View Full Version : What to do on a long haul flight?
Classic Rock 11-03-2004, 13:22 I'm so looking forward to an 11 hour flight next month. What can I do to keep myself occupied?
I know about walking around to prevent Thrombosis, I'm just thinking of ways to avoid boredom. All ideas, no matter how crazy, zany or funny are welcome.
DaBouncer 11-03-2004, 13:23 40gb Mp3 player should help you along
Where you off to?
Classic Rock 11-03-2004, 13:25 Thailand. I have the music sorted, but nobody wants to sit still listening to music for 11 hours - it would drive me potty!
I'd recommend getting drunk, smoking in the toilets, making a few bomb jokes and generally abusing fellow passengers. It's a British tradition you know!;)
DaBouncer 11-03-2004, 13:33 With this new MP3 player of mine I can record via line in (as well as USB) and via a built in mic. So why not record a movie (obviosuly just the sound), but if you've seen the film you can sit and listen to it and re-run it in your head.
Take some cards too.
I like Zamo's suggestions, however I think smoking in the toilets is going too far :) Shagging in them on the other hand....
fnkysknky 11-03-2004, 13:39 Or get an audio book, that would make more sense than listening to a films audio stream....
I'd be content with lots of music, a good book or two and some sleep :D
Babooshka 11-03-2004, 13:50 11 hours is nothing. You won't be bored. Have a bevvy, watch the films. Chat to whomever is sitting next to you. Just don't give the cabin crew any grief! Hope you are travelling with BA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fnkysknky 11-03-2004, 13:52 Come to think of it - even though I've been on some ridiculously long flights I've never sat in the cabin - always been on a jump seat in the cockpit :D

Yeah Audio books are great, but you don't get the feel of the movie. If you actually record the movie you get all the sound FX, music acting exactly as you watched.
Sleeping is also a good idea!
jackthedog 11-03-2004, 13:54 I've always loaded up my bag with magazines and Cds and stuff to avoid boredom, but never use em in the end.
Just dont seem to get bored when I'm travelling.
Just sit back, have a cold, free beer and relax.
(except for those doing those stretches to avoid DVT...)
Babooshka 11-03-2004, 13:56 Gone are your cockpit days fnkysknky ! Get down the back with the rest of 'em !
Yeah, travellling is never boring! There is always something going on somewhere!
When I went over to Ireland last May on a plane, I just slept.. which was a bit crap given that it was my first time.
DaBouncer 11-03-2004, 13:59 You slept :o For a whole 40 minutes :o Dear Lord
Sarcasm intended

Yeah true - I haven't been on a long haul for a while though. Flown a fair few short distance flights sat in the cabin just no long haul. Need a nice holiday soon though so no doubt that will change. I'm used to travelling though - used to spend 8 or more hours a day in a van and I don't really get bored, thank god :)
Classic Rock 11-03-2004, 14:44 I'm not going BA, some sort of Thailand plane I think, so doubt if the booze will be free. Usually expensive on flights like that.
If they have the in flight movie, I could watch that but you always get interrupted on them.
I'm excited on flights but after the first hour boredom sets in, especially when it goes dark outside and I'm flying through the night. Yawn. Can't sleep - seven hour time delay - need to be doing something.
Magazines are a possible. I've always found fiddling with my camera to be astonishingly interesting on a plane, but there's only so many minutes of fun that can take up.
starchild 11-03-2004, 14:45 Being an avid traveller
I can highly recommend American Airlines, which I use everytime I go to New York- including last week.
And the 777s are llllllllluuuuuuuuurrrrvvveeellllyyy.
The movies are good too, always fresh as it's an american airline so the movies have usually only just come out here in the UK.
Where are you flying to CR? Who is looking after the pub? :D
whenever u get bored just remind yrself that thailand is awaiting u! it should be amazing.
im off to oz in may with my babby and hubby in tow and thats 25 hours with a 6 month old baby
audio books is definetly top tip, buy loadsa really naff mags that u would never normally buy for a laugh and to fight of dvt i recomend star jumps in the aisles round the back of the plane where hopefully u'll be a bit private-works for me!
does anyone have tips for a 25 hour flight with a baby?

