View Full Version : Slimming Pills and Weight Loss
Speed Demon 04-07-2011, 18:17 hi forum members
i am a relatively fit and healthy 31 year old chap, who has a decent body but with some belly fat, which i want to lose, i want a totally flat 6 pack area so i can feel better about myself and hopefully be more attractive to the opposite sex
i have been going to the gym and trying to eat healthy and sensibly, but have heard there are weight loss pills out there and wonder what they do and how to get hold of them, are there other things available to aid in fat loss and to actually burn off the love handles
Plain Talker 04-07-2011, 18:33 Don't touch them with a barge pole. You don't know what rubbish is in these medications.
(Is the simple answer)
Most of the weight loss pills which are available over the counter are based on old wives' tales and rumour when you try to find evidence that they actually work.
That leaves 2 groups of pills left- the pills which 'burn off' more calories and those which prevent you from absorbing fat.
The ones which speed up your metabolism meaning that you use more calories and suppress your appetite (and are prescription only, although strongly discouraged by many doctors) are usually amphetamine based and they come with a whole load of issues with regard to being addictive, causing mood and depression problems and the like, so since you have been open about your occasional struggle with depression I'd say that it would be a very dangerous path to consider taking these.
The final group are the pills which prevent you from absorbing fat in your diet- this group includes orlistat (brand name Xenical) and Alli, which are an over the counter version. The claims of these pills are much less outlandish than the ones which work on myth. The advertising for Alli claims that for every 2 pounds you lose normally, if you were to take Alli you could lose another 1 pound, making it clear that you still would have to eat a calorie restricted and low fat diet to see an improvement, which is the case with all of the pills in this category.
They also have side effects, like anal leakage if you eat food containing fat and a few other unpleasant things, but there are also people who have had good results with them.

First of all I'm worried about some of your comments which are that you can only get a woman by having a six pack or being attractive.
Do you think James Corden has a six pack or attractive? He's not doing too badly to say, is he?
Men tend to carry most their weight around the area you're worried about. I train 4, 5 and sometimes 6 nights a week, eat well and have a podge.
You can only attract a woman with who you are, not with what your body looks like. She'll get bored of your body, not your personality.
Those pills speed up your heart rate...Do you really wanna mess with your heart?
Train for fun my friend and change a little of your diet...If you're interested in burning fat and building muscle then maybe one of our circuit training sessions will help you?
Just remember that working out wont help you approve of what you have already.
Speed Demon 04-07-2011, 21:37 i am also hoping to have a full body wax soon as well because lets face it, no lass wants a hairy care bear to be with that is for sure
I've been on xenical about 4 weeks now, i was eating more or less normally but not eating anything with fat in it, i didnt think they were doing owt, until last sunday.. i had 2 porkburgers and i had the runs for 4 days and the stink made me sick. the xenical tablets are twice as strong as Alli which can be bought at the chemist. just wish they could come up with an appetite suppressor as i just love food savoury or sweet and now i'm retired i cook and bake more

What the hell are you on Jay. ?
Do you glean all your "knowledge" from porn sites. ?

That's twaddle to be honest.
If I met someone who had the full cosmetic waxing thing done it would worry me a little why he felt he had to change himself so far away from his normal, natural self in order to be attractive.
To me, that level of waxing is inappropriate and slightly creepy on a woman too, but if that's what you want then of course nobody should tell you any different.
My OH is ridiculously hairy (body hair- unfortunately the follicles on the top of his head seem to have been affected by gravity and are now in his eyebrows and ears instead) and I regularly take the rise out of him for being an orang utan (it's a fetching shade of ginger) but I take him as a package deal of personality, hug, sense of humour, furry body, love, knackered knees, smokers' cough and smelly feet, and whether he was furry or not would not have made the slightest bit of difference whether I wanted to be with him, apart from making me distrust him a bit if I found he had a full body wax.
As Tipex says above, whether someone finds you attractive will have very little to do with whether you have body hair and if they use that as a reason not to be with you then they were not the sort of person that you really should have been with in the first place.

