the freerunning group in sheffield, SPK (Sheffield Parkour) are in need of a gym to train in on occasion, or even regularly if it goes well, we have been refused by Club Hallam, the uni are worried of the risk, and the insurance problems, but there are many groups that train in gyms around the country, for parkour and tricking, but we can't seem to find anywhere that will admit us. we have heard that steel city gym is a good option to try but i nhave heard from many people that it is closed down.

anyone know anywhere we could try?

anyone know whether steel city gym is actually still running, or has it already been shut down?

What about trying one of the circus groups Greentop over @Brightside and Flying teapot near the uni roundabout I know they have various bits and bobs to bounce off loads of crashmats and safty harnesses but i have no phone numbers for contacting them..

Its a shame im too messed up the with my anlkes Knees or i would love to give it a go again not done parkour for years it was before it was called parkour..

I'd no idea what you were on about, but after visiting your forums, the fog has cleared a little.
Tho i can't get the gallery to work on your main page - Plogger cannot connect to the database because: Access denied for user 'sheffiel'@'10-0-1-10.sagonet.tld' (using password: YES)

What stuff would you need to do in the gym? I'm guessing jumping off things rather than using them??

Virgin gym has a good climbing wall, and the Edge climbing centre - i guess it would be good for practising balance or grip

What do other parkour groups do for practise?

well we want to practice vaults over frames/horses, that sort of thing, and we would make use of the crashmats by safely attempting flips, we would use balance beams and pullup bars in accessable; we would generally recreate urban situations (like the places we train in town) and would attempt things we wouldn't normally try outsite, or try to improve the techniques etc. we could gain confidence from flips in the gym, and would be able to do them outside if we learn them inside first.

as for the gallery, i take it you meant SheffieldParkour.com, i will get on to shane about that problem.]

there is a great gym video made my Northern Parkour, called NPK1 which is the very first gym session they held, and it shows a great use of the facilities (MANY were available in this particular gym) and they all warmed up properly first and got some great stuff done. If anyone has seen Ch4's parkour program, Jump Britain, there is as a great gym session in that, shows what sort of thing we would use it for, and that it is not dangerous when you know your limits.

ok apparently shane told me that the gallery has been down a few months ago, i must have forgot.

i am in the process of organising a big beginners parkour jam, a session similar to the one held for our benefit just after Jump Britain was shown on TV, which consisted of a few experienced traceurs showing a lot of new people the ins-and-outs of the basics to help get us started off in the right direction. it was a great day out in sheffield and we learned so much from them and since there are a load of us still at it every week for a year id say they did a pretty good job.

this one, like last time, will be for anyone who wants to have a go, reguardless of age/sex/ability etc it doesn't matter how good you are or how much you know about the names of teh movements or whatever; this attitude applies to every single jam we hold on saturdays too. People often say "but how good do you have to be" or "i don't think i'll be good enough...i'd rather do it on my own" when they start getting interested in coming tehy put themselves off by worrying what people will think. it really doesn't matter, we will help you out with picking up the basics and you can learn from watching how we do things. i hope i can pull this big jam off and get lots of people involved. it will be awesome.
spread the word, tell everyone you know. the date is yet to be arranged but will be february sometime. i will post it as soon as i decide.
