View Full Version : Best way to deal with trolls
Fishcake 28-06-2011, 11:55 I have noticed that there seem to be a lot of trolls here lately (not you tro11). They seem intent on casuing arguments and not debating anything but repeating themselves over and over. So should we ignore them and hope they go away or should we ridicule them and mock them for their stupidity?
I know we have some people here who genuinely hate all things Islam but at least they try to argue their belief, but we have a number now who just like to shout a load of hate filled nonsense. So what to do? Ignore or laugh at and ridicule them?

yes i do, its the best way.
I thought it was a banable offence to be a troll on here. There does seem a few of them so I guess the Moderators think it's ok for them to be on the forum
I add them to my 'ignore list' - it's surprising how quickly you get though reading a thread when half the posts are blanked out :D
I have most of the well known trolls on ignore on here, but for some bizarre reason I still look at their posts sometimes.

thats a good idea

Having a conflicting opinion isn't trolling.
Bear in mind we also have to be indifferent to the content hence why some posts may not be actioned in the manner some people imagine they should.

i find calling someone a troll is the first option of a poor debater, normally with a year plus on a site. Then its the other slurs like racist nazi etc. Liberals really know how to hate and bully.

Hello Mr Pot. Meet Mr Kettle
I have a few on ignore but mostly i have learnt to just skim past their posts. If you bite you are just giving them what they want. I agree about the repetition though. Some people just say the same thing over and over.

Since you're not a fan of labelling, why are you labelling others?

Actually being a troll is the first option of a poor debater.

well i guess your the expert, so ill bow to your power to make things up as you see fit:)

im taking part in a debate, whatare you doing? sulking about the last time we debated?

And there we have the first accusation of dishonesty and a personal insult.
That's what gets threads closed.
I'm entitled to my opinion and it's just as likely to be true as any of yours are.
The only downside to the ignore list is that you can still see posts when quoted by other people. I can't help but peek....
I know. WHY do they do that? It's really irritating.
If you've blocked someone, just get rid of their posts entirely.

Totally agree Fc, this new wave of enfants terribles aren't fit to tie the shoe laces of the proper Nastyboys of yore...bartfarst, wolfstalin, mr_contrite, upholsterer etc must be frustrated they can't form the Nazi salute from their graves :hihi:
Ignore or laugh at and ridicule them?
I use all three depending on the content of the post (a method I use on every thread/post I read).

You are, but your a mod so the power balance is yours. even if you do nothing. one of your junior mods could punish me for taking you on in a debate. i guess if im suspended soon ill know im right:roll:
whats the point in a fourm if you all want the same opinion? a general question.

The problem is most trolls tend to have 'new' accounts usually accompanied with high post rate

Worry not mark I am, you'd be unable to threaten Mickey Mouse in a debate, so it's doubtful you'd trouble anyone here.

BF Loving your response.
There are some trolls on here but not as many as some people think. Just because someone has a different opinion it doesn't make them a troll. Even if they have a stupid opinion, that just makes them stupid! There is plenty of that on here.
A troll left a really nasty and hurtful comment on my terminally ill daughters holiday snaps on youtube.Don't know why they get a kick out of being so sick. They need help.
Youtube is based in the US, they have "free speech" hence no Mods, so idiots can say what they want on there with no fear of reprisals.

Its possible but its way harder to get a new IP

One of the best ways of dealing with trolling that I've seen on here is to 'fight fire with fire'. Basically a troll started a thread in the hope of causing dissent, and instead of falling into the trap other posters just derailed it by writing irrelevant posts.
I would make a link but I know how seriously the mods view the accusation of trolling!
You are, but your a mod so the power balance is yours. even if you do nothing. one of your junior mods could punish me for taking you on in a debate. i guess if im suspended soon ill know im right:roll:

The purpose of a forum is to debate and discuss.
I'm all for different opinions the world would be a miserable place otherwise.
If you get suspended it's for breaking forum rules, which you've even managed to do in this thread, and this isn't even a volatile subject.

