View Full Version : Would you eat a Cat or a Dog?

I ask this question because who/what was it that drew the line between what is "PET" and what is "FOOD"?

Don_Kiddick

Yes I would.

Some people keep fish, pigs, horses, chickens etc as pets while others gorge on their corpses.

Hmm, I don't know. I've got three cats and a dog and while I don't usually let things like that bother me, I might have trouble with this one. Be a bit like cannibalism somehow.

Certainly would, and if the reports about why one of the take-aways back in Liverpool are to believed, i probably have! ;)

At the end of the day, meat is meat, and I am willing to try anything once.

on a filming trip to korea in 2001 i attended a rather important ceremonial dinner laid on by relatives of the guy i was woking for,the entree consisted of a dish containing boiled dog.
i ate a little of everything i was offered but cant say (as a vegetarian) i enjoyed it.similar taste and texture to lamb.
but then i find the idea of keeping an animal as an object far more repulsive than eating one!

An object?

Brude is far from being an object :suspect:

He's a friend, a surrogate child, a neighbourhood watch member (unofficially, but we don't get any choice about it :suspect: ), a warm fuzzy little tyke with a personality to contradict (or to match depending on what day it is  ).

Or did you mean the people who keep ornamental birds or fish?

Personally I wouldn't.

Food is a strange thing though. A lot of countries think eating offal is foul (and who can blame them, after all it is the "waste" parts"), but "we" tuck into kidney, liver etc. Some people would see that as foul as eating monkey brains (a delicacy in china).

I've always had a fasination with the stereotypical view of the French diet: Frogs legs and escargot, in some ways I'd love to try them but I'm to repulsed by the idea.

I must admit to being far more into "foreign" food than English stuff though. I'd take a curry, chinese, thai, pizza/pasta or paella over Sunday roast any day of the week (even Sunday).

think about it eating a cat or dog is like tertiary nutrition ie
grass gets eaten by rabbit dog eats rabbit human eats dog.
im sure during gcse biology we wer taught this is bad for you hence we normally only eat herbivores.
so i wouold stick to my cows pigs chickens and ducks and the very occasional lamb.

Don_Kiddick
04-01-2006, 05:29
but they feed ground up creatures to herbivores anyway in the form of high calorie high protein pellets - AND inject them full of steroids & antibiotics to stop them becoming sick...

Therefore tertiary nutrition is unavoidable

Soylent Green I tell you! :suspect:

I'd eat any kind of meat I think.
Eating dogs/cats is no more weird than eating cows or lambs. I did see a program where they were eating guinie pigs, and they looked delicious.

I'm sorry but Pigs will eat absolutely anything. It has been known for murderers to dispose of bodies by putting them into a pig sty, they eat the bones and everything.

I also knew someone who kept chickens once and they gave them all the dinner scraps and they also ate everything.

Judging by the state of your spelling in your posting, biology probably wasn't the only subject where you failed to pay attention to the teacher.

look at the time of the post i was half asleep, yes you're right pigs will eat any thing, but is the stuff the farmer feeds them on some sort of pellet made from veg stuff?.
I also never said it was the definate truth, just that i thought that we were told that at school.

PET RECIPIES

Catatouille

Ingredients
1 Roadkill Moggie (as fresh as possible)
1/2 pound zucchini, scrubbed, and sliced into 1/8-inch slices
1/2 pound eggplant, scrubbed, and sliced into thin (3/8-inch) slices, about 4-inches by 1-inch
3 T. olive oil
1/2 pound thinly sliced yellow onions
1 sliced green bell pepper
2 cloves mashed garlic
1 pound ripe tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and juiced
3 T. parsley
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray two cookie sheets with olive oil or another vegetable oil spray. Put the zucchini and eggplant slices on the cookie sheets. Brush very lightly with olive oil, and bake until slightly brown on each side. In a skillet, cook onions and peppers slowly in 2 T. olive oil for about 10 minutes. Stir in garlic, and season to taste. Slice tomato pulp into 3/8-inch strips. Place tomato slices over onions and peppers. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the skillet and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Uncover, baste with the tomato juices, raise heat, and boil for several minutes, until most of the juice has evaporated. Put 1/3 of tomato mixture in the bottom of a casserole. Sprinkle with 1 T. parsley. Arrange 1/2 of the eggplant and zucchini on top, then half of the remaining tomatoes and parsley. Put the rest of the eggplant and zucchini, and finish with the remaining tomatoes and parsley. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Correct seasoning. Raise heat for 15 minutes, basting if dry. Serve cold, warm, or hot poured over Microwaved Roadkill Tiddles .

Back to the original point of this thread, yes I would certainly eat cat or dog. Obviously not someone's beloved pets, but tender young ones which are bred for "good eating".
I have eaten pheasent, veal, horse, rabbit chicken etc. If I was in a far easten country I would happily eat spiders, worms or whatever the local grub! is.

Why stop at the neighbourhood cats. I found this dog recipe with a bit of Googling! Wonder though if certain breeds are tastier than others?

