Does anyone know anything about a small area of wetland just east of Hard Lane in Kiveton, which as kids, we knew by the strange name of "Tommy Floptons". Why the name?

I believe the area has now been built on. But back in the early 70s there used to be a shallow lake there which was visited by swans each year.

Hi, it hasn't been built on, there are horses grazing on it.

Tommy Flockton was a surveyor who lived in the area in about 1880. It is also know as Pennyholme Marsh and the Norwood Tunnel of the Chesterfield Canal runs under it.

Hi, just seen the message re Tommy Flockton's I remember skating on it during the big freeze of 1947 and being chased when the ice started to crack and we were still skating on the solid parts.
