Hi, does anybody on here drive a classic car?by that i mean pre 1980,although technically pre 1989 is regarded as classic,
i own a triumph spitfire, not in great nick but its great fun.
just thought it may be an idea to swap tips and advice on traders,
or even classic events ect.

So my 1983 Vanden Plas Maestro isn't deemed a Classic in your eyes? :(

Used to own a 1979 Datsun 280C estate (aussie spec).

Rolled on cornering like a football. Drank like a fish (20mpg!!!)

Comfort beyond belief, and never broke down.

Insurance and mpg forced me to sell.

Very sad day.:(

1988 Toyota Celica 2.0 GT

She's a classic in mine eyes!

Remember watching them in the rallys when I was a nipper and now I got one.

(.....yesterday blew up the diff - and got a classic repair bill...thats always a good sign!):(

Until recently I had a 1985 (C reg) Escort RS Turbo Series 1.
Was quite please because I got classic car insurance which is considerably cheaper but your mileage is limited.

My other half has a Morris Oxford that he keeps off road at the moment. I think it's on a C plate. That IS a classic!

Not at the moment, but I'm about to purchase a VW Beetle. Totally love classic cars as they have far more character than any modern car even if they are a little more expensive to maintain.

Hi,must have missed that one, when ,where is it?shows how much notice i take of stuff!
Totally agree about older cars having more character than new cars,i also find the entire driving experience is different, much more involving, also i think driving an older car sharpens the senses, and possibly makes for a safer driver, what with no driver aids to speak of plus brakes that are no where near the standard of modern cars,i find that you really have to concentrate much more in an older car, much less room for complacency!

It is in peterborough. First Week of August. Its a massive event with an autojumble as well. I think it was about £3 last year

I have a beautiful 1977 Ford Fiesta MK I 1300, metallic gold, drives like a dream. You may have seen it around Sheffield, especially S1, S10,11 and S6 areas....as far as I know its the ONLY metallic gold pre 1980 Fiesta in the area.......

Certainly cheap insurance for me too, unfortunatly im still waiting for them to alter the tax threshold from 1973,mines a 1976!
as for parts ect they are great, they may break down more but parts are usually dirt cheap and they are so much easier to fix,no electric/computer stuff!
There are so many advantages to owning a classic, especially if you have a fairly short commute, but the best bits the admiring looks you get, someone always fondly rememembers old cars as one they may have had.

Its based in Stannington but has been known to venture as far south as Newquay!! Had it for 10 years and cant bear to part with it, 10,000 miles a year every year and only broken down TWICE, once with a snapped clutch cable (Simple repair) and once when the radiator hose burst, again a simple repair. Its now on its 200,000K run and shows no sign of losing steam. Damm fine cars for a Ford.....much better than the 'new Fiestas'.....my mate has one, its 9 months old and has broken down 5 times, 3 times involved a tow truck and twice left him stranded on the M1. Not good......

Talking of my restoration work, I am in need of some MKI spares if anyone has an old wreck lying around.......me inside door handle broke off last month and I cant seem to find one anywhere.

PS the avatar is from the American car show held at Hooton Roberts in 1995 (if I remember right). The car was my `78 Camaro, which I bought that year from Rotherham.

Guilty as charged, although "classic cars" have character I would rather have safety, handling, acceleration, good mileage, good looks, reliability, comfort, lower emisions, and less noise polution.

If they stop building em it is nearly always because they have been superceeded by some thing better/safer/quieter/cleaner etc. etc...

I have a spitfire too! It's a red '77 1500 that I have owned for four years. I made a website about it ages ago, it's not been updated for years but you can take a look here http://www.spit1500.co.uk/

I'm also selling the car too, advert here: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7836

I didn't know the first thing about cars when I bought her, but now know so much having done loads of jobs on the car, it's a great learning experience!

Driving round country roads in with the roof down in the spitfire is some of the best fun that I have ever had, it's such a great buzz! I really love the handling on the spitfire, it's so responsive and you really feel part of the car.