Some women are turned on by a chap with body hair!
(look at Robin Williams the actor! http://www.squarehippies.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/robin_williams.jpg

Speed Demon 05-07-2011, 10:27 well it is not just about feeling attractive to other people, it is about feeling cleaner, because having too much body hair makes you feel rather dirty, especially with bits falling out all over the place, it is like when blokes have a fresh clean wet shave, it makes you feel better
there is also the fact that if girls have had a leaner, more tidy man before then go on to me, it would surely be a big let down and rather shameful for them
I can understand the wanting to be cleaner thing but not to be bald. Have you tried just trimming first? Then maybe get a patch waxed rather than the whole body? Waxing is great but it can be very uncomfortable when the hair starts growing back and you could suffer with ingrown hairs which are awful! Especially if they are all over your body.
The other thing, of course, is that a large number of women find over-grooming a complete turn off too. Blokes whose beauty routine takes longer than mine do nothing at all for me- sorry. The other thing to think about is cost, both in money and time for maintenance.
Having a body wax takes upkeep, including using baby oil to remove left over wax (with a mirror if necessary) after every time you get done, exfoliating to reduce ingrown hairs and moisturising all over once you've exfoliated. If you aren't prepared to spend the time and money to maintain your skin once you've been waxed, then don't go down the route of being waxed in the first place.
Listen to Medusa, jason. She knows what shes talking about.
I've been on xenical about 4 weeks now, i was eating more or less normally but not eating anything with fat in it, i didnt think they were doing owt, until last sunday.. i had 2 porkburgers and i had the runs for 4 days and the stink made me sick. the xenical tablets are twice as strong as Alli which can be bought at the chemist. just wish they could come up with an appetite suppressor as i just love food savoury or sweet and now i'm retired i cook and bake more
Thats no true even in the slightest! Some people like it :)
Also it doesn't matter what your body looks like, it's the person inside that counts. Trust me, I've never been happy with the way I look, until recently when reality struck. As the saying goes you can't judge a book by it's cover.
virgoen18 12-07-2011, 11:34 I love a hairy chest on a man although a hairy back is a bit of a turn off. I agree with Medusa though there is nothing more of a turn off than a man who is so groomed and takes ages to get ready for bed. If a man is more groomed and in to his face creams than me I find it a bit weird.
Speed Demon 15-07-2011, 09:38 do those pills burn the fat off then, how do they work

Fone Alone 15-07-2011, 10:20 There is a number of foods which are fat burners and work by speeding up your metabolism just like the pills, if you google 'fat burning foods' you should get a list of quite a few different foods, the hot chili pepper is aparently a good one they've even made it in tablet form!
spotty dog 15-07-2011, 11:26 Xenical work by getting rid of 30% fat in your diet.the ones I have are 3 times stronger than alli that is now available in shops.

Annointed 21-07-2011, 19:08 If them slim pills really do work, why's america still the fatest nation in the world. And why are our obesity figures this high here in UK? I say eating less, regular fasting too, ( One day a week missing breakfast and lunch will do you so much good) eating proper home cooked food, and exercise are the real deal.

Brilliantly put Kay
As a nation in 2011 we have highly paid experts on the case, we have nutrition advice on the TV almost every day, we have campaigns endorsed by fading stars to beat the problem of obesity,we have experts in the classroom boring the kids to death about obesity....... yet the obesity problem is growing.
What was so different about the 1980s? yes, there was often the odd overweight kid in each class but that was probably the way that child was.
The difference is, kids were playing out instead of being indoors on Wi's or playstations. The compensation thing had not been invented at that time so sports activitys could thrive.
I do think if we were more active (kids playing) then obesity would drop. I do think the compensation culture and highly paid experts (self interest - need to keep themselves in work) are the main culprits.
And finally as Kay said, healthy home cooking instead of microwaved meals.
The only thing I would disagree with are missing out on Breakfast of lunch one day a week? I love my food and the more the better ;)

Fasting and missing breakfast...is this a joke? that will slow down the metabolism making it harder for it to burn off calories.
People these days are at a tug of war with people telling them ''this is good, this is bad'' I say eat as you please in moderation which will keep weight undr control.
Also people have eaten takeaways for years and it's only now we're seeing people really struggle with weight, and it's all because of these false fat free meals, slimming pills, fasting, etc.
We must also look at people like my work colleague who sleeps alot and eats mcdonalds and kfc during the day. He hasnt gained weight but eats more than your slow burnin calorie person on these silly diets.
Eat less! cut on portions thats the best and most effective method....and no take away [removed] :loopy:

eat less thats right, but honey, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it gives strength to function, without breakfast you can simply faint...plus hungry all day you will stuff yourself in the evning before bed which is even worse than eating all day...
I say its better to eat more often but smaller portions, that will keep you filled but your stomach small....the best option is eat healthy and normally 3 times a day just cutting every meal by 1/3

I'm joining slimming world on Thursday I prefer it to weight watchers,
Go online and find your nearest group, them just turn up! I think thats the best way, people are so friendly and everyone is there for the same reason so don't be shy, just be yourself :)

