View Full Version : Car Nightmares In Town

This driver stopped to ask for directions on Shoreham St the other day...outside Red Tape studios. He wanted to get to the Town Hall....not a car park nearby but the Town Hall itself. Even though I drive around town I was a bt stumped to give directions. Easy to get there on foot...but a mindbender to give directions to the average driver. Anyone else got examples of journeys in the city that are an easy walk ....but ridiculous in the car?

What about Cole brothers car park, always a nightmare to get to by car!

Exactly why I now go into either Rotherham or Parkgate Retail Park now instead of town.

Instead of discouraging cars and trying to get people onto buses, all they seem to have done is send people elsewhere:loopy:

Not that difficult, really.

Red Tape Studios
> Carry on to Park Square Roundabout
> Left onto Commercial Street
> Bear round to the left onto Arundel Gate
> Right onto Norfolk Street before the Crucible
> Town Hall!

The joys of Sat-Nav!

But the City Centre can be really awkward to get around if you dont drive down there regularly!

Know what you mean. Someone asked me for directions from City Hall (Lloyds side) to Novotel recently. Easy enough until I started trying to think where a car could go. Round the one way system near Coles, out by the fire station, Charter Sq., daft one way bit on Furnival Gate, rest of one way system near Coles just to get back on Furnival Gate, then Arundel Gate. Don't envy anyone who didn't know the city trying to negotiate all that by car.

Oh yes....until your TOM TOM decides to insist that you turn the wrong way up a one way street, and after that fails to provide ANY alternative route (for nearly one mile) except do a U turn and turn into same one way street......but that was Leeds, and that is entitled to be a nightmare.

Or your tom tom gets stroppy and refuses to work until you go the way IT wants to go.

When we used to have a warehouse on Broad Lane (down from the old Jessop Hospital toward West Bar) a car pulled up asking for directions to the Crucible Theatre.

Hum. I had to think quite hard. On foot, it's a five minute walk, in the car however, it's quite a challenge.

They were facing up hill so I gave them this route:

Go to University roundabout;
Turn left down Upper Hanover Street onto Hanover Way;
Continue along to St. Marys and turn left onto Arundel Gate.

It is easier to say this now, but try telling a car load of people who don't know the city and they think you're leading them on.

A two mile detour to travel, in effect, less than a quarter of a mile.

And just imagine what will have happened if they missed their turn-off!!!

It may be best just to stick to saying: "I wouldn't start from here, mate". :hihi:

This is exactly what's happening in Nottingham with car parks closing left, right and centre

From the side of Coles (John Lewis) with the ugly red thing that used to be a cinema on my right, a one way street with City Hall ahead - and trying to drive to Howden House public entrance. Its almost a stone's throw - but difficult to drive, especially if you don't know the place.

Nuf-said.

You mean the traffic planning dept. is run by students ??

Presumably putting chaos theory into real-life situations :)

Agreed, but can you really turn right off Arundel Gate into Norfolk Street?

Yeah I was wondering about this. Sounds suspiciously straight forward!!

Never mind getting to it by car, have you ever tried jumping off it?

Killer! :gag:

Here's a conundrum. You are are on Barkers Pool. Outside Fountain Precinct looking towards the Town Hall on your right. Only a few hundred yards away. But just how do you get to the town hall by car ....given you're being forced to turn left down Pinstone St...away from yer destination.

All this complaining from people in Sheffield where most people walk all the long way round to their back doors, instead of going the direct route in througfh the front!!!:D

Seriously though:

Last time I looked there is a filter and traffic light to turn right off Arundel Gate onto Norfolk Street.

Did anyone else hear BBC Sheffield this morning? Antonia's researchers must spend all day on here. She had an outside broadcast on how to drive from Carver Street to the Town Hall to deliver (not park)!
They used a Mercury taxi with SatNav!!!

Here's another long winded one.
Virgin Megastore front door to the Virgin Megastore side (delivery door) door.
One mile according to the mileometer on the dashboard.

Even if you drive through town regular with the amount of building work (especialy towards the back end of last year) one day you could use a road the next day without warning it was shut!
a nightmare...no wonder people go to meadowhall and rotherham

Looks like Sheffield is just like any other large city in the 21st Century.

Ever got stuck on the one way system in Leeds, Manchester etc etc.

Why do people appear to think only Sheffield is like this??

I recently got stopped by a van driver near Waitrose, who was seeking directions to Matilda Street. I realised it was no use sending him back down the ring road, as he would not then have a permitted left turn into Matilda Street off Shoreham Street. As my complicated directions became increasingly less helpful, I finally got in his van, and drove with him to his destination. Far simpler solution! :hihi:

Note: Longcol has a valid point. If you think Sheffield may be difficult to navigate...... you haven't been to Derby!:gag:

Being a tad too old for complicated gadgets like satnav I got me a new AA road atlas.

If you look at the city centre maps in the back you'll find that all cities (with the exception of Milton Keynes) and decent size towns have fiendishly complicated one - way systems.

If I'm going somewhere new for work I always ask company I'm going to for directions (map via e-mail annotated with local landmarks eg pubs, garages, parking) and anybody coming to where I work I always send as a matter of courtesy. Works like a treat.

The days when you could expect to drive straight through the middle of anywhere with a population of over 50,000 without encountering one ways etc went out about the same time as the Vauxhall Viva / Ford Cortina / Austin Allegro.
