Whenever you are ill family and friends say 'Oh, get some soup down you, will perk you up'

I'm ill, the last thing I want to do is have a bowl of soup.

Please for the love of god, can someone please explain the logic because it has me totally stumped

I like soup and somehow it always seems to make me feel better when ill.

It's good for you, packed full of vitamins and stuff :)

It's reckoned that chicken soup ( much used in Jewish circles as a cure-all) has chemically proveable antibiotic properties.........

A decent bowl of soup will be full of everything you need - carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and probably some anti-oxidants as well (i may be wrong but it certainly makes sense).

When you're ill your body needs energy to make itself better so a light diet - consisting of things like soup - means that your body is using less energy to digest food and has more to help combat the infection (or whatever it is that is wrong with you).

If you have a sore throat it's like having a warm drink which is good for your throat and helps to relieve the symptoms (if not actually cure them).

On top of that, of course, there is the psychological effects - soup is meant to make you feel better so you start to feel better when you eat (drink?) it.

That's my opinion anywho :)

I hate it when you say you want to be sick and people turn round and start talking about greasy food or carrots!!!

I've heard chicken soup referred to as "jewish penicillin".

When we've had chicken for sunday dinner I often make some soup with the carcass and leftover meat then freeze it. I find it a real pick me up when I feel under the weather.
