View Full Version : City Centre Development - More Apartments
Agent Orange 09-03-2004, 12:50 The old Benefits Agency office on West Street (next to takapuna) is to be redeveloped into apartments and office space. Is it a case of building for the sake of it or do we really need more apartments in the city centre, west street especially?! Would like to hear what others think about this.
Sasa frassa rassa Rick Rastardly!
*Snickers like Muttley*
Seriously WTF?! MORE Apartments?! **** greedy developers and sod the Yuppies, don't they have enough Yuppy accomodation in the City Centre already?!
I bet there will be the demand for the flats, so probably yes.
Agent Orange 09-03-2004, 13:14 But instead of building a whole lot of apartments in one area, why not put them in other areas of the city centre so that redevelopment is not just confined to one street/area.

Agreed.
Shame the stupid developers don't see it like that.
Yeah a lot of developments do seem to concentrated around the West Street area, however there have been others around the Leadmill, Ward's Brewery, new flats being built on St Mary's gate(Old Jet petrol station).
Classic Rock 09-03-2004, 13:39 New flats also to be built opposite Safeway behind the Tax office.

That's more like it. A development that will open up and bring a bit of life back into a quieter part of the city centre.

Maybe because people want to live on West Street.
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 14:01 What is everyone complaining for - for the majority of people it makes absolutely no difference to them what is built there. If you're so against them, what do you propose instead???
I'm glad it's happening to be honest, good to see people bringing money in to Sheffield.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for these developments for the same reasons you are, but I feel that too much is being concentrated on one area alone when there are other areas that are in much more need of development than what West Street is.
I believe that the demand for city centre property far outweighs the supply at the current time. New areas probably will start to get developed when they run out of land within the city centre. The problem is, that people want to live in the west street area as it's already well established. Newer areas take time to become popular. the developers will build properties where they can sell them for maximum profit.
Im looking for a flat as we speak but almost every flat iv called in and arout town, nether edge and ecclesall is "student accomodation" like shared houses 4 students appartments 4 students And if you happen to say your not a student the price suddenly bumps up.***** thats what i say. Why dont they start developing places like parson cross and firth park where the students dont wanna live then maybe non-students will get a look in.
NO OFFENCE TO ANY STUDENTS !
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 14:23 If you have a look round town you'll notice it isn't just West Street anyway - what about Millsands, next to St. Mary's Church, Lady's Bridge etc. :)

Yes I agree - The North (East) of the city is still perceived to be a less desirable place to live, particularly for young professionals (or whatever you want to call them). The property prices in the South West of the city, traditionally a sought after area, are now becoming too inflated and unaffordable. The new city centre developments are sucking people into the "city living" lifestyle, and the developers are marketing the flats as such.

Have a look on any of the hundreds of estate agents websites at properties for let - there's loads of 'em and I do mean loads.
As for redeveloping Firth Park and Parsons Cross - what do you do with the people who live there?
I guess it's a good thing if it brings a disused building back to life and adds to the regeneration of the area. Imagine West Street is a bit of a noisy place to live though!
Do you think i havnt looked? Im on the net all day at work and iv been lookig since last november and 4 some reason landlords love students. As for developing places like firth park and parson cross and surrounding areas theirs quite abit of dis used land and buildings round there and it could do with abit of renovation as its a great place to live but just not enough private accomodation to let for all us young ones wanting to move out thats the only reason i was lookin at town areas cos i thaught there was loads.

I'd suggest you buy the Telegraph on Friday and look at the lettings pages, there are loads of properties to rent (for non-students).
I have iv scoured the property guide, sheff star, add mag all the sites i can find but had no look even when iv bin a drive and looked in shop windows and stuff its brilliant student accomodation, lovely student accomodation, student room to let but oh well ill wait 4 1 to come up in firth park which isnt often as there isnt many flats

Yeah, I've also noticed a lack of affordable accommodation in and around the city. I gave up on my search as I simply can't afford to live anywhere near the city centre due to over inflated prices.
exactly these new developments its either 300+ quid per week or student accomodation.

Oh, there was a flat to let just above Mrs Migs Cafe, just off West Street. No idea if it's been taken, but next time I'm up there I will see if the sign is still in the shop window.
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 14:44 You've obviously not looked very hard, I've been looking about 2 days and found loads - off to view one tonight. What sort of price range you looking at?

my price range is about 300 -450 pcm
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 14:53 I am looking for a flat as well, I have been looking 2 days and have found loads, there's more than enough - right, where do you want to live - just town or what?

I think you may have mislead us by saying "per week"!!
all im sayin is all these nice new accomodation in sheffield city centre dont the people who price these realise not everyone wipes their arses on 20 quid notes. Soon they will run out of people who can afford them!
Agent Orange 09-03-2004, 14:56 Don't you think the surge of new properties in the city centre will lower the demand for properties in areas on the outskirts of the city centre and reduce the price of the rents the landlords charge?

Have you tried this website:
www.cityvisitor.com/sheffield/properties.html
Thanks :) That link doesnt work.
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 15:03 Check http://www.saxtonmee.co.uk/ - go to lettings and then property search - a few in there.
Otherwise go to http://www.ukpropertyshop.co.uk/s/Yorkshire/letting_agents_Sheffield.shtml and have a look through that list for loads more agents.
fnkysknky 09-03-2004, 15:14 No probs. Those agents on that site all seem to have a generous list of lettings in Sheffield.

You not thought about sharing a place with your friend(s) so that you can reduce the cost of renting?
Its for me and my boyfriend you see we want to buy in a few years so this is a long term trial to see how we live together

Congrats!!! Where in Sheff will you be moving to? If you don't mind me asking?!
fnkysknky 10-03-2004, 14:21 London Road - it's a flat above a shop, from outside looks a bit nasty but the flat is very, very nice inside and it's more than big enough :D Not moving until beginning of June though as that's when current tenants move out.
