Been to Wasabisabi on London Road quite a few times and would like to have a crack at making some of my own Japanese food!

Does anyone know where I could buy all the necessary ingredients to make sushi and other Japanese food?

try the continental supermarkets down london road etc.

also you could try the chinese supermarket on matilda street by the moor- they sometimes have japanese foods. although last time i was there, i was more intrigued by the chickens feet in the freezer- definately a bit different!

Can you find me a recipe for bukkake :)

Before the smut merchants arrive, this refers to a method of preparing noodles.

you can get sushi rice and wasabi paste from most oriental style shops. SO just informed me that Tescos (at least in glossop) sell the ingredients.

Its bloody impossible to make your own sushi - I have tried it, the sushi chefs in Japan train for years and years, and you need access to the best fresh fish. they sell it ready made in M&S and its almost as good as Wasabisabi. You can buy the ginger, rice, vinegar and wasabi sauce in Tesco. You'll struggle to find the right kind of fish though, I am informed that there is a Sushi bar in leeds of the kind you see in Japan where the food goes by on a conveyor, that should be fun, or visit Riga, the place is full of Sushi restaurants...:D

I thought M&S sushi didn't contain raw fish ?

If you can't find the right fish (which I think will be fairly easy) you could always make vegetable sushi.

It's not that difficult to make your own sushi. You don't need to use raw fish (sashimi) if you don't want to.

Smoked salmon and raw tuna steak goes down well but other ingredients you can use include peppers, egg, cucumber, avocado, sesame seeds, crabsticks.

Using a rolling mat helps.

the rolling mat is vital (or so my SO says). But we used the ingredients similar to m&s, smoked salom, soft cheese, peppers, tuna etc...

I'd recommend Rick Stein's seafood cookery book. I've not tried the Sushi recipes in there, but the book contains detailed instructions on how to prepare fish. I imagine the sushi recipes will be just as helpful. It's on special offer on Amazon at the mo: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0563534176/203-3046512-3863125

That book is fabulous! If you like fish, buy it, you can't go wrong.

You can get everything for Sushi in Tesco Abbeydale Rd. yes, you will find it difficult to get some of the more unusual fish, but you can use prawns, smoked salmon, raw tuna, crab, all of which you can also get at tesco fish counter - and the fishmonger will probably be happy to help out with other fishy requirements...

It won't be as good as what you would have if it was made by a trained chef, obviously, but it will be considerably cheaper, which makes up for the slight mess you might make of it.

hmmm, stewed chicken feet- dunno if i fancy that.

i had chicken feet (courtesy of our very kind cabin mates) when i went on a 3 day trip down the yangtze river. but the ones i had were fried (i think!), but like you say, theres really not that much on them- very definately just skin and bones.

as for cooking them myself- i dont think so. my housemates a veggie and she'd do her nut if she opened the freezer to find a bag of feet waving back at her! lol

I'm going to have a go at making sushi - I got a bargain "how to make sushi" book and I've watched some little videos of a proper japanese chef making sushi on the internet.. just got to get the ingredients - I think the online store is going to be cheaper than tesco or sainsburys (both do the bits you need).

I'm not bothered about the raw fish - more into the smoked salmon or tuna+cucumber type sushi.. just want to avoid paying £3 a day for my sushi habit!