I also think that spitfires are one of the best looking production cars ever made, those michelotti curves are to die for!

I've got a K reg ford orion for sale too if anyone's interested in that?

Yeah, cars are no longer the things they once were.
Sure, they are generally safer, quieter, more comfortble etc , but they are cheaply produced and disposable. And current car styling starts to look dated very quickly.
Look at the Focus. Groundbreaking at lauch, but after a few short years it looks so old and boring. Ugh.

For the same price as an modern box, you can get your ass in an old drop-topped, V8 beast. Yeah - it might leak, and require attention, and take a lot of effort to pilot, but who cares?

It's not for everyone, admittedly, but it's the only way for some folk...

goldenfleece
11-03-2004, 15:53
MODERNCARD= CRAP!!! SImple to say.

Safe yes, effeicient yes, pleasurable experience NO WAY!
Distinctive styling NO WAY!! Will last 20 years NO WAY!!

Buying classic allows people like us to drive cars we would never be able to afford to buy new.

I cant afford a TVR sagaris, but I can afford an old 350i.

I'm sure people would be more interested in classics if they realised what you can get hold of.
Anyone here fancy a Bentley? Roller? Bristol? Aston? They're all available for suprisingly little outlay.

And classic insurance and tax exemption can balance out the possibly high running costs... :)

over-zealous moderation, I wish the moderators would just let things be sometimes, it is often just not necassary to move threads, and comes across as highly pedantic when they do.

Moderators - please move this thread back into the main sheffield chat!

chri5
12-03-2004, 13:59
Yes, just though I was going mad trying to find this thread. Though to myself "well there is no reason for it to be moved"
If a thread proves popular then why move it. There was a Sheffield connection and none of the contributors though it should be moved?

But anyway, is there any classic ford owners on this forum?

deano
12-03-2004, 14:51
Just had a pm explaining why this thread was moved,
it was deemed to not be about sheffield, hence thats why its here!
Started this topic to see what sort of classic car interest there is in our city, seems there is quite a bit,and alot of owners of "older" cars about.

I've got a "72" spitty dhc and it is great fun although sadly it won't be used in anger until the very back end of the year and I am really gonna miss it this summer.
What a fantastic combination, open top driving,no road tax to pay and £80 a year for the insurance.

Quality Tyres on Woodhouse Road, Cheap , Fair and down to earth for the Mot.

Fuel : Old Fashioned 4 Star from the service station on Whites lane, gleadless, not the Shell place, the one around the corner .

I have an 1988 MG Metro Turbo, not many of these about now, all gone to the great big road in the sky....

I dont use LRP and never have done since its introduction, have heard that it can cause more damage than its supposed to prevent especially if you have a turbo setup. Have been using unleaded with lead additive and octane booster (Millers VSP) and had no problems. Since I've heard about the service station on Whites lane im gonna move back to traditional 4star. Anyone know how much traditional 4 star costs?

They are rare, cant remember the last time i saw one, dunno how much they charge for 4 star, but it wont be cheap, worth it though,i keep meaning to go there, its near my dads, but the traffic round there can be a pain(one way system) and its a tiny garage, worth a visit though.

Yes I use OPTIMAX and and a millers lead additive. Would never touch LRP, as mega_monty says it does more damage than good. Glad to hear 4 star is still avaliable in Sheffield, I think my car will be paying a trip to Whites Lane when it comes out of hiding for the summer.

As said previously I have a 1983 Vanden Plas Maestro in near mint condition with a talking digidash :D

Out of interest where would people reccommend for small body restoration work, that do a decent job and don't charge an arm and a leg?

Top Tread tyres near Bramhall Lane, an MOT test there costs £20, I've had my last 3 cars MOTed there including the spirfire a couple of weeks back, it failed on the emissions and they let me adjust the carbs to get the mixture down to an acceptable level.

