In the early 60s as a hip young Tup one of my favourite haunts was The Locarno,it really was the place to go,it was always full of teenagers who loved to dance.Starting with the Teddie boy era, drape coats, drainpipes, crepe beetle crushers, then onto Italian 3 button jackets, winklepicker shoes, then the style favoured by the Kray twins!.We would work our way down The Moor calling at a few pubs first, then to the Locarno. At that time the pubs shut at 10pm but in the Locarno there was the Gallery bar,the only place in Sheffield open until 1-00 pm,needless to say you couldn,t swing a cat,we loved it spending many a happy hour there. One night I got in my Standard Vanguard outside and set off,it jammed in 1st gear,I drove it all the way to Owlerton stuck in gear, never saw a police car all the way, very lucky, very stupid!.Anyone out there remember those times?.:roll::D:D

The barman was a short bald guy called Lol Buxton.

And none of us saw the real Art Deco frontage, until now.

I used to go in, when it was Tiffany's, in my misspent youth and done out like a south-sea island with palms and fishing nets. At that time, the upstairs restaurant was called "Tree Tops".

When I was young in the early 1960's, when you were 16 or 17 on Saturday nights most people went to the City Hall dances which were good with arguably the best dance floor in Sheffield. After a couple of years you "graduated" to the Locarno which was really good with a great band & singers. In those days dancing finished at midnight so everyone could get the last buses home at 12.30 am. Special nights were held on Boxing Day which you had to buy a ticket in advance for & these finished later (unless Boxing Day was on a Sunday in which case it had to finish earlier according to the Licensing laws of the time).

Used to go to the Locarno occasionally early 60's. No car then so had to get the last 88 to Fulwood. Remember buying beers there so must have found the bar ok. Used to go Saturday nights in 1971 when it was Tiffanys.

I remember the first time I went to the Locarno, it was a thursday night and I managed to get past the doorman even though I was only 15 , I 'borrowed' my sisters dirndl skirt and her little white blouse, she was home before me that night and we had a full on strop when she saw what I was wearing. I thought the Locarno was magical, loved the ladies room with the wall of mirrors. I tried the City Hall dances but never wanted Ballroom Dancing just loved to 'bop', so Thursday and Sundays at the Locarno, Saturday at Club 60 and a couple of nights at the grotty Roxy Page Hall became the highlights of my week.

On the opening night of the renamed Tiffany's someone released two Budgies which flew around all night can anyone remember the concrete ashtrays full of sand which looked like birdbaths and were handed down from the Locarno days also lasted through all the different owners back to the name Locarno again  .
