This is mad, as no one ever been to Bradford, London, etc, etc. Whats your thoughts please. I dont belive it.:loopy: Rentaknight 04-01-2006, 02:49 Source would be lovely.. LOL SHEFFIELD VOTED CITY WITH THE BEST MAGPIES EVER LOL OMG OFFICIAL VOTE All very well isn't it, but where did you read this ? Strix 04-01-2006, 02:53 Well I've never come across any other town that treats fly tipping as some sort of anti-establishment militant statement before  I've never come across anywhere else where so many people describe a green field as 'wasteground' and happily sling all their garden rubbish and used furniture on it. And just dont get me started on pi$$ing in the street  Sheffield just has no idea of what it could be :shakes: Don_Kiddick 04-01-2006, 05:26 Magpies, being vermin (rats with wings*), must reflect the levels of filth available for them to thrive so... Shirley? ** What do you call a dog with wings? Linda McCartney :hihi: youwhatref 04-01-2006, 05:40 Do we have a link of this as i've not read this anywhere? Unless the people had been to several sauna's on Attercliffe Road and that's what they mean! You have forgotten to mention the underlying cause though, The people of Sheffield. Any visitors to Sheffield are greeted by litter flying from the banches of trees, dirty 3rd world roads and countryside that looks like a rubbish tip. The Authorities should impose a spot fine of £500 to litter bugs be they adults or children, That would soon sort out the problem. LBoogie 04-01-2006, 07:08 Voted by who? Where did you read this? and..seriously, you people do love to moan. exmrbd 04-01-2006, 08:59 Sheffield is very clean along side other city's , however the same few spots let the place down , The Markets & Arundel Gate underpass. cgksheff 04-01-2006, 09:20 I don't know what the original poster is referring to, but the last survey from the Keep Britain Tidy campaign ( here (http://www.encams.org/general/leqse0405.asp) ) does have Yorkshire & The Humber as the worst region outside of London. Only London and this region were below the national average. christoff 04-01-2006, 09:20 Yeah, where did this 'fact' come from exactly?? Obviously any city has what you could call 'dirty' or run-down areas. But the mind does wonder given the fact Sheffield has way and above more green parkland than most other cities in the country. Not to mention more trees per person than any other city in Europe!!! Greybeard 04-01-2006, 09:34 Originally posted by cgksheff I don't know what the original poster is referring to, but the last survey from the Keep Britain Tidy campaign ( here (http://www.encams.org/general/leqse0405.asp) ) does have Yorkshire & The Humber as the worst region outside of London. Only London and this region were below the national average. and quoting from that report... "The fact that 91% of the litter we found had just been dropped by pedestrians shows that it is no good pointing fingers at councils, government and other people - it's a lack of individual responsibility that has created this mess and it must stop." But it's not pedestrians in this area, - the roadside verges are becoming an eyesore and it's from people out on a spin in the country just tossing their rubbish out the car window. Why can't they stuff their empty cans/bottles/crisp packets in a carrier bag and take it home with them :loopy: I'd say the problem has arisen only over the last two years or so perhaps the Peak Park authorities need to get some notices up urging folk to take their litter home. GazB 04-01-2006, 09:37 I can't speak for the cities I haven't seen, but Wakefield is certainly much more dirty than Sheffield. DancingDave 04-01-2006, 10:13 I would observe that there may be a low level of litter, rubbish etc dropped by a few uncaring pedestrians, but what makes them inclined to do so ? is it the fact that the roads are so rough and in such poor condition that it makes people feel like they are in a war torn Eastern European place, so they don't care ? is it the absolutely ghastly monstrosities that the council have allowed to be "erected" in the peace gardens ? are these any improvement over the "egg box" ? Have you seen the Graffiti in Ranmoor, next to the Bulls Head ? this is supposed to be one of Sheffield's best areas, but the council flatly refuse to come and clean it off, lending the area a bronx like atmosphere. So come on Council / streetforce whatever it is this week.... Lead by example, give us a decent city and we'll keep it that way. If you give us roads fit to drive on, pavements fit for a 21st century city, buses that we can afford to use instead of this ridiculous rip off. Then people will start to appreciate the city that we have, and look after it. Lea1979 04-01-2006, 11:13 as I walked to work this morning I saw some council guys in the middle of a 'Chewing Gum Cleaning Operation' around the Peace Gardens. Brought the flags up lovely it did :) defstef 04-01-2006, 11:32 This (probably non-existent, or at least highly dubious) poll is a load of tosh. To what area(s) of the city are they referring? It's not like Fargate or the Peace Gardens are drowning in seas of refuse, even Castle Market is less scruffy than Leeds market. Poorer areas of town are at least matched in scruffiness in serveral other cities, and we have acres of beautiful (usually litter-free) parkland. I think we all need to have the source for this, Jaytee, as I can't even believe anyone has actually said this, let alone be bothered to debate it. On the subject of graffiti, love the fact that the streetforce bozos got rid of loads of inspired images that actually brightened up areas but left up all the ones that say "your mum is a s**g", most likely because they are all illiterate. However, it is possible that Sheffield is the dirtiest city due to soil-bound pollutants and contaminants from heavy industry. I know for a fact that the Rother has one of the highest concentrations of mercury in Europe. If that is the case, then no matter how 'tidy' Shef looks, it can't be classed as clean. Saying that