I need to buy a computer from either...

Rock
Dell
Alienware

I was thinking of getting a laptop, but now thinking of the possiblity of a desktop.

I need it for

3d
video editing
music
graphic design
and other general pc use

Peoples views on specs would be great!

Id advise you to stay clear of DELL computers

why do you NEED to only buy one fomr those certain places?

for what you want MOST average PC's im sure will handle fine

RAm would probably be the main factor, so atleast 1GB of anything over about 2700 maybe 3200 would be good...also a decent sized HDD for the multimedia kinds of work you will be doing

my spec is 2.8GHZ CPU
ATI radeon 9800 pro
280GB HDD
1024MB 2700 RAM

and i play games and do lots of photo manipulation work using photoshop and everything runs fine and dandy :D

Those places i listed do a buy in 2007 intrest free.

I have 3k to spend, but would like to get a video camera in that price, but not essential

Don't get a Dell.

You would be as good to get a 2k loan or interest free credit card and making up a decent computer yourself, or getting someone else to build it for you, rather than an overpriced prebuilt one that has a fancy case... You would probably still save money with the limited interest on a bank loan because of the saving you would make on the actual computer.

£3K :o

i was thinking more about less than a grand for the PC LOL

if you have to buy one pre-built from one of these places, then alienware build decent pc's, with good components, but they're bloody expensive

Alienware was my preference, just didn't want to think i was buying a 1k PC in a 2k case :(

If you can get credit for a finance agreement then you should be able to get a loan.. Personally think that their machines are overpriced but if you have no other way of getting one then go with the Alienware..

Thoes things are way overpriced, they are made for kids with rich parents who dont know much about computers. Have a look at purpouse built creative workstations. Im not sure about getting finance with thoes companies tho.

only problem is if you weant to replace something or add something to your PC you cant just go to a PC shop and buy one...you have to order it from dell...and the prices are usually stupid

yep, dells can be funny machines with regards to what you can use for upgrades, i'd avoid at all costs.

have a look at verypc or whatever its called in hilsborough, im sure they will build you a custom pc, and it will be much cheaper than alienwares

alienware

Overrated and overpriced....imho

Good machines but paying for the *trendy name*

Rock do make solid laptops and are imho one of the best for gaming....if you must use one for gaming

Dell....op have already said what i was going to say....avoid

Try a Gateway computer at Comet. It is £549 in their shop or £499 on internet. You just need to buy a flat screen separately, no point spending £3000 on one, save the rest for a nice exotic holiday!!!

imho would be lacking in spec for the intended use,but at the other end there's no need to touch 3grand for a machine to achieve what Lickable requires.

Have you looked at it? It looks quite a powerful machine for the money.

Most certaily wouldnt dispute that it is good value spec for the money, the biggest let down been the shared ghraphcs, upto 224Mb of the ram and merely suitable for basic tasks.
Dedicated would be a far better option which is also faster.
The Gateway brand wasn't upto much quality wise first time round,on par with a Tiny built pc........from the outside a good spec pc....on the inside,a different story.

I'm with Neeek on this... Buying from a company that is offering interest free credit is just plain nuts...

Far better to work out what your specification requirements are then look at the different options... build, buy or restore (to quote the whole property market programmes).

There are companies that offer specifications specifically aimed at your needs which are not mainstream that you could find using Google but it's unlikely they'll offer the credit terms you want.

Anyway, as Neeeeek said, look at other ways to fund your buy, it'll pay you in the long run.

Dont go for an interest free loan either. It will cost you a lot of money if you cant pay in full at the end of the interest free period. I think it is far wiser to buy it on your credit card which also gives you protection with your credit card company under the consumer credit act if the supplier goes belly up.

You may also try Ergo Computing but I have found them very slow replying to my pre-sales queries so by the time they do reply things have changed and I'm therefore never sure where I stand www.ergo.co.uk. Also there are no prices on their website.
