourable men.
In other words, s**t will always float to the top.
I'm surprised by your comment, Susie, that racism and paedophilia shouldn't be equated. Both degrade the 'victim', both are expressions of power by the perpatrator and both isolate the 'victim'. If you asked me to rank them then, yes, I would say paedophila is worse than racism. But they are closely related and IMO both are disgusting.

That's why The Sun is the most popular newspaper. That's why Big Brother, Pop Idol etc are so huge. And ultimately, that's why Manning is so popular. They appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Those things are only popular because they hurt people. Simon Cowell telling someone how useless they are, The Sun ranting on about how Paul Dickov is an unforgivable rapist and providing us with a totally one sided 'witness report' when LCFC had recieved numerous reports about how their players had behaved impeccably throughout the whole evening. And the thing that people most enjoy about Big Brother are the arguments, where a house-mate is offended by what another has to say.
Incidentally, I read The Sun, quite enjoy Big Brother and really did not want that talentless fat bird to win Pop Idol.

If you asked me to rank them then, yes, I would say paedophila is worse than racism. But they are closely related and IMO both are disgusting.
We're (as in, me and Tony) are not talking about racism though. We're talking about JOKES about racism.
I disagree with you SusieP :P
These are racist jokes .
I still disagree with you, Susie. A joke about racism is liklely to be based on a racist premise. Therefore it promotes the racist belief that underpins it, unless it is a send up.

So because i find BM funny that makes me a racist and a bigot eh,and a BNP supporter to boot? i never knew there was so much stigma attached to buying a video.
As i said i know it isnt everyones taste, but why should i stop watching it just because YOU dont like it.
i am neither a bigot, racist, sexist or any other ist, and i would never ever ever ever vote BNP.
you have proved my point by trying to ridicule me for exercising my right to say i like this sort of humour, because it dosent fit in with YOUR way of thinking.
i dont think im doing any harm in watching this sort of material, and i dont go out and live the lifestyle that BM advocates.
I notice this forum dedicated a few pages to the ridicule of "spotters"
well im a plane spotter. did i go up in arms about it ?,no i didnt ,i saw it for what it was,a bit of fun
It also dedicated quite a few inches to slagging off people on the dole(the underclass). until recently i had spent six months on the dole.(and what was most amusing about that was some of the most insulting comments came from people who i KNOW were caught fiddling.) did i start a crusade? no i didnt
while you were having a good dig at spotters and the underclass, did you think to stop and consider the feelings of these people,no you didnt, you just carried on allowing people to express their views. SO THE CENCORSHIP YOU SPEAK OF IS SELECTIVE IS,IF ENOUGH PEOPLE AGREE IT MUST BE RIGHT.
this in my opinion is just what i have done, expressed an opinion, but because it dosent fit your train of thought its wrong, and what should be a healthy debate has turned into idealistic slanging match
I AM NOT REPEAT NOT A RACIST BIGOT
I find certain types of comedy amusing, simple as that, and i think its wrong for others to be telling me how to live my life. as long as its within the law. the day they make buying BM videos illegal ill stop, till then it is my democratic right to purchase them and laugh while watching them
And as for the pc stuff, the fact that some kid can run faster than mine is unfortunate, thats what sports day is about, the spirit of competition, winners and losers, its life.
the day these people turn their attentions to helping the poor, the homeless, the old and those genuinely escaping persecution, instead of nit picking at others lifestyles,we will all be better off
DONT EVER ACCUSE ME OF BIGGOTRY...........EVER

I think you’re accusing the wrong bloke here. BTW, I’ve still got some Jane’s Civil and Military listings in the loft. The difference is that racists and bigots pick on people not because they like plane spotting, it’s because of the colour of their skin, nothing else!

That poor black bloke.. yes it’s just a fact of life that he’s black, so let's slag him off. (irony / parody)
Sorry to be so robust with you, but hey… rant on. You're not being censored here while you stay within accepted limits of decency. I think that if you check my posting record you will find that I am anything but PC.
dragonsoup 28-03-2004, 16:01 I think the main bigots on here are the people who seem to gang up on anyone who doesnt conform with a certain kind of left wing, sociology, stick your nose up the nearest ethnic persons a.r.e. Creeps