Stewed Dog (wedding style)

Serving Size : 30 Preparation Time :3:00
Categories : Ethnic
Philippines

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
3 kg dog meat -- * see note
1 1/2 cups vinegar
60 peppercorns -- crushed
6 tablespoons salt
12 cloves garlic -- crushed
1/2 cup cooking oil
6 cups onion -- sliced
3 cups tomato sauce
10 cups boiling water
6 cups red pepper -- cut into strips
6 pieces bay leaf
1 teaspoon tabasco sauce
1 1/2 cups liver spread -- ** see note
1 whole fresh pineapple -- cut 1/2 inch thick

1. First, kill a medium sized dog, then burn off the fur over a hot fire.
2. Carefully remove the skin while still warm and set aside for later (may be
used in other recpies)
3. Cut meat into 1" cubes. Marinade meat in mixture of vinegar,
peppercorn, salt and garlic for 2 hours.
4. Fry meat in oil using a large wok over an open fire, then add onions and
chopped pineapple and suate until tender.
5. Pour in tomato sauce and boiling water, add green peper, bay leaf and
tobasco.
6. Cover and simmer over warm coals until meat is tender. Blend in liver spread
and cook for additional 5-7 minutes.

* you can substiture lamb for dog. The taste is similar, but not as pungent.
** smooth liver pate will do as well.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Suggested Wine: San Miguel Beer
Serving Ideas : Rice, naturally.

For the faint of heart, you can always substitute lamb in place of next door's
rover, but the meat will not be as sweet or as rich in flavor.

Ok sorry for that I didn't realise. I am on my 8th can of guinness..

I would imagine a good dog for eating would be something like one of those horrible muscle dogs as there would be lots of lean meat on them. Maybe a Rottweiler, a Dobermann or one of those chav dogs {staffy}

In my carnivorous days I ate some weird beasts. I'm not gonna list 'em, but a friend I lived with, a butcher, dispatched his sister's cat after an argument and fed it to her in a stew.

It made me think about what we eat, and I might have tried it, or even dog, but now the only meat I touch ... is live! :heyhey:

But deffo not a human.

Is it not true that Cows/Lambs/Chickens have been human bred for years and years, and all that Darwin/Natural Selection crap has been human controlled?

As in, Athletic slim cow wouldnt be all that tasty would it?

Cows/Sheep etc aren't exactly the smartest of creatures. Maybe they once were :suspect:
Dogs and cats are too smart to eat - too high up the food chain.

No thought has gone into this post by the way, its purely a rant.

Don Note: Challenge taken

Instead of using a roadkill Tiddles, take one Bull Mastiff
(They're bigger & therefore will feed a bigger Chinese family).

Feed it copious amounts of melted Cadburies Milk Chocolate Buttons to fatten it up, chocolate being toxic to dogs.
Eventually it will die happily full of choccy, the meat being sweeter for the gluttony.

Prepare as before using roasting guide applied to turkeys

Or a rodent turd or two?

HEALTH inspectors closed down a balti house after finding it was "seriously infested" with mice.
Rotherham Magistrates' Court heard that emergency powers were used to close Imrans Balti, on High Street, Maltby, after an inspection on December 21.
Council environmental health officer, Alan Pogorzelec, said that he visited the restaurant following information from a pest control operative that pests were active.
"I found evidence of serious infestation of mice," he said.
The court heard that mice droppings, smear marks on the skirting boards and walls—which indicate a rodent brushing past—and gnawed and chewed electrical cables were found.
Mr Pogorzelec decided on the spot that the premises posed an "imminent risk to health" and served an Emergency Prohibition Notice on the restaurant.
The premises were closed while cleaning and pest control was carried out. It reopened on December 31 when environmental health officers gave the green light.
Proprietor, Sardar Khan, who appeared in court, but was not represented, said that he had no idea about the infestation, and was ordered to pay £701 costs.
Magistrates also served a Declaration of Satisfaction, indicating they were satisfied that the necessary health and safety measures had been carried out.

Well, I wouldn't eat any animal because I'm a vegetarian. :D

But to be honest, I really don't understand why meat-eaters differentiate between a cute cuddly dog and a big ugly cow - at the end of the day death is always death. Not quite sure how you can say: "I won't eat that because it's cute, but I will eat that because it's ugly!" :loopy:

In fact - if I were to eat meat I'd much rather eat something that looks good, rather than putting a piece of something ugly and smelly like a pig in my mouth! I don't know how you people eat pigs - they're 'orrible! :gag:

I'm not one of these veggies who preaches to people unless asked. But since I've been asked I will say that one of my pet hates is a meat-eater in denial. These people who "oooh" and "ahhhh" over little fluffy kittens and then think nothing of going out and buying a pack of lamb chops, just because it's neatly packaged and doesn't really resemble the animal that it came from. Carnivores need to face facts and face up to what it is they're eating instead of just letting Tescos make it all sterile and pretty for them.
