people in stannington should have got a newsletter about getting broadband. if enough people sign onto http://www.bt.com/btbroadband/register/ns_register_intro.jsp they will connect broadband to alot more people in stannington.

It's a good idea to get everybody to sign the thing, personally I'm already on broadband cos I pay a premium rate of £46 a month for Wireless DSL from a company who change their name more often than I change my socks, they've been Tele2, Liberty Broadband, FirstNET and now they're Pipex.

The service is great even though it's only 512k a second, and I've seen a 2 Mb connection for just over half the price which allegedly is in my area from Bulldog.

Whereabouts in Stannington are you? I just checked my phone number on Freeserve's web site and they said I'm too far away from the exchange to get their broadband, and the bloody exchange is only at Wadsley Bridge, granted I'm right up the top end of Stannington nearly but that still sucks ass.

LONG LANE, just down from the Riding stables, apparently just within range so said BT engineer....not sure about further out.

PS I just checked my own phone number out on the FS website and I got a RED no service warning as well....but they installed the service and it works!! I suggest you ring them up, and then get BT to do a full check, and ask for a line test which is what I did.......

Trouble is though, I'm reluctant to fork out £150 for BT to come and tell me something I already know, that I can't get their BB.

I'm already on BB at the moment, from Tele2 aka Liberty aka FirstNET now aka Pipex, and it serves my purpose but it's £46 a month cos it's Wireless DSL.

I was just looking into BT or Freeserve cos they're cheaper.

Well its £29 yes so not fantastically cheaper. Still, I think BT will do a FREE line test if you call them, or ask FS to so it by calling them....ignore their web site, it also tells me I am out of range, which is a joke as I am sitting here typing away connected 24/7 at the full 512 KBPS rate freeserve Broadband service!!

If you order it from them, they refund you if it does not work, at least they told me that when I signed up, it worked, and I was happy. Give it a try.....you have nothing to lose if they switch it on and nothing happens, as BT wont charge for enabling a line to ADSL if they decide they cant do it.

Living on practically the last road in stannington I can't seem to get anything. I was told that if over 500 people in a certain radius sign up for broadband then it will be upgraded, I have lost count of how many times i've tried to sign up.

If you can afford £30 a month for a 1Mb connection, apparently www.bulldogdsl.com's SDL services come up stannington on their extended reach thingy, even though the exchange is at Wadsley Bridge like all the others.

I did the checks on their web site for my phone number and post code and it said they were in my area, so I'm sure they'll come far enough up for you as you're only in the Village aren't you?

Incorrect I am afraid, Stannington has access to ADSL broadband via the Wadsley Bridge exchange, people do not need to pre-register as the exchange is enabled. The Problem is with people line noise/loss not able to support ADSL. If BT or ofcom amend the levels required then you might have better luck. :)

Same as my last post, your line is outside the line loss levels nothing in the area can be upgraded no matter how many people invoke intrest.

BullDog do not offer SDSL off the Wadsley Bridge exchange only standard ADSL that you would get off any other supplier.
Also SDSL if it was offered would not reach further as the service is same upload and download thus you would need to be closer to the exchange!!

The reason you got an RED line result is due to an existing broadband service!!!
This is just to stop people ordering more than one ISP on the same phone line. :)

Please advise where you get the £150 price from?
Place an order with Vispa or PlusNet or Eclispe as they are known to place manual orders on customer request.
(If you want contact details I can PM them to you.)

Hi everyone,

I believe I may be in a position to help out with any queries on getting broadband and any general Internet queries.

Ask any questions, I would be glad to help put to the best of my abilities.

Bookey, shut up.

I have done all the checks on Bulldog's web site and they said they were able to give me broadband.

So I'm planning to ring 'em up later and make some enquiries.

Also, does Bookey live in Stannington? I think not, therefore he can't really make assumptions about broadband availability in the area.

No but I did and still do work in broadband deplyment with an certain large telco and have historical links with the said DSL provider.
Also I did look at Stannington as a area to live in but due to house I looked at being out of line levels for DSL I declined.

i currently have 512 bb from bt
and tried to get 2mb from bull dog. went through with the order, they took money off me and everything then i got a phone call saying i would be refunded as although the initial test says i was in the area the actual line test says i am too far from an exchange i live in castle court s2, or there could be contamination in my line.....
i could have cable but owing to the fact that telewest dont want to unstall me....
we are stuck with bt

I have Freeserve broadband in STannington and also just spoke to a mate up in the village.....he did a phone number test on the FS site and it shows GREEN, so it looks like most of this part of S6 is now set up for broadband. Does not seem to be a problem now....

I'm in the process of moving to Stannington and my current supplier, Plusnet, tells me:

Your exchange has Broadband ADSL. However, initial tests indicate that your distance from your local exchange is too far to provide you with a Broadband service.

Is there a supplier who can give me broadband despite this? Will it match Plusnet's monthly charge of £21.99 for 512k?

Is Stannington S6? If so, this is the same prefix our family members have (Bell Hagg Road area, Walkley) - they are with Virgin - (a crap ISP in my opinion), but it took longer than usual to set up ADSL at there new address, whereas in there previous property (Psalter Ln, S11) it didn't take all that long - in fact a lot shorter length of time.

Alex

P.s - Just remembered-the song was "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" not whatever I said previously - anyway, I liked my dreadful quip!

I'm lucky enough to be on the Telewest Broadband Cable Service (they bought out Yorkshire Cable)

The Internet service is fantastic for £25 per month.

I love just down the road, near the top of Wood Lane, it took three attempts to get ADSL before BT in its infinite wisdom decided I could have it.

Thanks to the extended reach trials. Before which I was 400 metres beyond the Wadsley bridge "boundry".

Chances are you may have it soon as BT have a new extension trial that should in theory reach everyone in Stannington.