Well at least too thick to use a search engine and to master the 'quote' facility it seems....
dragonsoup 28-03-2004, 18:49 What would I be wanting a search engine for then eh. with all the brilliant minds in Sheffield on this board it seems.
Im not a teacher, social worker or IT person nor am I working in local government or some other toss it off job thats why I cant reply with quotes or cut and paste O.K with Regency flock wallpaper and anaglypta though.
p.s. Gizmo dont let anyone call you a bigot because I certainly didnt read that into your post. You were just speaking your mind , I wonder if some of these people know what slander means. If you need a good solicitor let me know.

doesn't say much for the so-called moderators on this site that they constantly feel the need to ridicule those less fortunate than themselves academically. perhaps you ought to be reminded who actually helped pay for your apparently superior intellect, although that is a moot point as i would never stoop so low to refer to anyone as thick and i had only a meagre comprehensive school education.
Moneypenny 28-03-2004, 19:21 Although I can't profess to love Bernard Manning the way I love Roy 'Chubby' Brown, I must confess, I once watched a documentary on Bernard, and the racism and swearing is just his act. He never swore in the house front of his children and had very strict rules about them swearing and he does masses for charities. At heart he's a good man and what he does on stage is his job and is an act.

I feel we give less than we get most of the time. Anyway, "thick" was dragonsoup's word not mine.
As for the academia jibe, everyone in this country has the same opportunities. If some people don't take those opportunities it is their own fault.
Anyway, back on topic please.
dragonsoup 28-03-2004, 20:24 Sidla, that is the most arrogant statement Ive seen on this board only a wrapped in cotton wool, middle class nonce would come out with that rubbish. So you think all the kids in Sheffield have the same opportunities eh? that is utter rubbish. I started in a care home near the Manor Park Centre and feel it is only good luck and the care of certain people that gave me a chance to get on in life which is what other people think not me, before you accuse me of being big headed.
I think you ought to go take a look at what the other side of life is like.
Thanks dragon, but unlike some people on this thread,i allow others to express their opinions,i may not agree with them, but there you are, though i did think bigot was a bit strong for admitting i liked BM.to my knowledge ive never taken part in any nationalist marches,i dont support combat 18 or any neo fascist group, but then these people wouldnt know that would they, they are content to lable someone, which is no better than what they accuse me of.
the point i was making was general dig at people( the PC brigade) who,for whatever motive, like to change the way we live,to the point of changing set customs and traditions(i used sports days as an example)even altering trademarks to suit certain groups of society,be they black white yellow gay or whatever.
i myself have lived with ridicule,i grew up with a stammer so bad that if my house caught fire,it would have been quicker to fetch the fire brigade rather than try phoning them.but you dont see me slagging Ronnie Barker off for playing Arkwright in open all ours.but i bet theres a group somewhere that did.
we are never going to agree on this subject, because there is always someone with a counter claim, and someone who reads between the lines of what people sayso i think its best to close this thread, but i know i would never knowingly assault, insult or campaign against any race or gender or persuasion(see thread about asylum seekers) and if some think that because i like BM that i would, then thats their choice.
Thanks to those of you who have PM'd me expressing your support and not jumping on the bandwagon.
when 1984 was written he got the year wrong, free speech and thought will soon be dead though before too long.
and the bit youve been waiting for
I APOLOGISE TO ANYONE I MAY HAVE OFFENDED,but i still reserve the right to say and think as i see fit,its called democracy, and i still think Bernard Manning is a funny comedian

Are you trying to tell me that if you grew up in The Manor you've got no chance of going to uni?
Also, what makes you think I'm a "middle class nonce". I don't ever remember bringing your class status into this.
dragonsoup 28-03-2004, 21:06 Im stating as a cast iron fact that if you grew up in that area in the 60s or 70s maybe 1 in a thousand would go to university.
You brought class in to the argument by demonstrating what you really are and that is a left wing middle class elitist who has probably got some **** degree (sorry if you are an engineer) in sociology or some other complete waste of taxpayers money.

I don't have a degree and I am in no way 'left wing' (do people even know what that means?? ).
I take offence to being called a 'middle class nonce'. If I called you a "working class scrubber" I expect there would be outcry from the infamous PC brigade.
I stand by my original comment that if people don't take the oppotunity to go to university then it is their own fault, because everyone has the opportunity to go regardless of class. It may be a cast iron fact that most kids from The Manor don't go to university, but it is also a cast iron fact that all people from The Manor and from anywhere else in this country have the opportunity to go to university.

i suppose it is my fault then, that my family were so poor i had to leave school and start work to bring some much needed cash into the house? don't dare patronise me by even pretending that you understand. you don't even have the right to comment on anything like this from your privileged world.
Anyway, back on topic please. [/B]
that's right, start to lose the argument and then come back with this pathetic back on topic statement, then a couple of posts later you immediately reply 'off topic' to dragonsoup.
i now await the arrival of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich to back you up on this one.

