E-Man Groovin 04-01-2006, 16:23 Good on you guys! Just what is needed - some diversity in Sheffield's nightlife. I used to go to a mod retro night called Pussy Galore in Brighton (in the 1990s)which was well cool - all sharp suits, pointy shoes and feather boas.
Might even pop in one day to see what you guys are all about.
i'll some of this....oh yes:thumbsup:
Modculture 04-01-2006, 17:39 Should be good. We ran a night called Outta Sight in Manchester last year that went down really well - the local paper reckoned it "breathed new life into the city's club culture".
By that, I think they mean't we had people in having a good time as opposed to trying too hard! ;)
You can sign up for membership at the modculture website - cheaper entry and freebies probably (we gave away regular CD compilations last year).
Modculture 05-01-2006, 15:48 And forgot the link for free membership (cheap entry, free stuff etc)
http://www.modculture.co.uk/sheffield/
Ta!
hisknibs 06-01-2006, 12:23 should be a good night, lookin forward to this ...................... about time there was a decent mod night on in sheffield!
Modculture 06-01-2006, 13:39 Well "hisknibs", if you're around during the day, there's also a daytime do at the Washington pub in the city centre.
It's a good excuse to have a bit of a mod 'bring and buy' sale of records, clothing and collectables, with some DJ decks being set up for the playing of quality tunes.
All welcome, free to get in, just email us in advance at email us if you want a stall or just turn up if you don't because it'd be great to see people and it'll be a laugh.
For further details or if you want a stall, please contact sheffield@modculture.co.uk or send us a PM or something.
Dave W
hisknibs 06-01-2006, 13:53 cheers...................... is that the washington on fitzwilliam st?
Modculture 06-01-2006, 14:18 Yep - that's the one!
Might check it out if you swear not to play any R&B like you mentioned
Modculture 06-01-2006, 17:15 When we say R&B, we mean gritty early to mid 60s soul, not the modern day music that uses the same name! :)
About time there was a proper 60s mod night in Sheffield, especially now Brighton Beach is no longer at the City Hall.
I take it this night will be similar music to the smaller room at Brighton Beach?
Hope so!
Modculture 08-01-2006, 13:15 Hi Claire,
Yes, it'll be a diverse set of mod-friendly tunes covering everything from 60s soul to later 60s sounds. We're being really strict on DJ selection to make sure the music is top notch - but yes, similar kind of thing to the BB small room.
And it'll be cheaper to get in that Brighton Beach with membership.
We now may have an 'after hours' add-on club too - we'll be telling members about this, so the club could go on to sbout 7am!!! :o
All the best,
Dave
hisknibs 09-01-2006, 09:15 small room at BB city hall was great, been to the one at the uni , just as good .............. cheaper drinks and you can get to the bar!
Modculture 09-01-2006, 09:18 Does anyone know if the Sheffield Brighton Beach will ever be returning to the City Hall?
hisknibs 09-01-2006, 09:27 i don't think it will...............
Modculture 09-01-2006, 09:40 Good news for us - but bad news as it was a great venue (not seen it since re-fit).
Modculture 16-01-2006, 07:31 Just flagging up that this is this coming Saturday!
Please come along and support us - as well as it being a top night in the making, it's also attempting something very different in city centre Sheffield, which adds to the choice out there.
You'll not regret it. And after this one, we're going to be bi-monthly at the same place, all being well!

Ahh....Pussy Galore! I used to love going. Loved Brighton in the mid ninties, there was some great mod nights!!
Anyways, I'll be along to this without fail!
Bully_Beef 16-01-2006, 11:48 This looks ace, will try to get down there.
I love a good boogaloo to some mod toons me... :D
Hi,
Didn't know where to get tickets for this, will we be alright paying on the door?
Modculture 18-01-2006, 09:25 Hiya,
We do hope and expect it to be a busy night, but we're not selling tickets in advance. We're doing cheap entry early doors though - just £3 to get in if you can make it before 10.
Or if you want to come a little later, you can sign up to the free online membership, which gets you in for £4 whenever you turn up.
Membership details here (http://www.modculture.co.uk/sheffield/)
Not long to go now - I'm quite excited. It could all go horribly wrong and no-one turn up - I hope not!!!!!
Modculture 20-01-2006, 09:12 Well...just one day to go before this (it's tomorrow!)
Details of the night are at:
The Pow Wow Club website (http://www.modculture.co.uk/sheffield/)
and details should also be in tonight's Telegraph.
Please come along and support us - we'll probably lose money on the night, but that's not the point - we just want to put on a great night in Sheffield with top music and above all, a friendly atmosphere. No dress code, no snobbery and no overplayed wedding music! :hihi:
Look forward to seeing you,
Dave

EdnaKrabappe 22-01-2006, 17:10 So who went? What was it like? Is it anything like Brighton beach used to be when it was at the City Hall?
I was going to come down but had to go to a friend's family party.
I love anything Mod but the mate who i go down town with is a tolerator of it really so will she be really bored or is there some mainstreamish stuff as well?
When is the next one? Can I ask any more questions?!!!
Modculture 22-01-2006, 18:41 Well, it was rammed - club and dancefloor, the club finished at 2, we moved the club onto another venue and it continued until 6am! :o
Thanks to all who came - but a special thanks to Jarvis Cocker for turning up and paying the full entry fee - that's proper celebrity for you!
We're now all off for 2 months sleep, but will wake up in time for the next one in March, where our guest DJs are Mikey and Paul from Glasgow's (in)famous Friday Street club. Expect no sleep at all that weekend with another marathon event.
I'll have some photos on the modculture site of everyone (including Jarvis) by Monday morning.
PS - as for Brighton Beach, all the BB residents DJ'd at some point during the night!
All the best,
Dave
I'm glad this went well. Well, it sounds like it went more than well.
I was away from Sheffield yesterday, but I will defo try and get to the next one.
Good on you marra.
Modculture 22-01-2006, 19:00 Some pics of the night now online (http://www.modculture.co.uk/gallery2/clubs/powwow1/)
That looks ace!
Looks a good mix of people in mod get up, and people who are there just cos they like the music, but not garbed up.
Nice one.
I spotted one guy there who gets mistaken for Jarvis quite a bit in Sheffield..... but alas, the real Jarv was there.
So then, when you strutting this night out again?
Modculture 22-01-2006, 19:22 Hiya,
Saturday March 18th is the next one. We do it as a labour of love rather than for money, so it's occasional and treated as an event.
If we did it weekly, I think none of us would see December...!
All the best,
Dave
So will Jarvis make this a regular thing
Modculture 23-01-2006, 12:51 I can't for a minute imagine so, but I'm sure he had a good time. :)
well we thought is was a brilliant night, absoulutely, fantastic atmosphere and some great tunes, will defo be at the next one:thumbsup:
nice to meet ya dave btw:thumbsup:
