View Full Version : Patronising Look North Feature On Sheffield 05/01/06

I need a rant about this, I really do.

Did anyone see the feature on Look North about cities that had previously had a bad press but were actually quite nice - Wolverhampton being their initial example?

They then moved onto what they speculated to be its Yorkshire equivalent - Sheffield. What followed was a rather sarcastic feature with thinly-veiled references to football hooliganism, failed business projects and a poor traffic system. The conclusion it seemed to arrive at was that Sheffield was good merely because it was on the doorstep of the peaks.

They even seemed to think that the weather here is different to glorious Leeds - that'll be the constant sunshine from Leeds' nether regions then will it?

(Thanks for that, I feel much better now)

I also saw it and found it Patronising but what can you expect from a impartial publically funded BBC, opps being sarcastic.

They slagged off the one way system, slagged off the shops, said Leeds was glamourous, but they did say that we had the most likeable people, but then interviewed the most ugly people they could find on the naff streets of Sheffield.

Down with the Licence fee!

This is what they could have shown in comparison to Leeds

Sheffield has what Leeds has not,

Less traffic,
More Hills and a national park,
The Arena
A stadium that attracts the Rolling Stones
A decent world class pool,
City Hall,
Lots of Fountains,
Better floral displays,
Supertram
The highest placed football team in the football leagues.

Leeds has.
Better Shops,
larger Businesses
Biased Media, both publically funded and private
Lots of land set aside for Leeds Supertram.Opps wont be needing that!
Paul Hudson (thank god!)
More traffic and their own one way system just like Sheffield to put it in.

So yes both Cities have plus a minus points its a pity they have to be so Patronising to their better neighbour down south.

To be fair, the roads in the city are dire, The Moor is a disgrace and some shops in Leeds does seem to have a more glamorous feel to them.

However, it's certainly not on to criticise one of your own. Manchester's equivalent "North West Tonight" doesn't slag off other towns, but promotes the positives from all areas of the region.

Ah, Look Leeds...

Well I have to say, whilst they may be right about our one-way systems, Leeds is a very daunting city to drive round, so they cannot really claim to be better on those grounds.

The most trouble we have with football hooliganism in Sheffield is when Leeds is playing here! And statistically there may be more instances, but then we have two Championship teams in Sheffield whereas Leeds only has one.

In terms of people, both cities are Yorkshire and have similar people, so let's not go there.

Sheffield is a more relaxed place to be, things are being developed fast in the City Centre so things will only get better, it's got lots of nice greenery, some great pubs and lots of other good things.

Oh yes, and we've got trams, and Leeds haven't...

I find it ironic that Look North is running a series on parts of Yorkshire which have been given a bad press given that Look North sanitises its so-called "news" so that it presents Yorkshire as its proud Yorkshire-born presenters would like it to be seen rather than as it really is.

This thread is about a specific feature tonight though - not just the usual malarkey of missing out stories from other bits of the broadcast area.

Leeds? Glamorous? Don't make me laugh! The fact that somewhere has a high concentration of ten-bob millionaires doesn't make it glamorous.

I don't care what they say on Look North. Harry and Christa can **** off, and so can that **** Paul Hudson.

Leeds has branches of 2 shops I think Sheffield needs, namely CEX and MVC.

I want CEX (Computer Exchange) for the cheap games, and MVC for cheap DVDs and games.

Meh, I bet they get disgruntled Sheffielders emailing them all the time, do they acknowledge the mails? Nope.. :loopy:

Email them by all means if you're mad about their representation of Sheffield, just don't expect them to take any notice of you...

There's an MVC in the Alhambra Centre in Barnsley I think, so not too far to go.

Haven't MVC gone bust recently? If so, that means we're just missing one shop!

It's only people in Leeds who give us a bad press anyway. I was surprised to see Sheffield mentioned and I agree it was completely patronising. Sheffield is, after all, Yorkshire's capital of culture (which is probably why BBC North is based in Leeds). All anyone can ever say about Leeds is "it's got a Harvey Nicks". Leeds has an aggressive edge that I don't like.

Just don't watch the rubbish.

I can imagine a nuclear bomb being dropped on Sheffield from a Space Shuttle being flown by Elvis Presley and waiting in my Fall Out Shelter under the moors at Redmires for Look Leeds to come on to see what they had to say.

'Good evening and welcome to Look Leeds.

'On tonight's show: The grass on Leeds United's pitch has grown by one millionth of an inch since yesterday's report; Man sues our lovely Leeds Council after chewing gum sticks to soul of his Hush Puppies. We look forward to the forthcoming Leeds Festival, in 2010; How to paint the Leeds United crest on your toe-nails; and we'll have the weather from Mr Bore Me Rigid Ha Ha Ha himself, for Leeds'.

They dislike us, we dislike them.

Turn the rubbish off.

Look Leeds at it again......

Look at how wonderous "our" city is....... great - oh leeds u have such an amazing city. Its a shame your up your own bottoms.

Look North.... have you not learned your lesson - Sheffield is about to boycott your programme about Leeds. As this would appear, is all it would appear to be about.

Leeds and Leeds United, that's all they're bothered about. With Bradford apparently a close second. Not so long since, on the Saturday evening bulletin, Leeds United's result was mentioned and that was it. First story, only story, thank you and goodnight!

My boyf moved from Middlesex to live up here in Sheffield and he absolutely loves it. The other week he had to make a trip that took him thru Leeds and he sent me a text asking if I wanted him to p**s on the wall at Elland Road ;) Tomorrow I will be getting the rip taken out of me by all his southern cronies for my Yorkie accent which I will exaggerate to death LOL

Isn't there another thread on here about your favourite motorway? Mine would be the M1 out of Leeds and the M62 out of Lancashire :heyhey:

I was thinking more along the lines of the positive stories about Liverpool being the city of culture and all that's going on, the expanding range of flights from Blackpool airport and so on. I've never really noticed any "Blackburn is crap but Manchester is wonderful" type stories.

The question was posed initially on BBC Breakfast and they had a Yorkshire poet writing a poem about 'the Yams!' in Wolverhampton. I think they were scratching for news that night but it wasn't a Sheffield v Leeds debate. Keighley featured one night as a candidate.
They are patronising, though, for I frequently hear: "Thank you for choosing Look North"
I submit corrective e-mails with captions sic (Guiness) mis-spelt on their rugby caption, road names incorrect on the morning travel info, together with "less sweets", "quite unique" and "warmer temperatures" being examples of their own lack of rigour.