Did you know that the government give out grants to poor families?
Tony, I feel I'm being forced to defend a position I don't hold. All I am stating is that BM should have the RIGHT to tell racist jokes. Whether racism is good, bad or worse than sex with a baby is of no concern to me in this debate.

that's funny, i don't remember any such grants in the 50's, but i'm sure you know best and will no doubt quote a whole ream of statistics to prove your point. obviously my parents were spending all these grants on booze and fags and conning me into going out to work, when i could have been getting a decent education and patronising poor people on this forum just like you.
There's nothing stopping you going to university today.

dragonsoup 28-03-2004, 21:50 Dont need to go there as I think life has taught me more than anything else. You can call me a working class scrubber all day and I wont bat an eyelid , because your opinion means nothing to me you are just another of the hot air brigade who takes everything far too seriously. I would recommend that you be carefull who else you address as a working class scrubber though.

SusieP, I just happen to disagree - strongly. I was just drawing the parallel to try to show that just because some people have a particular point of view that doesn’t make it right. This thread is full of people justifying racism.

slimsid2000 29-03-2004, 14:25 To be fair not all Bernard's jokes are racist/sexist etc. Even his fellow comedians cannot escape his barbed tongue. Here is a rather old example:
"Ken Dodd's got two new diddy men. Diddy pay, diddy f***."

Not at all SusieP, knowledge gives you power as they say.
I think that going onthe offensive with people like him is the only way that people will be... umm how do I say this?... educated! Pretending that he doesn't exist and doesn't matter will just let his kind carry on. I reckon that in 20 years his sort will pretty much have died out.

Then we are in agreement, just coming at things from a different angle :)
Educated is correct. Rather than shouting him down, or having him banned, I believe that people should be able to make an informed opinion. I mean, it's not a stretch to realise that not every black person is a thief, or whatever.
However, "I'm offended, get it away from me!" is a sad mentality that we hear far too often these days.
Absolutely! Maybe I get a bit terse, but if that makes people think then it's worth it. Leave 'em alone and they have no reason to question their actions, thoughts and speech.
If others who are ambivalent hear racism in its true glory as well as all its hidden agendas then they too will have the chance to see what the racists are like out in the open. Believe it or not, the BNP (like most racists) claims that it’s not racist. Give me strength!
qazitory 29-03-2004, 19:11 He is playing at Skeggy soon. Anyone wanna go?? :)
mojoworking 29-03-2004, 19:48 No one's really mentioned the appallingly unfunny Jim Davidson in all this. He may be more mainstream than Manning but he's not afraid to play the race card, either. At least Bernard CAN be funny, Davidson doesn't even have that going for him.
And, while we're on the subject of appalling so-called comedians, how bad is Barrymore? He may not be racist, but he sure is sh**e IMHO
mark steele is totally unfunny has a face what you want to punch for some reason:loopy:
Phanerothyme 29-03-2004, 20:03 nah mark steele is brilliantly funny. The Mark Steele solution on the radio was priceless.

Beaten only by the brilliantly unfunny Ted Rogers.
Interesting snippet of the Mrs Merton show on TV last night where Bernard Manning denies that there were any black people involved on D-Day. Racist? Hmmm...
Tyto Alba 05-04-2004, 15:36 Wednesday have never been regarded as a particularily racist club, but everyone knows that football has had it's problems with racism....but has done a lot to get over this.
Surely, it is better NOT to employ a comedian who has made his living and reputation as a racist. No matter what the content of Mr Mannings show, just the association of his name with that of Sheffield or Wednesday will give the impression that we tolerate racist comments so long as someone somewhere finds them funny. This is simply not true.
No one is denying Bernard Manning 'free speech', he is free to say whatever he likes......it is simply a matter of deciding NOT to PAY him to say those things at hillsborough.
I support the stance taken by Owlstalk and WISA. Well done.

Its a micky take of Bernard Manning….after he's gone a road to Damascus transformation and lost his racist and sexist ways. Its brilliant.

slimsid2000 11-01-2006, 15:32 It seems strange that as many show business people who have been around for years are given OBE's (or higher) why has Bernard Manning (one of the country's funniest comics for over 4 decades) never received a gong, or some sort of lifetime achievment award at the National Comedy Awards held each December.
I know he isn't very PC but then surley comedy should have an edge to it rather than be bland and innofensive.
