Hi,

Our boiler keeps stopping working. It kicks in and heats the house for a bit, but then it stops working (still sounds like it is) and the flame light lights up.

I have been told the name of the new part it will probably need (forget what it is now) but that I will need someone to fit it.

Before I call British Gas, does anyone know anyone worth calling?

Would like decent workmanship and decent price if it's possible :D

Sounds like the thermocouple is knackered. I had one fitted a few years ago, bought the part from Petre street and called a plumber to fit, charged me £75 (3 yrs ago)

Got a combi now, a lot better

It is a combi boiler that we have, but the part was called a thermacouple! Thanks for reminding me.

I called a friend about it last night and that's what he advised, although he did this over the phone so it could be wrong.

Anyway, I need the boiler sorting, it gets cold when the heating goes off :(

I could confidently recommend the chap who recently installed our new combi-boiler. PM me via this thread if you would like his name and number (runs his own business, did a great job for us)

Hope you sort something out soon - it's cold out there.

Thanks, I'll call the people mentioned and see who comes up cheapest.

It's not too cold to be honest, every time the radiators get cold I restart the heating and I have also purchased a load of coal and chopped some logs for the fire in the front room which is nice and toasty :D

http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82160 No, that doesn't appear to be me.

That description sounds nothing like me, plus none of my neighbours complain considering most do the same.

And what kind of idiot uses a log fire in the summer??

Weird, I was about to reply to that thread and it's now dissapeared. Has the original poster requested it's deletion from the site?

To answer his question, it's an offence under the Clean Air Act 1993, but not all areas of Sheffield are smoke free. In some out areas you may still burn coal or wood, unless there's been a change recently to include these areas.

*edit* found his post merged *edit*

A PCB is the printed circuit board that controls the boiler. These can be almost as much as a new boiler as the manufacturers really know how to charge for them.
TMS might be able to sort you out with one. If it's an old boiler though it might be difficult to get one.

Be very wary. It is an easy answer to say 'its the Printed Circuit Board' You need someone who knows how to diagnose faults.
Installation guys are not usually any good at this. You need a good service engineer.

We've had the very latest East European Boiler Co (http://sophie-g.net/photo/build/ducey/pct/chaudiere.jpg) technology fitted.

The people who had that probably said 'my boilers not working, can you come and give it a service' :(

Marky543 - apparently the boiler is only 3 years old, 4 at the most

One of the reasons a pcb can blow is water leaking on to it. If you fork out for anew pcb without fixing the fault it will happen again.
You need a service engineer to check it out who knows what he is doing

Good advice from Artisan here. It'd be a real shame to have the pcb replaced and find that the problem lies with something else.
It's worth getting a service engineer to diagnose it properly.

My Boiler went last Feb and numerous plumbers ummed and ahhed and it was looking like a new boiler was going to have to be bought until John Booth of A1 Gas came and had a look.
He explained it was the PCB that had gone (when one of the others had said it was the pump because the boiler was old and other mis-diagnoses) and without that nothing else would work. He was a cracking bloke, did a sound job and think the whole job cost me £180 in the end. The other plumbers I'd called out seemed to me were just looking for the relatively easy job of putting in a new boiler where there can make a tidy sum on the purchase of the boiler itself rather than sorting out what was a straight foward but tricky problem.
A1 are in the yelow pages or what have you and I'd recommend them to anyone

I think that A1 Gas are an agency (If its the same one I am thinking about) who have various contractors in different areas, sounds like you struck lucky:)
