Posting on the "Are you from Sheffield" thread prompted this thought - since I moved to Sheffield in 1989 there always seems to have been some sort of major works going on. Has it always been like this? Was there this much development through the 50's, 60's and 70's?
When I moved here Meadowhall was just being finished, then the facilities for the world student games, then Supertram, 000's of city centre appartments, the final link of the inner ring road through Shalesmoor, the Heart of the City project to come etc etc etc. Will Sheffield ever be finished?

the developments in the 1950s and 60s were mostly the clearing of slum dwellings, and the replacement of housing that was destroyed during the war.
this is why we havd the huge spread of newer estates, out into places like Gleadless Valley, Lowedges, Hackenthorpe, Totley.
We also have, currently the replacement of the maisonettes and social housing that was built in the 1950s and 60s in the Netherthorpe area, with lower-rise properties. Which all seems a bit ironic.
There were quite a few schools built to serve these areas, too.
There were also loads of shops and office blocks built in the 50s and 60s, you've only got to look around the city centre...not to mention, there's the Arts tower at the Sheffield University...
The fountain precinct, which is built on the site of the Grand Hotel.
The housing offices, opposite howden house, built on the site of the Empire theatre,
Mingdom, sorry, "KING "dom, that scaffolding clad monstrosity, which was built on the site of the art-deco Gaumont cinema, in Barkers Pool.
The RSVP bar on the corner of Barkers Pool, is built on the site of a victorian pub, called the Albert, IIRC.
If you look at the Norfolk Street area, there are a shedload of newer buildings, some of which cut right across the original road's path (i'm thinking of the offices on Arundel Gate that run beside the Roxy.
A city does not stay static, it is always in a state of flux. Sometimes, it's change for the better, sometimes progress simply is another word for riding roughshod over the heritage that was in place before.

Are any family houses being built in Sheffield? Is it just apartments? Anyone know?

yes, family houses are being built.
There are the new "mixed usage" on Manor (part for sale, part for rent)
I am quite settled where I am so I don't now keep my eye on new housing projects going up in quite the same way as I used to.