Them hunger pangs? I've learnt that its all in the head. You can ignore them to an extent. This of course works best if you have money in your pocket, your fridge is well stocked up , and are engaged in some work or something else you love doing. (Does not include sitting in front of Day time telly). If not, then them hunger pangs will be magnified a thousand times over!!!! ( Further proof its all in the head).
The fainting thing has a lot to do with one's general fitness levels. I've just fasted for a month, breaking my fast at 6pm daily with a cup of soup, light bread + multivitamins, all through it engaged in active work plus singing and dancing. End of it has been all great. I feel good physically and mentally. I've even gone and retrieved a couple of suits that had been laid away due to a slightly oversized waist line. Its a great feeling, they fit like new!!. You don't have to eat huge portions of food, you've got to take charge, you are the boss, you decide when you eat and how much. I feel sorry for some people who can't even conquer a cookie, they eat one and before you know it they have vaporised a dozen!!! No, unless your metabolism is super efficient you will get fat, very very fat. Someone's said it well , "what you eat today, walks around tomorrow".::D.

Fainting, if you are not eating sufficiently, is usually down to low blood sugar levels.
Annointed 05-03-2012, 10:14 Fainting, if you are not eating sufficiently, is usually down to low blood sugar levels.
But if you take someone who eats lots of food, more than sufficient that is, and have them run a short distance, they quickly get breathless and have a fainting feeling. They wanna sit down.

A few people are like that. Even during our school years, we had chaps who would just sit through a lecture and pass well, or study a couple of nights before exam day and do better than those who camped in the library.: confused:

thats because of lack of oxygen to the brain caused by physical exercise which they are not used to, if they did regular exercise they would see that change and not get those feelings anymore

True that, but I used that in response to plain talker assertion that one must have breakfast other wise they'lll wind up with fainting spells during the day. I said no, cos I missed breakfast for one month but didn't get no fainting spells. My arguement was you don't have to eat everday, especially if weght is an issue, you can train your stomach to require less by not filling it to the brim every time it rumbles. If you ignore it,perhaps just drink a glass of water, the rumbles will die down, you've got to take your mind off it as well. thats where I said it's improtant to be busy.

yes i agree, i have cut down my eating massively, i never used to eat breakfast and always sat around late at night eating takeaways etc, now i always have breakfast and dont eat after 7pm, and it has helped me feel alot better.
apart from making me feel healthier it has helped me get into a better routine.

You've taken charge! :clap:You are in control. :banana:You give the orders now, not some rumbling ball of muscle fibre inside you. You can also start using smaller plates. Just serve yourself a normal helping ( You should tell what is normal or ask a friend). If you feel "Not full" after that plate, don't take another round, just ignore that feeling, you will soon not feel any need to get for a second helping. You could go for a second helping though if the first portion was really scaled down. Find another hobby, TV is a killer.
It’s worse than smoking according to research. There’s been research done to show that on average, every hour of television a person watches reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by almost 22 minutes.” Watching more than six hours of TV a day will shorten your lifespan by an amazing five years. Even watching just two hours of TV a day can shorten your lifespan by almost two years.
Don’t get me wrong though, you can watch TV but not too much of it. You should know what too much is. Someone has said its not watching TV that’s bad, it’s what you are not doing because you are watching TV. You’re not moving around and exercising. Typically people munch on food when they watch television. Finally, watching television for long hours can contribute to loneliness because you aren’t being as social.
Three Consequences of Watching Too Much TV
1. Diabetes: Prolonged television watching 9 More than 3 hours ?day),could increase your chance of getting Type 2 diabetes. According to a recent research review, more than three hours of television watching a day may put you at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. “
2. Weight Gain: TV can turn you into a couch potato may be partially to blame for weight gain, high blood pressure and heart disease risk
3. Headaches and Back pain: Recent research suggests that spending an excessive amount of time on screen-based activities may be bad for your back. The results show a consistent association between time spent on screen-based activities and incidences of headache and backache among the youths.

either way, i didn't mean for it to come across like im a BIG guy i haven't really got that much on me tbh i have abit of a belly but who doesn't, my routine changed alot because my work did which has helped, and i did it for myself to make life abit better for me.
Hi Demon,
Keep regular in gym and follow healthy and balanced diet plan and avoid using diet pills as they are not good for health. Diet pills can effect your brain and may results lack of effectiveness. Diet pills have lack of safety regulation and may cause liver problem or can lead to depression, anxiety, stroke and cardiovascular issues.
ELizabetta 01-12-2012, 15:40 There's absolutely NO substitute for a diet and that takes discipline and hard work. I've been on the strongest fat burners that exist and they didn't work. You'll never convince me.
Also Jodie Marsh, Madonna etc are celebrities who were dancers and models beforehand and always had low bodyfat so you can't go by them or what they were supposed to have used.
ELizabetta 01-12-2012, 15:50 Well if people kept to a controlled diet they wouldn't need slimming pills at all.
For the price of your pills someone could pay me to make out a diet for them and their specific needs and lifestyle.
Not that I'm advertising of course:))
