I found out yesterday that Hallam Methodist Church, on Nether Green Road, is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, 2006.
Does anyone know what the area was like 250 years ago? The houses around the church look far younger than 250 years. Who were the people the church served in the early days?
1756 would have seen its first congregation.

It's not the anniversary of the church, it's the anniversary of the foundation of a Methodist Society in Hallam, which is not quite the same thing? But you're right, the area would have been very different then, just scattered farms between the small village of Fulwood and Sheffield, with a few 'big' houses such as Fulwood Hall, Stumperlowe Hall and Whiteley Wood Hall. And along the Porter there would have been a scattering of water mills, of which the Shepherd Wheel is the sole survivor.
