Just watching Richard Hammond's 5 o'clock show on ITV.

A bloke on there has just managed to get straight through to BT without having to go through the long process of pressing button 1.....5.......3.........4 or whatever and then being on hold for an hour.

The secret? As soon as the voice starts, press *. Press * again as soon as voice says 'press', and again whenever it speaks, and again. The computer gets confused and the dialling tone comes on and you're through to a human. It took 15 seconds.

Thought I'd share it with you.

For Tesco, just ignore all requests to press buttons as though you have the old style disc dialler and the computer puts you straight through.

For Alliance and Leicester, just press 0#0#0#...... ignoring the voice................. until they answer.

This is useful. Its a pity each organisation has a different code. Any more codes to add?

No more at this time, but I think Richard Hammond may be featuring other cheats over the rest of this week.

Anyone reading this may care to tune in 5pm ITV. Only problem is that you'll have to sit through the rest of this unbelievably dire excuse for a show.

As I work where I need to contact banks, building societies etc on a regular basis I tend when going through to a contact centre to bash the hash key several times and most of the time I manage to get through very quickly to different companies.

So if you don't have a code just give that a go, works for me!! :D

i've been doing this for years - just keep hitting random numbers until it gives up and routes me to a human. good to see there's some specific 'cheats', but as someone who used to do a bit of call system configuring, i reckon they'll be blocked off pretty quick.
one tip i found is to always go for the options where they want to take money off you/sell you something, those options always seem to get answered quicker than the complaint numbers.
