Hi, my names Nicola and im a third year textile design student at Huddersfield uni. Im currently about to start my final project, and i want to base it on abandoned buildings around sheffield. does anyone know of any buildings that you can get into, or does anyone have any pictures i could copy? i know Dan Sumption had a thread with photo's he'd taken but i can't find it. also, are there any ruined buildings around? I can't PM yet cos ive not made enough posts, but my email is nicela@blueyonder.co.uk if anyone has any info! i dont want to get done for trespassing but i know there must be some ruined buildings somewhere that you can get into. Thanks!

Just to point out that entering disused buildings, however disused or abandoned -looking, is still TRESPASS, and could get you into a heck of a lot of trouble.

Please bear that in mind, as I would not want the forum to get into schtukk by seeming to condone trespass, and "breaking and entering"

Loxley fish farm has a pretty large site that you can stroll around...head out towards bradfield (From sheffield) and carry on up Loxley road, when you see a bus stop on your right take that left....just keep going down until ya can't go any further, there is a smallish abandoned steel (I think) yard.

There is a national network of people who spend their freetime (or some of it!) getting into and photographing aneverything from old urban churches to disused military installations, and everything inbetween.

Their website is absolutely fascinating, and at least one of the members posts on here............. but I can't remember who they are or the name of the organisation!!! Back in a bit, I think I remember a thread they were posting on.

There's nothing really local here, but it's a fascinating site anyway:

Hi Nicola
Its a pity you didn't do your project about 40 years ago, Sheffield was amass of these abandoned buildings, i spent most of my youth exploring such buildings, places like
"The Swinging Gallows" on the railway sidings bottom Wybourn,
"Mudfords" at the bottom of the park, since burnt down
(nowt t do wi me).
and "Nunnery pit" next to Cowlishaws pond (cowlogs).

Good times, even though these places were death traps for young kids, no wonder the mortality rate was high in those days,
Did anyone else frequent or remember these places?

the old warehouses/factories on penistone road - on the corner by the casino and dog track are disused.

they are also inhabited by some not too pleasant druggies.

'Trespass' isn't a criminal offence, is it? It's a civil matter - if you're on someone's property and they tell you to leave, and you leave, that's the end of it. They could sue you, but if you hadn't done any damage, they wouldn't get any money (that's why it's called 'damages').

So I don't think you could get into any trouble for 'condoning' trespassing.

you used to be able to get into the clock tower at the new wadsley park village estate but i am not too sure if it is accessible anymore.

To the side of the car park of the Tesco on Abbeydale road is an abandoned firm, just wander down Troutbeck road and you can walk straight in.
So many derelict buildings are now the site of posh looking apartments which I'm sure are being built to look as bland as possible.

hiya,
as part of my 'get fit' regime for the new year, i walked back into the city centre from hilsboro after dropping kids off at school.:D Anyhoooos, walked through shalesmoor - just to the side of tesco - on a road called Malinda street(?) are quite a few old buildings, many still used, but several that are obviously derelict that look accessible. one has iron bars as windows, and no roof - very arty if you like that kind of thing :D
seemed pretty safe to walk through as a single female, and theres also a scrummy cafe in one of the old buidlings. oh, the smell of bacon butties......:hihi:
anyway, try round there - you can get to it by nipping round the iron railings that are opposite the big garage at the bottom of st phillips road......or from the side exit to tescos carpark and walking straight on.
sue:D

The best of the best has got to be Ballard Hall (or Bollock Hall as it is affectionately known). It is located in Ranmoor, just off Fulwood Road (?) and is well worth a tresspass. You can access the site really easily by squidging through the metal railing thingies and it always seems to be junkie free whenever i go there.

There are loads of derelict public loos too if you like that kinda thing...and how about the morsoleum in the general cemetary off Eccy Rd? The whole cemetary is a good un with an abandoned church and zombie graves, but i wouldn't go rootling round there on my own, even in daylight. Apparently it is a total junkie nest.

What about the Holiday Inn on Fulwood Road/Manchester Road (I think that's what it's called - it's the same road that Bollock Hall is off). Dunno if you will get into this one without a ladder and balls of steel, but it's worth a try.

There is a yummy big old derelict house just down from Norfolk Park which you could access. I will stop here as my nerdiness is beggining to scare me......

both places I got into (crookesmoore and sharrow church) were boarded up fairly soon after I chronicled it on here, so be warned - big brother is watching.

Its not that bad actually unless its gone downhill recently. I used to take my guitar there as lived just round corner and sit and write songs.

You can climb up and peak into one window of the church. I leaned in and took some photos a couple of years back. There is lots of strange writing over the walls but no one can get in to take a closer look.

I strongly suggest that you dont go to places like this on your own and take a phone as some of the places are quite hazardous.

There are plenty of abandoned buildings around Sheffield. I know because I have been taking photos of lots of them over the past few weeks, exteriors only!.

I wouldnt really risk entering them for 2 reasons, firstly the tresspassing issue and also the safety aspect. Some of the buildings I have took photos of look in a very bad way and who knows what could fall on you inside, or who could be lurking around ready to attack you.

I love the old buildings as they are reminders of Sheffield's past industrial scene with some well-known company names too. No doubt someday they will be demolished by regeneration though.

The idea of urban exploring (like on the 28 days later site) is a fascinating way to capture the past but far too risky. 28 days later is a good site though! I found it a couple of years ago online.

I was in the disused joinery opposite Butcher Works on Arundel Street recently. Lovely old building but unfortunately it's becoming vandalised. The idea of urban exploration or 'urbex' is you take nothing except photographs, and leave nothing except footprints. Salvagers and vandals are not urban explorers.

The old Psalter Lane Art College is amazing inside, but is very very secure, with 24 hour on-site security. I was in there for professional reasons. Not a place you should go as you would not be able to get in without breaking and entering (something else urban explorers don't do). However, here are some photos of it:

Some numpty has smashed the drainpipes breaking into George Barnsley's very recently - in the last week (The window above the drainpipe is only narrow so it surely can't be that bloody Mozaz character again)

I say "Breaking In" because I believe the Landlord had secured the building after Mozaz & Sidekick tried to raise their profile by entering and kicking up a fuss (again, giving others a bad name)

I know not all explorers do this, but the idiotic few give them a bad name.

What do you mean? I only know them a little, and would be interested to hear about the stuff they get up to. My experience has been that they just go into buildings for photographs or to use the space as a one off, but I don't know enough.

If that's their only intention, then lord knows why they had to be in the paper about it and give interviews about it (in which Mozaz blatantly lied about his involvement in a group which rented a property from the same landlord)

They gave interviews to a paper about entering an abandoned building? Word, that's stupid and unnecessary unless they had a specific point to make.

Oh, and Mozaz is, umm, not the first person to take at his word.

Textile designers live young, dye fast! Beware of toxic death on some of these old sites and buildings.Asbestos is still worse than toxic debt.
