View Full Version : Council wasting money on Winn Gardens

Just seen on lower Wadsley Park Village (Winn Gardens) the latest by the council.

The council have erected a 4 foot wide barrier to stop a bike (literally)from coming down the path. The foot path is actually about 10 feet wide.

It's not even strategically placed so the biker can just open up and hurtle past the barrier.

I guess rates are going up again....

I know they have put barriers to stop access to middlewood park and playing fields by bikes and cars. (v.good idea) but not quite sure what Frodo is describing.

No they shouldn't.

As the future investment will be dealing with the look and environmental issues surrounding the gardens it will not only be a nice place to live but also look nicer too.

Complain - If they have definatly finished work it could well have been a lazy Council workman who only wanted to do half a job.

The problem with the council is they build things that dont really need doing e.g relief ring road through corporation street (which made me redundant) instead of focusing on what really needs doing!

Gobby I know winn gardens isnt one of the nicest estates in sheffield but at the end of the day the people that live there are still human beings they've as much right to have somewhere to live as much as you do.

Thank you Bigphil. Obviously Ms Gobby has issues

It does need building, for two reasons:
Improving congestion and access for all road users.
Kick-starting the regeneration of the Don Riverside and Kelham areas

You only have to see the amount of new buildings going up in the last year on land that has been semi-derelict for decades to see the positive effect it's having.

Everyone has their own bugbear near where they live they wish the council do attend to, but the big projects are just as important, and benefit more people in any case.

Don't know where miss gobby lives except in Hillsboro' but if she took the time to go onto the Middlewood Winners website she might get a shock. They have at the very least got off there backsides and tried to change things.

Oh Frodo I found out what the barriers are. The tenants have had them installed to stop people driving cars onto the football pitches at the bottom.

They are around the whole perimeter of the park.

interestingly a joyrider,(not of the estate :suspect: ) hit one last night trying to do an escape over the fields. :hihi:

Nice sentiment fisherman but the gardens do need tarting up.

We have a new park, the tennis courts have been redone and is now a five aside pitch and basketball court. The tower block has gone! Most of the houses are modernised but the roads and pavements need improving. We could do with more street lighting.

Best bit is that with Beeleywood UDR Ltd doing the claywheels lane project they are going to invest in the estate. Open up the riverbanks and put more jettys there for fishing and the like.

What it probably needs is a nice little bridge over the river so that all the lovely chav's from foxhill can get over to the estate without having to cross that dangerous road.

Oops!!

Just kidding!

Sorry to hear that you were made redundant  but this stretch of the inner ring road is vital, and years overdue.

Winn Gardens as an estate is alright, the problem is the people, as always!!!. I am sure most are fine but they filled the gardens up with more then its fair share of scum bags.

What we need is a dumping ground for all the scum bags, chavs, pikeys and misfits that are destroying our fine city. I mean how much does it cost to transport a load of wasters to some remote island in the middle of nowhere. I dare say a lot cheaper then paying there benefits for the next 50 years!!!

As always in life there are good & bad people (and a whole range inbetween), and these can't just be pigeonholed by the area they live in.

I took my kids down to the playground at Winn Gardens a few weeks ago and was impressed with what had been done.

Somewhat less impressed when a little lad of about 5 or 6 (who was on his with a slightly older lad) says to my 3 year old "don't go near my f***ing ball or I'll f***ing kill ya" :o !! Needless to say he was given a talking to by Mrs Playpen ;) Strangely later on he asked very nicely if he could have a go on one of the kids scooters, we let him but made sure we had the exits covered!

On the way back to the car another lad hanging around near some newly planted trees offered a few words of wisdom "Trees need oxygen don't they?" - as we drove off he took out a flick knife and then hacked the tree!

 bad.

At least you gave him a talking to Mrs Playpen. I am exactly the same with the little darlings, hence I get no trouble and if they mess about in my park or use bad language I'm down on them like a ton of bricks ;)

I'd love to meet the person who decided on the final design choices for the playground.

Why were the Gardens given a prison-esque type enclosure, with a great harsh inner-city ghetto playground feel  which allegedly cost £350k? When, if you cross onto the new estate five minutes up the road and visit their new playground, there is a much kinder design, which has a softer, better feeling about it generally. You cannot say that there would have been a vast cost difference between the two

Why, oh why put a twelve-foot odd metal fence around said play area... to what purpose?!

The playground was developed in consultation with the children who will use it. The high fences were put around

a) Too keep basket balls/footballs where they belong. On the sports court
b) To keep rogue elements out of the playground (dogs ect)

It was decided that rather than have two completely different fences there would be a uniform approach and it is very similar fencing to the previous design that was there before.

The surfacing for the sports court was a huge expense as its low impact flooring as were the surfaces around the play equipment. Plus the floodlights. That is where a huge amount of the budget went

From reading a previous thread the WPV playground is currently un-finished/inaccessible.

That would be this playground then? http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=891098#post891098

Its certainly accessible, and is finished enough to be fully functioning.

I can understand the 'lost balls' reasoning, but the children's play area next to the courts doesn't need to contain balls, surely - and 12' is a little excessive to keep dogs out :hihi: Sufficient to make it look like a prison exercise yard though :loopy:

its still got a fence around it still, so surely people should not be using it.

therefore should be considered un-finished/inaccessible as fox20thc said.

I can promise you it isn't...I visit daily in the vague hope but it has been fenced off and signs up saying not to be accessed, since end August 2005.
