Hi there I've just started on this site today..I'm looking to find out what happened to my old Shiregreen mates..Brian and Mick Mills, Terry Ashton, Allan Garlick, Hodgey the drummer, Roy Archer(Dan), Ken Irwin..we all went on holiday together to the Isle of Man in the late fifties..I was a bit of a pratt in those days I remember ...still am ! according to the wife.

If Mick Mills was the "ginger nut" who went to Shiregreen Sec Modern school, he was in my class, if the same person I would also love to hear any news.

Yep he's the one all spots and a red spikey haircut..last I heard he was a bus conductor....but they don't have have them now.

I went to Shiregreen sec mod as well but I was in the class one year in front of you What about that Head teacher Mr Lamb???The human rights people would have had him sorted if he was teaching today..I can still feel my hands stinging from the many canings I got from him..didn't do me any harm tho'

Good to know it's the same Mick I knew, we all left school in summer of 1958, I have been living in Scarborough for last two years, but just before we moved, I heard from a friend about some sort of reunion, and Mr Lamb, now in his 90's attended!
Don't know if the old boy is still going, but nice to think so.

Mick mills ..left school and started work at Newton Chambers Chapletown..He worked alongside me in the Machine shop on a horizontal borer until he was 21 at least..He married a well endowed girl from Parsons Cross her name was Gwen Muxlow daughter of Bill Muxlow (Known as Burglar Bill)..I last saw Mick and his wife ouside The La Plata club in Hillsborough back in 1970 he was dressed in bus conductors uniform at the time and I've not seen or heard from him since...but for the last 35 years i've lived in a pretty little village called Norton, near Stockton on Tees.

I think I remember seeing Mick on the buses, here are a few memorys for you: Miss Fincham, never did one so small frighten so many!: walking to Firth Park to get tram to Sutherland Rd swimming baths: putting your hand up to ask if you could have big roll of penny tickets: trying to fill a poor dovetail joint with thick smelly hot brown woodglue:sitting crosslegged on floor at assembly singing hymns: singing forty years on! god! its a bit more than that now is'nt it: sago pudding with a dollop of jam: freezing in winter in huts: Mr Page cracking you with a piece of wood for making the lousy joint! the memories go on.
I am sure now though, that retirement is definately the best shift.
There is a Norton near where I live, next to Malton, don't think i've been down your end.

Is this Jim or Barbara Smith, twins who lived on Ronksley Crescent although I thought they would be in the same class together.

Jim was a professional footballer and manager, now at Portsmouth.

While I was trying to locate some of my old school mates,I came across a site called "Friends Reunited" and on this site I found a reference to Shiregreen Sec Mod School on Bracken Rd...When I was there I remembered most of all Mr Lamb..I was scared to death of this bloke because if you disobayed him or didn't pay attention to him he went nuts and he became very violent, I was caned by Mr Lamb myself many times for things like, being late, talking in class, not paying attention ,daydreaming etc..On his first day at the school I saw him come into the classroom to supervise dinnertime( we had school dinners in the classroom in those days) We were all chatting and messing around waiting for our turn to go into the main hall and collect our meals...When in came Mr Lamb He shouted out to the class "SILENCE" we all went silent ( this bloke was different to the other teachers) a lad called Alan Jones had a deck of cards on his desk top..Mr Lamb said to him you put those cards away lad..Jones started to gather the cards together, but took his time doing it in Bravado because Jones was a big lad for fourteen. Anyway the next thing I saw was Mr Lamb diving across the desks at Jones..He grabbed him by the jacket and beat him across the face several times with his fists and hands..I didn't have much of an appetite that afternoon...I never forgot that day...now 50 years later...I found another Pupil at the same school who remembers a similar event a couple of years later after I'd left school and Mr Lamb had been Promoted to headmaster...and this is what he says...

Anyone remember when the head, Mr LAMB caned ROD BEST for talking while he was taking assembly ref [ myself DAVID LOCKWOOD and[ CHIMP] PHIL MASLIN for smoking in the yard. He broke the cane on the top of the stage as i recall ,and little ROD BEST had to go to hospital with his hand, Old LAMB gave him 20 strokes, you could hear a pin drop in the school hall, everyone was gob smacked. I ran my hand under the cold tap before i paid a visit to his study for my sins.NEVER FORGOT THAT.!
A few years after leaving good old Shiregreen Sec.i joined the army as a ROYAL MILITARY POLICEMAN, and i went back to see the HEAD and i reminded him of the incident, to which he replied. " NO PAIN " NO GAIN"
John barnett.

The Kids today don't know how lucky they are.

Re the friends united site, yes, I have seen the photo from 1953, no, honest, i'm not on this picture, I was in Miss Summerset's class in 1954, the year after, have still got a photo somewhere.
I left school in 1958, and was head boy that year, the closest i've ever come to fame! the last teacher I had was Mr May, great guy.

I visited Sheffield this last weekend, saw my mate Ian Bilson, he remembers both you and brother Eric, were you in B B at Hatfield Lane? Brian Woodriff who wrote the two books on Shiregreen lived just below you, I think it was last house going towards English Steel ground. By the way, he is in the process of completing a third book, should be interesting.

Ian at that time lived on Crowland Road, went to Hatfield House Lane chapel, his uncle, Donald Hazell played the organ there, Ian was also a football ref, he's still living in Lane Top area, I think he will be about one year younger than you. I'm trying to persuade him to register on forum, he would be an asset to it, as unlike me, he has a damn good memory!

I knew Bryan very well as he only lived next door but one ..He was a very well educated lad , During his National Service he was a Russian interpreter. Bryan was 3 years older than me and I used to play around with his younger brother Keith..He Keith unfortunately died a few months ago, but I was lucky enough to meet up with him again last year, and talk about the old days.

Could you tell me what number you lived at? if you remember? I was once told that Marti Caine lived on Shirehall rd, not sure if this was true or not. Cheers B54

Timbuck, I think the number of the house in Shirehall Rd. was 264, my parents said they moved into the new house with a minimum amount of furniture. When we arrived home after a weeks holiday in 1939 ther was the parts of an anderson air raid shelter in the front garden.

The webbs had a daughter , Babara , I think. We somehow inherited their dog, it was a black labrador called Judy. The Webbs house was a bit of a mess but a wonderland for small boys. Mr Webb used to tell us stories of his time in the Navy.
