Sheffield Hallam is apparently one the most affluent areas in the country, but Sheffield as a whole isn't particularly affluent, in fact much of it is quite effluent, which makes me wonder if the people there are locals and how they made/make their money.

West Sheffield is traditionally factor-owners' country. Now it's Sheffield's middle-class - government/university staff, private sector middle-managers and above etc.

In other cities richer people have moved well out and commute in for work - London has the home counties, Manchester has Cheshire, Leeds has North Yorkshire, etc. Sheffield has Barnsley to the north, Rotherham to the east, the peaks to the west and Chesterfield and Derbyshire to the south. If you had loads of dosh you wouldn't go and live in Barnsley or Rotherham, there is little habitation westwards past Ranmoor and Totley, and Chesterfield is alright but you'd want better for your money. I assume when the west side of Sheffield was built it was because the people with money thought it was the best location to invest their money given the other options, and newcomers since then have thought likewise.

Historically the wealthy factory owners resided in the South West as the smoke from the factory chimneys blew in a North Easterly direction. They chose to live there to avoid the smoke. I grew up in Bowdon, Cheshire which is South West of Manchester. The money there was 'old' money. It wasn't originally inhabited by the nouveau riche we see today with the likes of the MU players. The people there now are all privately educated in public schools, hence the 'posh' accents...similarly to Sheffield.

Why buy 3 carrots and 2 spuds if you only need 2 carrots and one spud, just common sense really.
The case that it also has the lowest rate of smokers and lowest users of the national lottery in Sheffield, peaks volumes