Hmm, an interesting perspective, perhaps you're right..but don't ever be tempted to take a bite from the Moon, cheese can give you nightmares ;)
rickiethecat 28-06-2011, 12:23 It's ironic that a number of posters on this thread as well as the thread starter fit the troll description! Some posters seem to have no self awareness.
SnailyBoy 28-06-2011, 12:23 Plus the same IP address? yes?
Unless they've faked an IP adress, yes?
mark I am 28-06-2011, 12:24 unless they've faked an ip adress, yes?
that would take skill, yes? I thought trolls were thick.
Fishcake 28-06-2011, 12:24 whats the point in a fourm if you all want the same opinion? a general question.
I would hate the same opinion from everyone, it would be dull. It isn't always what you say but how you say it (not you personally, just in general).
You could say "I hate foreigners, look at this youtube clip made by a xenophobe"
or you could say
" I think there is a problem with immigration and too many criminals are coming in. I also think that too many immigrants claim benefit compared to working legally."
The first will get you no where as you sound bonkers barmy. the second is at least the starting point for debate, where people can ask you why and how you support or came to those conclusions.
btw the examples are not my thinking, just examples.
mark I am 28-06-2011, 12:26 Hmm, an interesting perspective, perhaps you're right..but don't ever be tempted to take a bite from the Moon, cheese can give you nightmares ;)
Dont sulk you may win the next one:roll:
I haven`t really seen any. With 50,000+ members you`re going to get some conflict of opinion and people get called troll because someone disagrees with them and its an easy word to band around.
Can`t say Ive seen anything malicious. Cant say they Im that bothered either.

Thick, slightly.

Unplugging a router for a while takes skill?

I'm sure other posters don't want to know about your obsession but a few weeks ago you derailed a thread I started about staffy attacks on kids and for the next few days every post I made was followed by you making some smartass sarcastic comment, regardless of the thread. It was only when I reported you to the mods and you got a ban that it stopped.
0742Sheff 28-06-2011, 12:33 Really is it that simple? I thought your IP was fixed.
Well, for a lot of people it works yes. There are other ways and means of forcing an IP change but I'm certainly not going in to that detail on a thread discussing trolling.

:hihi::hihi:fair enough, i thought you had to pay for software or get a new provider. anyway ive just figured out wifi.:hihi:
Why should anyone want to change an ip or user name?
Isn't that like been thrown out of the cinema for being naughty and trying to sneak back in.

I know we don't discuss bans here but I wasn't banned. Not sure why you thought that. I wasn't trolling, I was using humour to highlight the flaws in your argument back then. It was clearly lost on you as you are still unhappy about it.
I wasn't following you around rickie, trust me, but when I see something that is so ridiculous I like to use humour within my posts, which many people PM me about and not to complain.
I was probably commenting on what you said for a very good reason.

True, but there has been quite a few trolls over the last couple of weeks who've been exiled, and come back the same day under a new alias, but we (and you) know it's them again...

Trolls get a kick out of that sort of thing though. They get banned and are sad enough to come straight back under a different name. It must be a pretty sad existence if the highlight of your day is creating multiple accounts with the sole reason of trying to provoke reactions from faceless strangers on the internet.
Youtube is based in the US, they have "free speech"
So does the UK, it's only certain sites that don't.

As they can (and do) on here.
As mentioned above, Idiot != troll.
Its possible but its way harder to get a new IP
No it's not.
Even cable IP's are dynamic, let alone ADSL. All you have to do is release your IP and wait for it's lease to expire (leaving the modem off for a couple of days is often a good way to release it).
If you get suspended it's for breaking forum rules
To be fair though, the rules are pretty ambiguous in their wording, so it's really rather easy to be banned.
invariably they eventually reveal themselves
You can usually tell within a couple of days (couple of posts for some) when they have "recently joined" and have something like 132 posts within a very short period of time and only on specific topics.