Hey Deano.
Glad you like the idea!
So why don't we look into getting a forum classic car group formed. It doesn't have to be just for us Spitty owners( incredibly refined and perfect in every way as we are)anybody else with an interesting motor could chip in to.
I'm off the road at the mo courtesy of a minor health blip but I'm hoping to get my wheels back in the very near future.
and then it's all systems go.

If you really, really ,really want one then buy one through the owners club mate

MAZDA MX-5 OWNERS CLUB
01279 656914

They'll be like most owner's club cars a tad more expensive than the small ad's but lovingly lusted after and cared for.

Hi,bulldog D,sorry bout the late reply, its a great idea,it like you say doesnt need to be restricted to spitfires, since starting this thread i notice there are several other threads about classic cars, best place for servicing, repairs ect, also this thread has attracted alot of interest.
What is the next step?,because its a great idea, think when you get alot of like minded people together its much easier to source spares, exchange knowledge ect not to mention the social side:thumbsup:

Whilst I'd love an old classic for their style, I'd be very worried that if I got into a crash I'd be obliterated by some rigid 5* NCAP car.

For that reason, plus reliability / maintenance issues I wouldn't buy one.

My VDP is all insured now :D Just got to wait for the insurance policy to come through so I can tax it then I will be away.

Well not quite away am restricted to 3000 miles a year :( I struggled to find an insurance company that would insure me ( I am under 25years of age) and price wise I could only afford 3000 miles a year.

Least I will be able to enjoy it on nice sunny days in the peaks now . Classic 80's motoring

Yup Classics now, I know we are all getting old. Mine just passed its 21st B'day. Though they are only now just reaching classic status.

Ford Capri is a good classic too, have seen some nice ones around recently. Would be great owning one. Or owning a Ford Escourt Mk1/Mk2

Would anyone contemplate owning an Allegro now they are classics? :D

I would agree with that, I remember my Dads Allegro was good in snow especially going up the hills in snowy Lodge Moor and Stocksbridge. They were front wheel drive and must have been quite heavy at the front.

Ugh! My parents have got loads of classic cars and they drive me mad with them!
We've got a fifties Land Rover, a Vandam pla (or however its spelt) princess, a Daimler and a old BMW. Until recently we had a Jaguar too but we sold that.
We also ran a wedding cars business with my uncle until a family disagreement ended it!! Doh!!

I have a few cars, the youngest is 19 years old, the oldest 46!!! I have never owned a car less than 10 years old.

I'm close to a family that also has a Triumph GTSpitfire (whats this I hear you ask??) well a Spitfire with GT6 2.0 motor and bulgebonnet. They are also having a GT6 fully restored bottom up, its lush (even though I don't personally like triumphs). Finally they have a TR7 and a number of Dolomites.

Just thought I would tell you that! :p

Hey there!

Don't post much on here, but i saw this thread and i had to get involved. Wanted a classic car for ages, but health and money always hold me back.

Some of you might laugh or think i'm back. But I might be getting an Austin Princess 1700. Always liked the cars..Unfortunately you either like them or hate them..Just a funny shaped car.

Cheers

Actually the princess is much in demand on the "modded-classic"circuit-I believe the brakes/brake cylinders are very much in demand for fitting to other cars.

For my part,I LOVE old cars, but never had the courage of my convictions:blush:If I were to have one,it would have to be a datsun 240/260Z-beautifull cars

When i was only a wee nipper, my dad owned a very well looked after Datsun 160J SSS Coupe. The only thing i recall about that car, is it was FAST. It looked the business and it certainly was the business.

Even in 1976 when the car was new to England. It was a rare thing to see on the roads. Something stupid like 33,000 entered the country. I know it was a low number.

Needless to say trying to find photo's or any for sale in England now, is like trying to find the holy grail.

Had a habit of rusting quicker then the paint could dry. But i honestly never saw this on my dads car. But then i was about 5 when he had it!

Well I'm on the look out for a Princess, i found one recently..But then the seller dropped the bomb shell. He was in Dover!! Eek!

