View Full Version : How can I get Fit without joining a gym?

I really really don't want to join a gym. I wouldn't have time to go and couldn't commit to the treadmill several times a week.

I wouldn't mind doing the odd aerobics class. Does anyone know of anywhere around the city centre (pref. the Ecclesall Rd side of town) which offers just aerobics without a huge membership fee?

Alternatively, can anyone suggest an alternative fitness method that doesn't require a huge financial outlay up front eg membership fees or the purchase of pricey equipment?

Get yourself some walking boots and go walking, it's free, easy and a very pleasant way to get fit.

Or just buy a pair of running shoes.

There's enough hills in the city to keep anyone fit :)

Power Walking is the craze
its better than jogging as it doesnt jolt your joints as much.

Anything that gets your heart beating is good for the cardio system and will burn a few calories

I'm not really the person to advise, being built more for comfort rather than speed, but try swimming. It is supposed to be the best all round exercise you can get, with no high impact stuff to worry about. I must say walking sounds more tempting though.

I'd much rather run than walk, especially power walking - that justdoesn't appeal to me, if I walk I prefer to walk to relax.

Ever thought about Martial Arts as a way to fitness?

I teach Traditional Karate in the City Centre near to the Forum.

Karate - yike! I did this for about two years, and a nastily sprained ankle and a broken nose later, I decided it wasn't for me.

Walking - not a bad idea, I do a fair bit of this anyway.

Any more ideas?

Crookes Working Mens club has aerobics on Monday nights, I know a couple of people that go. I couldn't tell you how much it is though but it can't be much.

Buy an exercise video and do that! (make sure you shut your curtins though or the neighbours will think you've flipped)

I have an old Rosemary Connely one I found a while back. Used to do an hour a day, gets the weight off pronto. :)

Whatever you do dont get Nell McAndrews.

It tires you out so much you ache the next day til you get used to it which takes at least 2 months and you end up actually putting weight on cos muscles begin to form. As soon as i felt biceps beginning to form in my arms i stopped it and replaced it with my old routine which works without turning you into a pit bull terrier.

This is as follows:
As many sit ups as you can be arsed to do (it increases with time from about 10 to hundreds- im at about 250)

followed by as many squats as you can be arsed to do for a long as you can be bothered to do them (i find 40-50 suffices)

followed by 30 leg ups each leg.

Arms are kept toned by a kind of situp you can do where you pull yourself up. I dont do many of these cos i like my arms to be softer so i can hug nicely.

If you want to tone up the behind do 20-30 leg rolls (laying on stomach, lifting leg up about 45degrees and making circle motions)

Beware of periods when you fail to stick to this as weight goes back on very quickly (over my 2 week exam period with no routine i put back on 10lbs)

I go to hillsborough leisure centre. I'm signed up to this unlimited fitness thing. It's actually very good, you can use hillsborough, ponds forge, don valley and concorde.

Your membership means you get to use the gym, do classes and go swimming. It's £20 per month off peak, or £26 per month for unlimited use.

Apparently swimming is the best form of exercise you can do. Use all your muscles and what have yer.

try the JKD bigginners session at the source at meadowhall, you will not get hurt, very good for CV work, go at your own pace and inspires motivation in you and your partner

Mon 7 - 915 Bginners 7-745
Wed 7-830
Thurs 7-915 Beginners 7-745

walking is good for you, but at time motivation is the biggest killer in keeping fit.
i am rubbish at the gym thing, hate all that treadmill thing, i get bored, and there is always something new at the class to learn.

I'm with Caprice on this one. Exercise videos are where it's at.

Mine are legendary. We'd get a few people round, stock up on tubs of Haagen daazs ice cream, plenty of hot chocolate, get an exercise video and and sit and criticize the leotards all afternoon!

How painless is that??

Mmmm, feel that burn! (of the hot chocolate hitting those lips)

:)

i learnt this from a personal trainer i got talkin to in the gym a few months back.
Sit ups are good for core strength but if u are doing them to acheive some sort of 6 pack or definition then it will only work if you have got a certain percent of body fat. Not sure wat percent but i will find out.

So basically if you have a bit of weight to lose and u want a defined stomach whether ur male or female then just stick to any sort of cardio. No point otherwise :)

eat less and exercise...

Thats the basis of all dieting and getting fit.
If you just want to get fit, walk places that you might usually drive to or, one i reccomend- cycle - one less car off the road, you helping youself and the environment ;)
