View Full Version : Grrrr baby food
elli_boo_boo 08-03-2004, 09:24 Is it just me or does all baby food taste of paste? I'm trying to feed my 6 month old and struggling to find any food that tastes of food :(
At the moment I'm happy enough to make my own, but when I go back to work I know I'm going to struggle. Has anyone else found nice things to feed their babies or did you just stockpile?
BrainThrust 08-03-2004, 09:28 I actually quite like the (non-existant) taste of baby food, though i haven't eaten in in about 5 years.
One of my old friends who was a professional footballer used to eat it all the time, he said all footballers did.
Anyone know why?
Wilf
What a load of B*****S.!!!
Rusks are brilliant, and cow and gate do the yummiest baby biscuits. Have you tried organic made baby food, perhaps that will have more taste. Or you could just mash up your own veggies and fruit and freeze them for other days if you are going to be short on time when you go back to work. I think there are some pretty good cookbooks for babies nowadays which will probably help.
BrainThrust 08-03-2004, 10:20 One thing that is dangerous concerning making your own aby food, or using processed food not intended for babies is that you should be careful about the salt content.
Feeding a baby too much salt can poison it, it is a common cause of the death of babies.
Please be careful

Good point - I was never told that by the health people, but when my child was a baby someone was in the news because they had given their baby marmite or something and its kidneys packed up.
So long as you dont add anything to the food just keep them pure, the baby will get what it needs.
Has anyone else got vegetarain kids? I have been told that because their bodies have never had to cope with digesting meat they are not weighed down with their digestive systems processes, so they have an abundance of energy. Seems true enough of my daughter but I have no comparison to make to know if it is true.
why are you eating it?? For all you know your baby loves it

Duh, probably about the same age other babies decide to become carnivores.

My now aged almost 7 was weaned as a vegan. He had various allergies and intolerances so it was easier that way. It never did him any harm. He now eats anything, including meat and is happy and healthy.
elli_boo_boo 08-03-2004, 14:08 Thanks - I am mashing veggies like mad at the moment  but it was really a question about stand bys for when I go back to work - I don't like the sound of some of the ingredients in the jars - I was told that the maltodextrin that gets added to loads of baby food is also the stuff they use on envelopes to make them sticky - not sure of the source for this, anyone else heard the same?

yep it is!! Horrible nasty stuff!!
best thing to do is cook in bulk, freeze in ice cube trays and take out as much as you need whenever you need it. You could save and sterilise empty babyfood jars and put the home made stuff into it for when you're out and about.
If you cook and freeze individual veggies and fruits such as carrot, sweet potato or broccolli, you can make what ever combination you want by putting one cube of each in at a time.
These can also be mixed up with plain tofu or cous cous for variety.
Hope that helps.
