I stand by my statement that to flame people with inappropriate humour is a denial of freedom of speech. Eventually, it would reach the point where no-one would post anything of a serious nature for fear of ridicule.

That is what I'm trying to avoid happening on this particular thread but we appear to have achieved that by straying onto the rights and wrongs of moderated forums, again.

If you want to continue the debate then I suggest you start another thread.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posted by Max on the original thread which maybe you should look up.... I told a joke and was threatened with a ban.... the joke was one of self ridicule and hardly offensive to anyone.... is this another case of pc out of control? I start my thread Max.

I usually enjoy reading the banter in some of the threads but i do think if a poster has taken the time to post a serious question we should resist the temptation to make jokes about it.
When i click on a thread topic i usualy expect the debate to be about the subject in the title.
There are so many posts on here now which are just chat room flirting and it get's a bit tedious after a while.
On the other thread the poster is fairly new and i would emagine will be wondering what's the point of posting.

Just for information it wasn't your joke which prompted my initial post it was from another contributor who has a habit of spoiling threads.

Does anyone agree that I should be threatened with a ban for telling a harmless self ridiculing joke on a thread though.... I was merely trying to be funny and lighten the tempo.... George Orwell .... eat your heart out.

So why did you threaten to ban me?.... you also enclosed my reply in your " notice to ban ".... and then invited me to open up a thread about it.... which I did. Explain please.

Because I had already posted a warning about inappropriate humour spoiling a serious issue.

Using a line from Little Britain, 'the only gay in the village' is hardly the best choice for a title for a serious thread about sexuality is it? If its meant to be serious then surely you'd give it a serious title?

That is your opinion and not your right to determine.... I told a self aimed joke.... not at anyone else.... sometimes it takes a bit of humour to break the mindset of a situation and often un-inflame one.... as I said before.... you are neither a policy writer for the people under their vote or a God.... your job is to moderate peoples behaviour.... ie. bad attitude, swearing, blatant racism, incitement etc. Don't try to tell me I cannot tell a joke unless it is in the correct forum.... you must have heard a quip during a sensible conversation before.

If someone posts a serious question, respect it.

If you want to make smart-alec jokes, do it in the right place - the 'I'm really bored' section. This is something that has been drilled in to numerous posters in the past - that's what that part of the Forum is for.

Whilst we try to respect 'freedom of speech' there are also Forum rules to ensure that your freedom to express yourself doesn't crap over someone else's. That's also called respect for other people's views.

Quips are fine - but sometimes they're just not appropriate. And there are times when jokes get made between people who know each other and can put up with it.

Anyway, enough from me - please bear this in mind.

Thanks,

Joe

I do respect what you have said and I do agree.... but I think my quip was harmless.... not aimed at anyone except myself.... I don't think I broke any rules with that.... it is sometimes nice to inject a bit of humour into conversation as long as it not directed to harm anyone.... we all inject humour into a conversation.... no one has ever complained to me before.... as I don't seek to upset intentionally.

You may well be able see it for what it is and not intend to upset anybody before you hit the submit button.

Other people may not be as bright.

"I fundamentally disagree with what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it"
Unless it ticks one of the boxes in the mod's personal newspeak checklist apparently?

There is a thread currently running (for over a week now) with a title about a local band called "freekspurt".
This thread quickly moved into a discussion about an individual called "Barry".
His character is being debated, reported on in many different ways. Some complementary but some also negative or even abusive.
This "Barry" is not taking part in the discussion but there is enough information for me to identify him and even where he works.

How does this square with people getting upset about the posting of information that may be regarded as "personal"???

:( You're absolutely right, Cgksheff

I myself have posted on that thread - in a complimentary fashion - but, you're right, it has breached the individual concerned's privacy.

That is quite concerning.....

Because... as we keep saying, over and over and over again, we DO NOT read every post. If you have a concern then use the 'report this post' function.

Because I am subscribed to this thread I am now aware of it, so I will go and have a look. It's not exactly the most efficient way of doing it though is it?

As this thread has turned into yet another mod slag fest I'm shutting it. Please feel free to use one of the others.
