Specials at Herringthorpe in Toytown in about 1980? Great day out long walk back to Sheffield after clashes with fascists and the police.

I've still got the scar on the hand where I caught a blade.

Nothing has come close to the sheer exuberance and all round good feeling generated by the crowd and the band at that one gig.

Definitely Pulp, on various occasions (V97 (or 98), Finsbury Park, Sherwood Forest, Brixton Academy) 'cos Jarvis is just barking! Closely followed by Placebo'cos it's good to shake your head sometimes.

I must be so old ...

...my favourite gig was The Who at Newcastle City Hall in about 1981

Some of you werent even born then....sigh

It was wonderful though, a great light show to accompany great music and my hero Pete Townshend with the windmill arm guitar playing

Bliss.

Aswad at Sheffield Top Rank in about 1984 - well before they went all poppy. They were still playing righteous roots reggae with a live dub feel.

I was just 17, and watched wide-eyed as this Rasta bloke built the most enormous spliff I've ever seen (apart from the one in Withnail & I!)

Aswad's 1983 live album 'Live And Direct' gives a pretty fine feeling of what that gig was like. Amazing.

Good idea, thanks. I've now merged them and adopted the topic title "What's the best gig/concert you've ever been to?" so it's no longer restricted to just gigs in Sheffield.

Ah, 20/2/2000 was before I moved to Sheffield... How d'ya get the bootlegs?

Didn't you think the Arena was pretty empty in January? It seemed to only be half of the Arena so I was thinking it might have been better for them to have played city hall instead? Or is half the Arena's capacity bigger than a full city hall?! I haven't been to the city hall so I don't know how big it is.

I trade CC bootlegs. Lots of traders will burn you the boots for nothing as long as you pay postage/packing and send them cd's. Yes, it was disappointing to see it that empty. I went to the MEN arena show and that was full. That arena is much bigger than Sheffield. I went in 2000 to City Hall and it was a great atmosphere as most of the time small halls are. I wasn't disappointed because they put on a great performance in January but it must be hard when the arena is only half full. I not sure aobut the half arena size to city hall but I would imagine that CC thought they may sell more than they did and once the arena is booked obviously cannot switch, so the only other alternative is cancellation.

The Levellers, a few years back. I've never danced and sang so hard and so loud in my life. It was WILD:D :D
I also went with a load of people who were bigger than me, and they made a circle around me so I wouldn't get squashed by the crowd. I had no idea, I was bouncing around so much and then after they all had a story to tell about people crashing into them, while I was bruise-free. That's a night I'd relive in an instant.

it's not always the music but the way they go about their work.

bluesman Lowell Fulson turned up to do a Sunday afternoon matinee at the Leadmill sometime in the mid 80s. Performed a brilliant set with a pick up band and then afterwards, we spotted him just place his guitar on the back seat of an empty car, get in on the driver's side, and head up to Newcastle where he had a better paying gig that night with a bigger band and a brass section. Fulson was about 65 years old at the time.

I was glad to catch harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite down the Queens Rd Working Man's Club around 1991 too.

I've been to some memorable gigs, but I'm not a fan of large gigs.

My favourite:

Oasis- Maine Road
Pantera - Apollo
Desmond Decker- Leadmill
Skin - Leadmill

The Skin one was great, it was a Sunday night and not many people were there but she still gave it her all and got down from the stage and sang amongst the crowd :)

I saw Prince live, in the 90s, and the experience really put me off him. His ego certainly makes up for his small stature, he came on late and did a very short set (no pun intended) which was definitely not worth the astronomical cost of the ticket.:(

Many years ago I worked as a Steward so I've seen many a gig.

Those that stand out for good reasons are:

Stranglers (classic songs)
Pogues (full bottle of whisky reduced to nothing)
Anthrax (absolute nutters that watched them)
Tom Jones (real showman)

The worst one by a mile was Daniel O'Donnell, we had more aggro at that than any other concert I can recall.

Wish I could say I have been to loads but I haven't:

Of the two that I have been to (both as a teenager) was the Free Trade Hall in Manchester (and no I am not a Mancunian - I always consider myself a proud descendent of traitor county - Cheshire - even to this day the Cheshire regiment does not have Royal in front of it!). My brother-in-law had to go to Keele University so I got to see Yes in concert for free.
The other was Uriah Heep - with my sister and brother-in-law - one of the tracks I liked of theirs at the time was 'Wizard of a thousand kings' but we all had to walk out after 15 minutes to face deafening silence - very disappointing - the sound was penetrating my guts as well - not good after having eaten a medium rare steak with too many greens! You get the picture! So Yes has to be the outright winner for me - I was thirteen at the time.
