View Full Version : Water Rates
firsteuro 10-03-2004, 11:53 I HAVE JUST HAD MY WATER RATES BILL AND THOUGHT IT SEEMS QUITE HIGH AT £281.67
I AM THE SOLE OCCUPIER OF A 3 BED SEMI IN CROSSPOOL SHEFFIELD.
DOES THIS AMOUNT SEEM CORRECT?
Skatiechik 10-03-2004, 12:16 I always thought water rates were standard regardless of how many people lived in the property. That is unless you waterbill is metered.
Get yourself a water meter installed. If you have low to average use you'll save a fortune.
Classic Rock 10-03-2004, 12:25 Try running a business. I have to pay £164 per month!!!
firsteuro 10-03-2004, 12:35 I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A METER INSTALLED, BUT YORKSHIRE WATER STATE THAT THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REPLACE THE BLOCK PAVING ON MY DRIVEWAY TO THE STANDARD THAT THEY FOUND IT.
Skatiechik 10-03-2004, 12:39 Can you not shout please, we aren't deaf :)

Ask them if you can have one fitted on your outside wall. My meter is a small circular gadget on my outer wall. I am Severn Trent but I'm sure YW will do them.

Depends where the pipe runs.
little malc 10-03-2004, 13:58 When I moved to Scarborough, I found we were fitted with a meter, I was worried at first, and used water sparingly, but have found after being here a year, that the bills are less than a quarter what my rates in Sheffield were. The supplier here is also Yorkshire Water, the meter is actually installed in the pavement at the entrance to my property. There are only two of us, but the savings are well worth having, I would recomend a meter to anyone who does not have children at home.
We moved from a house that had a fixed bill to a house on a meter and we're dreading the bill! Considering the fact that we're a 4 person family that uses alot of water! I have a shower in a morning and a bath at night, my brother has a bath at night and so does my mum. My dad has a shower in the morning.
That's 2 x 10 minutes showers and 3 x full baths a day!
Plus all the other usage.. I reckon it will be nearly twice as much as it was at the old house :(
fnkysknky 10-03-2004, 14:11 From people I know that have them it seems that usually 1 persons usage costs approx. £4-£5 a month. They're pretty clean people too so I guess that they shower, bath and wash their clothes regularly ;)

Don't be, I think you'll have a pleasant surprise(famous last words).
We are a 4 person family, all take daily baths and the washing machine goes a dozen times a week.
Like you I dreaded the first bill coming in but only pay half of what we did on water rates.

Cheap at twice the price.
How much would you charge just to empty someone's toilet ?

shouting aside ;D
that's only about 77 pence a day
or 2/3 (or so) of a 500ml bottle of diet coke (depending on where you purcase it, at anything from 77p to £1.29)
Or about 1 quality newspaper
or half-to 3/4 of a cup of tea or coffee from somewhere in teh city centre
So, for fresh, clean safe water, and the sanitation factor of the sewerage that YW/ST take away and cleanse...
No, I don't think that is at all bad, actually, as water rates go.
Your water rate is based on the rateable value of the property. not your actual consumption.
I live in a newer, housing association property, which do not have a rateable value (having been built since the domestic rates were abolished), so we are forced to have water meters installed.
it comes to something when we have to think about whether to flush the loo, or put the washing machine on, worrying about how much it will cost.
I pay about six and a half quid per week, for my water usage, and that's for a two person household.

Flutterbyes 11-03-2004, 22:14 i asked yw about a meter in my ncha property and they wanted £500 for the privlegde....
so what i would be saving in water costs i would be forking out for a meter. its only £20 a month same as any other utility really...
fredsredhat 18-03-2004, 20:56 ours has just come in at £12 a month. quite reasonable i thought. waht does get to me is the council tax £80 odd a month!!! for what? i'm in a privatly owned house, i know it pays for lighting police etc but what if you could opt out of the police, fire protection? my national insurance should pay for my nhs useage, my road tax should pay for the road maintainence, my income tax should pay for the blundering fools that call themselves government. it's about time we stood up to it. if only i knew how.....

DOES THIS AMOUNT SEEM CORRECT? My bill is quarterly - about £50, metered, bigger house, 2 occupants. If yours is annual a saving of £80 a year if the meter costs £500 doesn't look attractive. If your bill is quarterly, change as soon as you can, even if you have to pay someone more to sort the paving properly! (But check, they may be able to put the meter somewhere else). Metering is environmentally beneficial as most people cut consumption once metered - just things like not leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth make a difference.

Either YW policy has changed or you have some technical problems with fitting one as my mum had one fitted free by YW.
theflyingfish 01-07-2004, 11:41 Yorkshire water want £100 out of me for the first quarter - £400 a year seems like an incredible amount of money for water . By comparison my electricity bill for the year is about £300!
There's two adults in the household, mostly we shower rather than bath and we run a washing machine and dishwasher every couple of days, but £400 a year seems a bit steep, doesn't it?
I can't see how I pay more for water than electricity!
ours is around that too FF. so they haven't singled you out, they **** on us all and who said that it would save us all money when they did away with nationalised industries.....eeerrrmmmmm let me think, could it have been that well known milk snatcher Margaret Hilda Thatcher and her merry men, at least Blair smiles while he ****s on us.
Water bill for a three bed semi in Wadsley Bridge is £360.
Similar threads merged.
Get a water meter if possible. Our bill went down from £500 to £190 pa.
eviljock 01-07-2004, 12:52 Before we moved last August, we paid water rates (i.e. non-metered) of around £400 per annum based on "rateable value" of house. We then moved into a flat which had a water meter. Yorkshire Water recommended a monthly payment based on the previous owner's usage. So now we pay £24 per month (£288 per annum). We haven't had a bill yet based on an actual reading, the meter man was here last week. But as others have said, a meter makes you think twice about running a tap or flushing the loo. We both have a shower every morning plus washing machine and dishwasher. Plus the odd bucket to water the flowers when it has been dry for a few days (not that often then).
ToryCynic 01-07-2004, 13:02 Ours is around £25 pcm. (Thames Water) 3 people with regular showers/baths.
Council Tax £110 pcm (London Borough of Bexley)
In the house in Gravesend it was £20 pcm (Southern Water) 3 people.
Council Tax £80 (Dartford Borough Council)
Alex
Not that its much help but, we pay about £70 per quarter between 2 peeps. Which i thought was quite a lot.
allpieismine 07-07-2004, 10:42 Approximately how much are water rates going to cost per month for 2 people sharing a house in Sheffield? Anyone help?

Merged this question with an existing thread which should give you a good idea of what people are paying.
allpieismine 07-07-2004, 10:58 Thank you, Max.
We had a water meter fitted a couple of years ago and it's saved us a FORTUNE. Yorkshire Water fitted it for free in the kitchen. No probs.
40 quid a month rates to 14 quid on the meter.
It makes you think a little more too about how much water you actually use. You'd be amazed if you watch the meter. After all, isn't it crazy that we pay for clean drinking quality water and then flush it down the toilet !!
allpieismine 07-07-2004, 11:08 I agree, hippy, it's just crazy. I'll be renting and no doubt the landlords won't have had a meter fitted (they live in brighton and i think the house may be a bit "out of sight, out of mind!) so I'll have no choice but to pay the filthy council their blood money!!!
*end rant*

I used to live in Gravesend, but I'm originally from Bexeyheath / Crayford, so I know those areas well. My parents and sisters still live in Crayford.