though, the Cumbria countryside is highly polluted from Sellafield. It's also difficult to know which pollutants are man-made and which are natural. Devon has areas with high radioactivity for instance through natural radon, though nobody would dispute it is beautiful. Just like Shef is beautiful! cazzak 04-01-2006, 13:57 How can Sheffield be Dirtiest City - Shocking 40summat 04-01-2006, 14:10 Over the years i have worked away in many towns and cities and in no way is Sheffield the dirtiest, infact it would'nt even come in my top 20. Perhaps the OP has found an old article from Sheffields past industrial days. People would always mention the smoke and grime when writing about Sheffield, and i would emagine most of them would have never been here. It is not spotless but considering the fast food outlets around it never will be. Nimrod 04-01-2006, 14:25 Rotherham seems to be cleaner than Sheffield, less gafitti and litter lying around the center. They even have street cleaners in the center on weekends. Clifton Park is immaculate, not like our litter strewn, dog muck covered parks in Sheffield. Top marks Rotherham    Mathom 04-01-2006, 16:19 There are dirtier cities than Sheffield - Liverpool and London are notably much filthier places, but Sheffield does seem to be getting grubbier. It's the only city where I've seen used johnnies in the main shopping streets (watch out on Fargate) :gag: and the market precinct is utterly disgusting. The amount of gob on the streets is also disgusting. It's also a city where some people are vile enough to go to the toilet out of doors - and I mean number twos (those nasty locations have been: subway on St Marys, Odeon carpark, Pond street, Market galleries, Bramall Lane, The Moor) :gag: As for litter, there are far worse places, but certain streets are vile, notably Shoreham Street and Cemetery Road where it seems there's a problem with bin-tipping by some of the students. I've noticed an increase in carrier bags in tree branches though lately. Maybe that could be Sheffield's new civic emblem instead of a flag? A Forlorn and faded Netto bag hanging from the top branches of a beech sapling? :( Little_Alex 04-01-2006, 16:43 I travel all over the country watching my footie team and believe me there are some right s***holes. Could it be a reference to Mr Blunketts sexual appetite ? Jaytee 04-01-2006, 17:19 It could well be Alex,,but i do agree in some respects what matham has said. Every town and city has its problems with cleanliness but you walk up my road after a match day and see all the litter people drop its just lazy and disgusting. I went to town today and it looks disgusting, the dregs of society that just drop their litter where they like. Also when was the last time anyone saw the lorrys that picked up all the kak from the gutter. I love my city but come on its just a disgrace if we are honest, the litter i mean. You go to germany and its really clean.:) koritsi 04-01-2006, 19:14 Last time I was in Sheffield city centre it reminded me of East Berlin circa 1979 :( Ditz 04-01-2006, 19:21 Sheffield is the dirtiest city? how can it be? its only got 2 sex shops in it! ooooo get us matron!!! hehehe ormester 05-01-2006, 23:50 sheffield is a dump went to cardiff and could believe how much cleaner the city is mega_monty 05-01-2006, 23:55 Originally posted by Mathom I've noticed an increase in carrier bags in tree branches though lately. No we've just got a wind problem, lots of it. Delboy3 06-01-2006, 05:35 Originally posted by mega_monty No we've just got a wind problem, lots of it. That is an excuse for the amount of bags and rubbish flying about? I spent a bit of the Chritmas period in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. Whilst there I didn't see one bag in a tree nor was there any litter to be seen on the roadside. People there have been bought up to throw their litter in a bin unlike here in the UK where the education of people regarding rubbish seems to be lacking. Sheffield is not the only city that can be classed as dirty in this respect, the whole of the UK is a rubbish tip. To give credit where it is due, Liverpool is making steps to clean itself up. I visit the city every few months, and the city centre has improved noticably over the past decade. Gone is the 'Festival of Litter' (ho ho, thank you Bill Bryson), replaced by a G-Litter (http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/News/newsdetail_0255.asp) Festival instead. Well done Mike Storey (http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/News/City_leaders/index.asp), Lib Dem leader of Liverpool City Council. We really could do with having him in charge of Sheffield. Sheffield is not the only city that can be classed as dirty in this respect, the whole of the UK is a rubbish tip. Going back to mega_monty's point, Sheffield is *really* *really* windy. It's quite possible, Mathom, that while some of the 'tipped-over' bins are the work of students, a lot of them are just caused by wind. I used to have a flat on Abbeydale Road and my bin was forever being blown over by some freak gale. Curiously, Noel Edmund's bizarre spearheading of the NIMBY-esque campaign against wind farms in the UK used the example of schemes in Germany that had suffered from unreliable wind. But Germany, the lowlands etc. are much flatter than old Hallamshire, and there is less wind, hence Delboy's experience of no LIDL bags in the trees. The solution: surround Shef with windfarms, and have two massive sails on the cooling towers near meadowhell. This could supply the city's energy, cementing it's reputation as the greenest city in the north, whilst simultaneously removing some kinetic energy from passing gusts, reducing the preponderance of tree-bound carriers and fallen over bins. And the need for quite so much hairspray. 42thefloor 06-01-2006, 13:12 hmmm was pretty shocked before i remembered seeing a guy taking a slash next to a bin at the top of the moor at 3 on a saturday afternoon, i'm not saying it's the dirtiest city but it has it's moments... |