Flying to Thailand. Sass and the rest of the team are holding the fort. Yep, I'm leaving the bloke at home and heading off with one of the girlies.
neeeeeeeeeek 11-03-2004, 15:06 Vodka and Valium.
after food and the film neck 10mg of valium and drink some duty free Vodka, before you know it you will feel very heavy, next thing you will have people shaking you, trying to wake you up as you will have arrived! It's great

But I don't want to arrive feeling jaded and hungover. Sorry to be boring.
Sam Miguel 11-03-2004, 15:46 We usually go to Spain by coach - it takes twenty-four hours, and I don't get bored, so eleven hours on a plane would be OK for me.
I would tend to have few drinks and just let things happen around me.
You're on holiday! Enjoy it!
neeeeeeeeeek 11-03-2004, 15:50 then Valuim for the flight and a box of pro pluss and something fizzy when you land!  :wow:
Classic Rock 11-03-2004, 15:50 But with a coach you can look out of the window. It's all a bit samey on a plane. Clouds or hills to look on. The novelty of the stewardess walking past or the odd bloke on the way to the loo may break up the monotony. I do get very bored in these circumstances.
Sam Miguel 11-03-2004, 15:53 I reckon it'll pass much quicker than you think. It'll certainly be worth it at the end of it.
*Twinkle* 11-03-2004, 16:02 I've been to Florida twice, so I'm no stranger to long flights lol... I usually take along with me an assortment of magazines and once I've read them, I play with my little sister's inflight entertainment pack which usually keeps me amused for about 30 mins or so... Then she constantly wants to get up for the loo and won't go alone so I walk her there... Then she usually gets introuble for being naughty, so I try to entertain her... Then there's the rest of the passengers you have to nosy at... Who's doing what? Are we the only family who are taking part in musical chairs... What are they eating in premium class? Oh the list is endless... But if you're not nosy like me then you may get bored after the first hour or so... lol
But anyways, hope you enjoy your trip!
:D
Before the September 11th hijackings, I used to always take my tweezers and a small mirror so that I could pluck my eyebrows during the flight. The lighting on planes is so harsh, it shows up all those tiny, light coloured hairs you didn't even know you had! To do it properly used to kill a good half hour, but tweezers now have to be packed in your suitcase so I've not been able to do it for ages.

Does this mean you now have Dennis Healey Style eyebrows? :)

Not at all - my eyebrows are lovely due to lots of plucking!

It's not all that bad - when I flew to Thailand we flew over India with clear skies - it was great to see that massive country laid out beneath you. Then later, the sun was rising over the Himalayas on the horizon - stunning. And the scenery coming down over Myanmar into Thailand was great too....just make sure you get a window seat :)
tinajones 12-03-2004, 04:56 I recently endured a 10 hour flight to Mexico, my advice is..
* flight socks
* a bottle of red wine, but don't let the cabin crew see you!
* a big bottle of water
* a good book
* a book on the place you are going so you can plan your trip
* a travel pillow so you can have a kip
* some throat sweets as the air gets very dry
* headphones so you can make use of the inflight movies. We got quite new films like Master and Commander and School of Rock!
a good set of winning cards will do me fine anyday!!
it'll be quite interesting if it is an overnight one! especially if it is a clear night! ive always wanted to go on a night flight! you can sit and watch all the lights below you!
i went a flight to turkey (4 hours) and didnt get bored at all!! i was so excited!
try getting friendly with the person next to you. that will help! if its a Lady it will be GR8!
have fun!!!
Agent Orange 12-03-2004, 08:06 Pity you aren't flying with Virgin as they have SNES games to keep you occupied during the flight. I've got an 11 hour flight next month as I'm going to Antigua so I'll be on those SNES games lots.
I've just got back from 3 weeks in Thailand. It's really hot at the moment - around 40 degrees centrigrade down south in Krabi, 35-38 in Bangkok, it didn't rain at all. We flew with Thai airlines, the booze is free, had a couple of nice large Remy Martins myself. There's also plenty of legroom on Thai, more than any other airline I've flown longhaul economy with (BA, Virgin, American Airlines & Singapore). The only downer is the lack of seatback screens. Staff were fantastic, as a lady you'll get an orchid on arrival. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. Where abouts in Thailand are you going? We did Bangkok, Chang Mai and Krabi - wonderful.

