View Full Version : Do you ever have mood swings from week to week?
Kthebean 06-01-2006, 16:05 Are you a fairly balanced person or do you have mood swings? I have been feeling like thunder for the past week and have been raging at one and all but all of a sudden today I feel much brighter and happier, like the clouds have shifted - and I have been suddenly helping people across the road and whistling cheerily!
Is this just self indulgent rubbish? What experience do the rest of you have of this odd phenomenon?
mistyraven 06-01-2006, 16:12 I do I am really down not sure if it is anything to do with xmas and new year.. I am a happy person most of the time but this week been grumpy
Kthebean 06-01-2006, 16:16 Yep I've been watching Gillian McKeith (she might seem like the anti-christ but she's probably right) - and have been thinking maybe my moods are to do with eating and drinking too much? A bit too much indulgence over the holiday period? I never used to be like this!

So last week, kathythebean was like thunder but now she helps folk cross the road, whereas mistraven was happy until this week, but is now grumpy. Hmmm....how did you two manage to swap moods this week? :suspect:
livestrong 06-01-2006, 20:53 i don't really think that i do, i guess i'm too laid back to really get too stressed about anything, lifes to short...
I'm generally fairly stable. But I have noticed recently that when hungover I start to get a little paranoid. I've taken to just sleeping it off since I know why i'm feeling that way anyway.
tslogf74 06-01-2006, 21:12 I've been a bit down this week due to returning to work after an excess of time off.
cloudybay 06-01-2006, 21:35 I think we all suffer mood swings Kathy. It's called life really, however, this time of year can be particularly bad. Hormones don't help, even worse if you are female. Oestrogen and Seratonin are the major culprits. I hate Oct to March. I have rather large downers. S.A.D they call it............Seasonal Affected Disorder...................lack of sunlight...........I could hibernate. Mood swings are normally a sign of depression. Try keeping a diary of how you feel every day and the circumstances that surround you at the time. And before you ask, depression can hit anyone at anytime for no reason. It's purely a chemical imbalance. 25% of the population suffer from it................another large percentage won't admit it. If you need help, just ask.
BrainThrust 06-01-2006, 21:58 Oh I'm glad someone else is like this!
I can pretty much determine what mood I'll be in depending on hos i was the week or 2 weeks previous.
I go through an endless stage of:
Week 1: Feeling happy, crazy and eemotionally wild, sometime so much I am hyper sensitive and upset easily
Week 2: Feeling normal, emotions I can deal with, I'm chatty, extroverted but not insecure
Week 3: Totaly down. If I socialise I'm not much company. Just leave me alone cos I'm just feeling crap, not socialising makes me feel worse but I fele uncomfortable when I'm trying to.
Week 4: Feeling normal again, introspective still but now I'm deeply creative, I can explain my ideas but am still living off in an internal fantasy land.
I think I'm on the cusp of week 2/3 now.
Wilf
SatanInHeels 06-01-2006, 22:22 not sure about week to week.. think my mood swings are on more of a daily or even hourly basis!
can be on top of the world and incredibly hyper one minute and then hit rock bottom and want to go and hide in a corner the next. very annoying at times to be honest.. and seems to be getting worse which isnt helpful! x
Yup I'm also known for mood swings. Ask my family or those close to me :) It can be week to week but it's usually day to day. Sometimes it's even hour to hour. I need help I think! :loopy:
I'm think that I'm fairly balanced, relaxed person all year round.
Possibly with a few exceptions....
I wouldnt say i have mood swings as such more of feeling low and a little depressed from time to time...
Although i have been suffering badly with PMT of late... i turn into a right animal... Grrr! Beware if anyone stands in my way... I'll ave ya...
My Family & those closest to me have several times been on the receiving end and its not nice... it makes me feel so guilty when i'm over it as i can see how evil i've been... its horrible... no one does anything wrong but i seem to make their lives a living hell...
Luckily it only lasts a day or so... i think i would learn to hate myself it were any longer... :?
I do have mood swings every now and then, which is an annoyance to everyone around me.
I'm trying to sort them out though- and I find a nice bar of chocolate and some JD & coke sorts me right out- also listening to a bit of Metallica S&M drags me out of a foul mood very quick as well.

What experience do the rest of you have of this odd phenomenon? Take a look into BioRhythms (http://www.bio-chart.com/), which can sometimes explain obscure moods or lack of/bursts of energy! :)
Well that's an interesting site. Emotionally I'm nearly -100 today so I think I'll go for a walk and chill out this afternoon. :P
koenigsinger 07-01-2006, 10:18 Had two bouts of depression a few years ago, treated and overcome, but every now and then I have a 'black dog' day, and no matter what I or anyone else tries to do, the mood wont shift, and I've found that the only way to deal with it is to just get myself away from everyone and just ride it out, no drinking, dont eat much, just go off into my own space for a while and chill. Generally the next day I wake up feeling extremely chipper.
most of the time though I am pretty upbeat and can laugh at the things that trouble me.
*Twinkle* 11-01-2006, 13:33 I've had some mood swings over the past couple of months, which I've put down to a lot of upheavel and change of circumstances. :(
When I'm settled, I'm normally a really happy, upbeat level-headed person... and am reknowned for being so... Everyone at work especially, comments on how I always have a smile on my face :) I just am generally quite happy, even though I'm not quite where I want to be in life, I still find myself smiling most of the time.
I do have one really awful mood-swing and that really does upset me when I get like that... I just snap out of normal-caprice-mode and suddenly I don't want to do anything, but I feel bored and snappy when people try and comfort me... I usually want to be left alone to perhaps think it out, or cry for a while and then I'm straight back on form. This mood swing tends to last an hour of two maximum, but its not nice and I hate to think that I've snapped at anyone and upset them. (Cos I certainly don't respond well to being on the receiving end of other's mood swings :( )
Recently someone has come into my life that I can't quite categorise. (That sounds awful, but he's not a friend, neither is he a potential BF) I don't know where to place him, and its been upsetting me to the extent whereby I'll lash out at him (unlike my usual placid nature), saying I never want to see him again, yet just minutes earlier, we'd been getting along fine. My mind's been in turmoil over this and it really is getting to me :( My mood changes from one minute to the next over him and he's definately picked up on it and I just feel so bad that I'm being so indecisive over it all, when usually I'm stable and will stand by my choices. Ohhhh :(
But apart from that, nah I'm not really moody at all... Generally happy, I feel no effects of PMS or anything, I'm just me most of the time!
Berberis 11-01-2006, 13:36 no, because I have an XY chromosome :D

Gillian McKeith? The 'Dr' who thinks that leafy veg oxygenate the blood because they contain lots of chlorophyll? I think you'll find that she is the anti-christ ;).

This is hilarious; and very interesting:
Ben Goldacre vs Gillian McKeith (http://www.guardian.co.uk/life/badscience/story/0,12980,1285600,00.html)
And there's plenty more where that came from:
Ben Goldacre's Blog (http://www.badscience.net/)
(There might be a problem at the minute with this site, but it's usually up and running).
sugarnspice 11-01-2006, 15:51 Oh I'm a totally crazy *****.
In my experience most women have mood swings from minute to minute not week to week :D
coral_amber 11-01-2006, 17:27 I lost my son 6 yrs ago to meningitis, and I have suffered with depression for many yrs before that. so I have been on anti-depressants for my mood swings.