The princess was regarded as being ahead of it's time when new,and is highly respected in classic car circles, being big, comfy , as well as practical, none for sale in this months practical classics mag this month though .

Great to see this thread resurected,it was the first thread i ever started when i joined sf.

Still got my Spitfire although i think this may be the first time in its near thirty year life that it won't be seeing the road this year:( time and financial restraints are against me!! Still it will be back one day.
Incidently if anybody is interested you can commision a professional photographer to take some great photos of your car ( classic or modern) have a montage print showing various shots of the car,the portrait can be any size you like (up to 24"x 24") and framed, very reasonable prices too, make fantastic xmas gifts!!
Email me for more details dean.whitehead3@tiscali.co.uk.

I've been reading this backwards! :)

The place you need to go is a Bayford Thrust petrol station that is, as you say, on Whites Lane at Gleedless Town End. Last time I bough some proper 4 star there about a month ago it was 115p per litre.

You can also buy 5 star from Klotz - they do leaded up to 118 octane at about £50+ VAT for 5 gallons. Not cheap but good fun ;)

Depends what car it is,
For triumph bits try the spitfire graveyard,if it's service items you need (plugs points oil filters ect) try your local motor factors you will be surprised at what they still stock besides alot of older car service items are compatible with other models, got a guide somewhere if it helps. If it's anything exhaust related there is a place on surbiton street s9,they carry a large classic stock.
If you can't find what you want locally, there are hundreds of companies on the net who will deliver next day.

Hope that helps

As there seems to be people here that know more about classic car supplies in sheffield. Can anyone give me a few good places to visit?

I don't know of any places in sheffield that cater for old cars.

What bits are you after?

your club will be the best bet for specialist bits n bobs......but as i said earlier most service items are still available from motor factors, plugs points ect....i was surprised when i called into bullseye car spares in gleadless and asked for a condenser for a 1976 spitfire the bloke never batted an eye and just got his book out and found one off the shelf, halfords (although pricey) usually carry loads of spares for older cars,if not in stock they can get them for you.
I'm trying to think of garages that are older car sympathetic, seen a few older cars parked outside ghia garage on penistone road

The Spitfire Graveyard is pretty good I've still got my Graveyard Christmas present from the wife to fit to my Spitty( an original old gold seal low mileage engine). The rest of the fleet are BMW's, e30 and e21 models, just said goodbye to my e34 Boo Hoo! . The company Passat tends to spoil the cast list but it's there for a purpose.
The e30 Tourer is going on the BMW Car Club stand at the Sheffield Fayre this weekend along with yours truly so here's hoping for good weather.

Don't know anyone who "specialises" in classics in sheffield, but iv'e found most older mechanics really enjoy working on classic cars, think it gives them a chance to do some real mechanic work rather than deal with modern stuff day in day out.

I seem to remember a garage in the renishaw area did alot of work on classics,i will see what i can find out.

I own a Pontiac Trans-Am 6.6litre V8 engine, but i've put it away for good now, unless they find a renewable, clean fuel to run it with.

 At best I get 20 MPG this is tickling the throttle of the M-Way at 55MPH. At worst I get about 3-5 MPH this is opening up the throttle on the MPH, not sure what top-speeds are though as clock only shows up to 85MPH.

Because you enjoy it and if you enjoy it do it!
It's the constant "Why am I doing this" question that makes it fun.
I actually think it's economically and environmentally sound to kep old classics going as long as possible. After all the energy costs in their manufacturing was done years ago and doesn't need to be repeated, unlike if you buy a new car every couple of years. The average mileage by the vehicle is generally very low so minimising carbon emissions etc. There's generally no or very little debt involved in the ownership process. You don't pay road tax on pre '73 and the insurance is for beans. And they can't depreciate if bought correctly.
It's no wonder this thread is so popular!

I love cars full stop really, but IMO classic cars hold more attraction/fascination. Practicality however means I drive a sensible, modern car.
