View Full Version : Kickboxing at Ecclesall Road trinity church
squidge00 03-01-2006, 19:09 I have just come back from a fantastic aerobics session at this church and feel invigorated enough to consider taking up another sport.
In the church, they have posters for kick boxing on a wednesday and thursday night - does anybody else go and if so, can you tell me the hours and the rate of pay?
Freddylee 03-01-2006, 23:07 No idea
but there is a VERY GOOD kickboxing club that train at sport hallam (broomgrove road) off ecclesall road on tuesdays and thursdays at 730pm
They are possibly THE BEST in the area.

kickboxing on BroomGrove Road
Sport Hallam gym
Tuesday & Thursday 730-830pm = beginers class
Tuesday and Thursday 830-930pm = Graded Class.
Freddylee 14-01-2006, 00:32 White, Red , yellow, Orange ,Green, Purple, Blue, Brown , Black
thought grades were given to traditional martial arts, is not kickboxing a modern sport??
Freddylee 14-01-2006, 14:28 kickboxing is very much a modern martial art
even in traditional martial arts the only belt was a white one.
it kept your pants up
it didnt get washed so it got so dirty throughout time that eventually it became black.
the coloured grade system came in more contemporary times
the kickboxing grading system in our club (www.sheffieldkickboxing.com)
is the same one used by WAKO= World Association of Kickboxing Organisations
So its a credible one
so do the grades signify the length of time you have been training or the ability of an individual?
Freddylee 16-01-2006, 15:46 there is a syllabus for each belt
there is also a minimum time limit
ive been training for over 5 years and am still only a blue belt.
there is also a grading criteria. if you arent good enough you wont get the next belt, there are some people who have been at it a couple of years and still only orange belt.
have you ever heard of phil glover, he was european kickboxing champion at both feather and bantam weight, and the wako favorite ray mckenzie
Freddylee 16-01-2006, 16:18 i have heard of phil glover my instructor introduced me to him at a thaiboxing judes course in leeds
ray mckenzie was a very good fighter too
well then you will know phil was not a 'black belt at kick boxing' but black belt at karate and niether did he grade his students in kick boxing, you had your own grade from your own style he taught you to fight in the ring
ray was at the last i heard 4th dan ay wad-a-ru and not kick boxing?? and as for a very good fighter british open wtf taekwondo champion, wako british champion 5 times on the trot european sliver x2

Purely out of interest the modern belt system was created by Kano Jigoro sensei, the founder of Judo.
judo now theres a sport! belt systems go back through ninjitsu, japan, white, green, black, traditional thai arm band colours, which indicate novice, intermediate, advanced.
belt and colour markings have been around long before judo, judo was created out of jujitsu to get away from the traditional training or family methods to make it faster and more efective, like in any sport you train sport nesasary, it was first taught to japanese police and the armed forces the guys who had to subdue an opponent quikley

Cheers Claw! :)
Freddylee 17-01-2006, 14:25 in that case claw since you think you know so much.
Ray was well known for competing in karate NOT kickboxing at a high level.
also thaiboxing arm band colours: There is NO grading system in thailand , the grading system in thaiboxing is made up!
In kickboxing however there is a recognised grading system in place thats recognised all voer the world.
World Associaiton of Kickboxing Organisations
World kicboxing association
they both do a fully comprehensive grading syllabus

On the subject of WAKO, do you have any idea what Alfie Lewis is up to nowadays? Not heard much about him for a few years.
Freddylee 17-01-2006, 15:09 alfie lewis never called himself a kicboxer even though he had something like 3 kickboxing fihts
alfie lewis is now invovled with WKA= world Karate association
The WKA have 2 sections
the birimingham one is run by paul ingram and paul sutton (for the full contact and the kickboxing)
the manchester one is for the semi and the light contact freestyle karate
ray must have entered the wako championships by mistake then, i have known ray since the age of 5 and i have been training in martial arts myself since aged 12, i have been doing tkd for the last 17 years and been coaching for the last 14, i am now 45, been around the scene alot longer than most and still compete at full contact and still winning:hihi:
alfie was fsk
Freddylee 18-01-2006, 15:11 ray entered the semi contact and the light continuous divisions not the full contact division.
the full contact worlds have only ever been won by :
Dev Barret (coventry) the first english man ever to win a world full contact title
Chris Mcniesh = was such a superkicker the Klitschko brothers (who are now boxing ) rated him
Howard Brown = world feather weight champ under both rules above waist and leg kicks. He won his world title under leg kick rules over 12x2mins!!!
David Taylor
Gary Turner who know does K-1
