I know Bob but my computer said"On line"does that mean I was on line the last time I was on my computer. No im not trying to connect.I want to work off line, thats all. Ann* 02-01-2006, 22:21 BobDaBuilder, Pattricia is a complete novice with computers, so needs to be treated gently:) Pattricia, do you mean the dial-up connection "box" ~ just click on cancel or work offline if you don't want to work online. If you want to connect to the internet and work online, then click connect. pattricia 02-01-2006, 22:30 Originally posted by Ann_x BobDaBuilder, Pattricia is a complete novice with computers, so needs to be treated gently:) Pattricia, do you mean the dial-up connection "box" ~ just click on cancel or work offline if you don't want to work online. No,Anne,I want to work offline & not have my phone connected.Thats all I want to know. Can I do this ?I know I have to be online for certain things, but dont want to run up my phone bill if I dont need to be online. Sorry,I feel awful now for asking. BobDaBuilder 02-01-2006, 22:43 My apologies Patsy...I didn't mean to come across all harsh love, but I still don't understand what you mean by the question...what are you running when you are being asked this...do you mean the box that asks if you want to connect? if so, I think you're having the same probs I used to have on DU (Dial up)...does the box keep appearing all the time? if so just ignore it, doesn't really matter what you click cos if your lines not connected you wont be able to connect and therefore wont incure any charges... Don't feel bad about askin, that's what the forum is here for..you've mad me feel really bad now and I shall go and punish myself...brb PS: If you are trying to access any page on the net then you do have to establish a connection. The only pages you will be able to access are ones you have saved to access off-line but you wont be able to refresh them or do anything with them, just makes them read-only so that you can read a large page without incurring charges xxx pattricia 03-01-2006, 21:01 Im on dial up connection & wanted to see what happened when I didnt plug the telephone line in.I could read e mails, but not send or receive them. Also I am trying to learn how to save some photos, and im sure I can do that without being connected to a phone line. It said at the bottom of my screen working online & a picture of a computer.I couldnt understand why it said this when I wasnt connected to a telephone line.I clicked on FILE then clicked working offline, but when I next went on my computer I was still offline(which I didnt want)I want to learn all about offline & online.Dont worry about telling me off,Im thick skinned. melthebell 03-01-2006, 21:04 you can open outlook express and read your emails youve already downloaded offline but you need to be online to send and recieve them you will also need to be online if the photos are via the internet or email tbh i wouldnt bother with the online/offline business apart from obviously when you want to disconnect from the internet, click disconnect simonj 03-01-2006, 21:21 Laypersons terms..... On-line and off-line refer to the status of your connection to the internet only. On-line - You are connected to the internet and all it has to offer eg live web pages, send and receive e-mail. This will cost you either as part of your broadband subscription, or by the second/minute if you are on dial-up. Off-line - You are not connected to the internet, you cannot see live web pages, send and receive e-mail etc. You are not being charged. You can however, view e-mails in Outlook/Outlook Express that you have already sent and received, including the saving of any attachments to those e-mails. If you have a web based e-mail (Yahoo, Hotmail etc) then you will not be able to log on to your account and save any attachments, be they photos, documents etc). Hope that helps a little Pattricia  pattricia 03-01-2006, 21:25 Yes, Simon,it does, thanks very much. ToryCynic 04-01-2006, 00:16 I remember those days - had to dial-up to an 0845 PAYG Freeserve jobby, I'd write all the e-mails, get them sent to the Outbox, and send them all in one go! Was doing that as late as 2001! It was a big thing sending a PowerPoint presentation - :D I think monthly dial-up is dead, but PAYG is evidently still going. :) |
