I am 90% sure that the head gasket has gone on my 1991 Celica (non-turbo), so can you recommend me a motor factors to source the part from and a decent mechanic that won't bankrupt me? I loathe taking the car to high street garages - they charge too much and often don't know what they are doing.

The car is driveable, I just have to fill up with water first. I would do it myself, but I don't have a torque wrench (and haven't done one before)

I have recently changed the rad (it needed doing anyway) but it didn't cure the water leak I had. Last night I had to go to Loughborough and when I stopped to fill it up with water steam was coming from the left side of the head near the cam-belt.

If you arent already sorted, try Highfields on Attercliffe Road/Common. Theyre a motor factors and Garage and the cheapest I know of and are good at what they do.

Highfields on the cliff are certainly the cheepest for jap bits and have a good unerstanding of what your after not like some so called factors also try yorkshire autoparts on rutland rd they carry a large stock of jap parts. As for spannermen your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks for all the help ,will phone around.

I'm 90% sure thats it's the head gasket, when I pulled up at a garage to fill it up with water steam was coming from the left hand side of the top of the engine. BUT - I filled the rad and the header tank and it has been OK since monday.....? The water level in the rad has not gone down.

And I can't work out if its losing water when stood or when running.

I am now confused...........

check your oil filler cap, if it looks like mayonnaise it's cos oil and water are mixing together, also, if water's going in the oil the oil level will be up....and the water (coolant) may be oily...

Get the Haynes Manual and go through it
It will stand you in good stead.
It is not wise to operate any peice of machinery unless you have an idea how it works
