I can only vouch for the AA. Every time has been great. They tell me when they are due, give me a call/texts to update me and call me as they approach. 9/10 they have always got my car running and on two occasions have come back the next day and fitted things to my car (once free, second time a fiver for parts).

Never used any of the others but would recommend AA although they are no the cheapest.

I think I get the free AA cover with my bank, but not entirely sure :?

All I know is I have a number under my tax disc for the AA and if I ever get into a pickle I ring it, and they come and sort it :D

AA are top banana

If you buy online, it will be cheaper.

The AA are ace - quite expensive but worth every penny.

This year I've called them out numerous time and its always the same two guys and they're really, really helpful and friendly.

Only been involved with incidents involving the AA twice

Once, the car broke down in the slip road leaving the M62 one night. The car was visible from the motorway, and was only 5 or 6 miles from a major town centre. A police patrol called by TWICE, stopped and called the AA. Despite this, it took them SEVEN HOURS to appear. No apology or explanation.

A second time, I was a passenger in a car which broke down on Price of Wales Road between Christmas and New Year (c4:00 p.m.) The AA said they were busy, could be take the car to a garage and get it sorted? Where will you find a garage open after 4:00 p.m. between Christmas and New Year?

I've used both AA and RAC, much the same. I keep switching as they try to outdo each other on price.

The AA completely screwed my housemate over. She broke down in the middle of nowhere late one night and the two truck which was meant to tow her to the nearest garage (as in her policy) came out and said he had permission to tow her from where she was... to the end of the layby a few metres away.

She phoned the AA to no avail, they said the garage was 'too far away' for her to be towed to (no mention of THAT when they sign you up) they wouldn't do anything till the next day (young woman in the middle of nowhere on her own in the middle of the night, great) and even then would only help after her upgrading her membership a lot there and then. The driver waited with her for two hours whilst he and she tried to contact the relevant people to sort it out. Eventually he decided not to leave her there and she got home.

Needless to say neither of us renewed our AA membership. The guy said that the AA used to be brilliant but in the last couple of years they had been taken over by some other company and since then had been nothing but trouble.

He said Green Flag were the best of the bunch (although we are with the RAC this year because we got top whack membership for free from evil Tesco and their clubcard scheme. Which probably makes us sell-outs)

Check out: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1094823518,14076,

I'm with AutoAid for £29/year as it is a pay & claim service (The article explains all...) and although I have not had to use them everything I have heard is positive. If you have a reliable car it's the way to go IMO.

I use International Breakdown which are very cheap because they use a list of garages around the UK instead of recruiting their own. Same services apply but with variations around the country in terms of what equipment they carry as bog standard.
I've called them out twice, once on a Sunday down south which took forever, I reckon the guy was eating his roast, the second on a Monday morning on the M1 and they were there quickly, cheerfully and immediately did what was needed.
Cheap as chips.

I found the AA a total rip off. Having been a paying member since 1991 I had the misfortune of breaking down 3 times in one year in 2003. At the time of my renewal they tried to put my annual cover up by 250% as I was a 'high risk' member (in other words I was someone who had actually used their service in the year). I cut all ties with them.

This year I come out of my free warranty and am joing the RAC.