How much did it cost you?
Well, quite a lot. But then it was a special treat and we stayed at top end 5*+ places, Shangri-La in Bangkok, Rayavadee in Krabi etc. Once in a lifetime experience and more than well worth it.
karandak 12-03-2004, 18:48 Ive been to America more times than i can remember, so had plenty of long flights to endure....
I usually find that my music, magazines, the in flight films, sleep and a good book pass the hours!! Especially the book, if its a good one you cant put down, the time will fly!! ooh and i agree, with Caprice, a bit of noseying passes the time too! hehe
When i went on the shorter flights to Majorca/Tenerife/Fuerteventura they were heaven, went soooo fast it was great!! Hardly had any time to do anything!

not a good idea about the bomb joke, tried it lol, the stewardess wsnt too hapy, i do the whole "hey that didnt hapen last time i was flying, is it supposed to make that noise?" when the planes wheels go down to scare all the ones with phobias, works too. also plyed "spot the shoe bomber" a couple times

I did also went for 3 weeks and did Bangkok, Chang Mai and the islands Koi Samui, Pang Yang and Tau. (not spelt correctly)
My flight there was about 300 quids and internal on thai airways were about 20 or 30 quids for each leg. immaculate airline. I spent another 100 to 200 on accommodation, travel, food, excursions etc. Spent some days living it up and others roughing it.

Enjoy prison food, do you? :)
Phanerothyme 14-03-2004, 03:06 i was gonna say...
its obvious but...don't make any bomb jokes no matter how funny.
starchild 14-03-2004, 11:24 So true
How funny are the bomb jokes when they come from a third party?
Maybe they make you laugh but I can assure you,
they're not remotely funny. Airline staff take comments like that very seriously and you could totally disrupt a take off and/or landing saying things like that.

I'm flying with Eva Air, no idea what they are like.
The costs of the holiday are all in that link too.

Because when people come on this board they seem to adopt a holier than thou attitude - everyone's an angel don't you know :loopy:

I suppose it all depends on what you find funny at the end of the day. I personally wouldn't find someone making a 'joke' about having a bomb in their luggage funny.
Especially in the present climate.
I suppose it all depends on maturity, if you're not mature enough to see that making those types of 'jokes' are not funny... then maybe some people need to grow up.
I don't think it has anything to do with a 'holier than thou' attitude, but more of a common sense one!:loopy:
My apologies to whoever it was that took my advice literally and proceeded to wile away the hours on a long flight by smoking in the toilets, telling bomb jokes, getting drunk and being abusive.
Please PM me when you get out of prison and I'll buy you a pint to make up for your troubles. What's more, I'll even let you enroll on my "****-take recognition" course for free to prevent you making similar mistakes in the future.
Anyone else struggling to distinguish between a ****-take and serious bit of advice may also like to consider signing up for this course. It's a full day and can be held in the pub of your choice at a cost of only £150 plus VAT. Please contact me for group booking discounts.
garrence 16-03-2004, 17:04 You could stand in the middle of the plane then shout "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
and see how many people join in.
went to Australia and nothing could have prepared me for the monotony of that trip. 24 hours on a cramped up jumbo jet (might be wide-bodied but they just cram more seats in). coming home is a complete nightmare as you don't even have the excitement of Oz to look forward to. Fell asleep coming home, thought it was for about 4 hours and turned out to be twenty minutes. Only 23hrs 40mins to go!
Can recommend Quantas (not sure if this is the correct spelling but, unfortunately, as has been pointed out by the headmasters on the forum, I didn't go to Charterhouse). we flew out with them and they are brilliant. free drinks all the time and nice friendly service. came back with BA and they were crap. if I ever brave the trip again (have to save the cash first) I will try to fly Quantas both ways.
challange yourself and see how much of the language you can learn before you get there.
Have a fab time, what ever you do!

The trouble with jokes is they have to be even slightly amusing to work. You should try it some time :)

For your info, I am proficient in most forms of comedy. Please let me know your preferred area (Ken Dodd perhaps?!?) and I'll see if I can tickle your fancy! :D
Back to the original question. I would recommend playing cards (for money of course). I have personally played cards for three days none stop without getting bored!

tried to do just that flying to Australia, but couldn't quite get to grips with all that g'day, strewth, sh'es the sorta sheila fo' me, stuff. would not recommend Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson's quick guide to Oz tapes.
Classic Rock 18-03-2004, 09:35 Not sure about having a desire to speak Thai. Is it Thai they speak there? Mime and facial expressions are often enough when haggling in a market!
