I have today been in the The Barrow Boy's Pub that used to be on Shude Hill under Commercial Street.

Strange little place,I understand it shut in the 1980's and was popular with skinheads, however can't find out when it was built? its history? or find any pictures inside or out (apart from what it looks like now)

Just interested that's all :loopy:

I understand it was built as part of the road when commercial street was built as that part of the road as a bridge overy Pond St. Part of the arch I beleive was used at one one for the old rag and tag markets for storeage , hence the name barrow boys *.

It was a a nice little put with its bare brick walls and flag stone floor - ps I wasnt a skin head - just thought I would make that clear.

*Barrow boys appears to be a local name given to market trader lads who were used to take goods mainly fruit and veg into the market on barrows

Has it reopened then ? I used to love it in there probably around 1986, it had a real old feel to the place, if it is open again I bet I'll get goosebumps when I walk in :)

Blimey I remember drinking in there in my teens, was full of some salt of the earth folk, I used to go in for a few when going to the market, when we had a bit of pride in our market before Meadowhall and the likes sucked the life out of it.

Remember spending a lot of time drinking before and after a few court appearances also, especially nice when I wasn't expecting to have the opportunity to.

Trying to remember this, it must have been towards the end of Flat Street where the old YEB building was/is

Not sure where the YEB building was. The Barrow Boys was actually underneath the bridge that carries Commercial Street over Pond Street/Shude Hill. As you walk from the little pub on the lane it was on the right hand side. If you look on Street View you can just see the boarded up door. Sorry, don't know how to do a link for it.

Why is there always a gaggle of teenage street-drinkers under that bridge every teatime?

Jew Lane was/is immediately to the right of the Barclays building. It's just a walkway now. I don't think it comes out anywhere. The nameplate was removed a few years ago. Probably someone in the town hall being offended on behalf of others.

I'm thinking money lending/pawn shops, however there were Jewish stall holders in the old Rag & Tag (Harry Rubenstein for a start), I wonder if there was a Jewish getto there in Victorian times.

Do you remember the Jewish guy with the club foot who had the fishing tackle shop on Mansfield Road, opposite the Woodthorpe pub? His name was Davison, he lived on Fretson Road.

There was an old Russian Cossack who lived somewhere down Prince of Wales Road. My best mates cousin is a Manor lad, or more like lass, if you met him with his partner, a lovely couple though, live and let live I say.

I recall a party in the living accommodation in the 60's when Rod's mum and dad were on holiday. It was well attended, even with Rod's support of SUFC, there were a number of SWFC players attending.

Rod came up with this idea that all the blokes should switch clothing with the girls. This is a lot harder for the blokes than it is for the girls, there was the sound of an opening door, and in stepped Mr and Mrs Amies home early from their holiday.

Harold Amies never again looked at me in the way that he used to. :help:

Crookesey, Cuttsie, Stevie, Hardie, Greavesie, Giggsy etc - that's all very interesting, but please return to the point of the OP. Ted has signed up to SF specifically to tell us all he went in some little old pub in the centre of Sheffield this week which has been closed for a generation. Is he having us on?

"I have today been in the The Barrow Boy's Pub that used to be on Shude Hill under Commercial Street."

So is it still under there then or what? Has it reopened? Where has Ted gone?

this space/room/location under the road for a long time had a very dodgyt shutter down, behind which various types would disappear. i suspect there was a complaint about something illicit happening behind there, to stop unauthorised access. i went past the day that the new shutter went past, and got a glimpse inside, it looked amazing! would be a brilliant place for a club/music venue.....ok so there is hotel ibis next door but. must have been a crazy pub, with no windows there!!!

in other news, for those interested in jew lane (which till now i thought you meant bakers hill, never noticed this lane!) you wont have much more chance to go down there: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-meetings/planninghighways/citycentresouthandeast/agendas-2011/agenda-26th-september-2011 read the reports on jew lane there which are about it being stopped up.
