Sometimes at the back there is an emergency contact address and maybe phone number, you should probably try that first, as the police just probably file it as lost and found.

Just a suggestion.

You are better off taking to the local police station and telling them where abouts you found it

I'd create several false identities, apply for dozens of false mortgages, then flee the country with millions of quid.

You could ask these people (http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/forms/f_generalenq.asp) what you're supposed to do with it

What did they say?

I'm sure you have to hand it in to a police station. I seem to remember that you are actually required by law to take it to a police station.

If the holder has reported it lost it's no good to them any more.

I lost a passport about a year back and the amount of attempts I had at filling in a new form was ridiculous!!

They rejected it for so many daft reasons, I literally went through about 12 forms.

I filled in the online form of the passport office and have now handed it in to Hammerton Rd police station. The website asks where the find was reported to so they should now have enough information to return it to the rightful owner.

Is it a UK Passport? What we do at work if an applicant wants their Passport sent back to their country of origin (illegal to send it over international waters), then we send it back to their embassy in London. You coud do that if it's a foreign one?

when i got my new passport, they gave me the old one back too, but just cut the corners off the front cover. Now what am i supposed to do with it?! Is it safe to throw away?

I actually think it's a great idea to keep the old passports for ID purposes. For the youngsters amongst us it's a good way of 'proof of age' and prevents the loss of valid ones.

ps. When I say 'valid' ones I mean 'current' ones. I'm not suggesting the old ones be made into forgeries. Just thought I'd make that clear!

 Er, no!! it would easily be doctored into a false document

I bet they're made of the same stuff as cheques, and don't burn either

Have you got access to a cross cut shredder? one that chops it into little bits instead of strips
