Does anyone know what happened to StudentComp computers on West St? I bought a computer there a couple of months ago and now have a fault. It seems to have closed down and my pc is still under warrantee. Help!

They used to have a website of www.studentcomp.co.uk but that doesn't seem to find anything when I try it. Afraid to say you could be right, I only work around the corner from their shop, and I hadn't even noticed.

Did you pay for it using your credit card? If so, you may have some insurance that way, could be worth checking out.

yeah, i'm pretty sure they've closed. You could always try at n2c, but that wouldn't be free.

What is the problem? maybe we can help you?

Ugh, this kind of thing is exactly why I never use small backstreet computer shops, they are unreliable and as shows, untrustworthy....

Sure it means paying "through the nose" for my PC hardware/software etcm but at least I know the likes of PC World aren't going to go bust or run off with my money, or worse, both!

There is a really good little computer shop on Taplin Road in Hillsborough. They have been there a few years now. The service is great and prices are more than reasonable. Might be worth a try.

Can you describe the fault? It might be something easy to fix.

Reasonable  You should shop around more!! Has anyone noticed with that company too that if you buy online it will cost you far more than going into the shop??

There is also a computer shop on Langsett Road but I don't know if they do repairs.

I think Student comp has been broken into. Their shutters look like they have had work done on them!

I always thought StudentComp looked dodgy anyway, more interested in selling mobile phones than computers. Prices weren't exactly cheap either

They were good at one time. But the shop is definitely cleared out. I had a good service off them. But I too got concerned when they stared focusing heavily on mobiles.

Thanks for all your replies. I've now got it sorted at another shop on West St. Yes I think studentcomp were pretty dodgy - they are probably in Mexico sipping sipping cocktails by now.

it's not only backstreet computer shops that are going out of business. what about PC giants Multivision? Top quality 'build-to-order' PC's, but even they couldn't compete with Mesh, Eavesham, etc. PC market is more cut-throat than any other.

Studentcomp were a joke. One of my housemates got totally screwed over by them... when you spend over a grand on a PC you expect it to be stable for longer than five minutes.

Took them about six months to finally get it sorted, and their customer service over that period was a joke.

So good riddance! But bad luck to the people who bought any kind of extended warranty. The moral of that story? Never buy extended warranties from anywhere, they're a total waste of time because most problems can be solved by a look on the 'net, and everyone has a friend who knows what they're doing with PCs...

Don't they?

i've been advised never to buy a PC unless i can actually pick the parts going into it, decent motherboard from a-bit or asus, no crappy on-board SIS graphics which you can't update the drivers for Direct X 9 (hubby's words, not mine), and a cd burner which works successfully with CloneCD, etc. etc. always get ours from Mesh and have had absolutely no problems as we pick what goes inside. easier for upgrading too. does anyone buying from PC World know exactly what motherboard is in the PC?

My flatmate bought a laptop from there for about £1000, and all the keys were in the wrong place! The £ button never worked either!!! It took them months to get it fixed!

They say ignorance is bliss... if you're buying a machine from PC World it might be better not to know what's inside as you'll only be kicking yourself that you didn't go elsewhere...

I have too say that extended warrenties can be useful. I took one on my ps2 cost £40 for 5 years all my friends laughed now its broke I'm getting a replacement (new controller as well) saved me £76. Would have cost me £115 to replace new.

Months later ... think they've done a runner - not sure if it's same company but 'Studentcomputers.co.uk LTD' was dissolved on the 17th August this yr. Am trying to figure out if it's the same people - they'd only existed since sept. 2001 so think it fits? What's anyone think?

Really just wondering if anyone has a computer from StudentComp that actually works?!

If you want to buy a pc, and the salesman will not tell you or does not know what's inside, then walk away.

I've never bashed PC world. I bought this machine from there (in one of their "bargain goodwill returns" deals) and I found the assistant to be helpful, if a little thin on the ground knowledge-wise. But given clear instructions as to what I wanted to know, he duly went and found out.

He didn't even harass me for an extended warranty, but then again I was buying a fresh tower and PSU at the same time, and made it perfectly clear that after a couple of days to make sure nothing was going to fry, it would be ripped apart and added to. Still worked out cheaper than buying the individual components.

I went with my mother to buy a PC too in their Hull branch. This time the assistant was more pushy (looking at my mother and assuming naivety I think). But he soon realised he was on a loser when he was told what we wanted, not asked what he thought we wanted. Then my mother's expert haggling skills that would shame a far-eastern market stallholder got him and she ended up with a better deal than anything they advertised in the papers.

Moral is: If you don't know what you're on about, don't go near PC world without someone more knowledgable. After all, you'd take a mate with you if you were about to spend a grand on a car, wouldn't you? If you do know what you want, and have a reasonable idea of the market, PC world is just another shop, and sometimes their buying power means you can push for a better deal than a smaller retailer would be able to give.

Intresting. As for buying computers is conserned, avoid buying a commertial pc. Go to the smaller shops such as Crown computers etc. Make sure they are established first though.

Do NOT buy a computer from any store in dixons group. That includes dixons, pc world, curries... etc. First of all... god knows what crap componants they shove in there. Second of all.. if the thing goes wrong... they don't want to know about it. I got my first PC from dixons in town centre. And boy was it a pile of crap. Turns out it used to be a display model, and someone allready braught it back. By the time I found this out.. it was too late. First thing that went wrong was the modem... and thats were the crap started. Eventually, we had to threaten leagel action before they would come out and replace the broken modem. Had problems with that computer all throughout its life.

Got this one from crown computers in august. Cost me less.. GREAT deal. Good service and nice people. I highly recomend them (they are located on london road)

Going back to dixons.... they sell shoddy stuff. Since then i have not baught anything from them, and the rest of dixons group. That ****** salesman totally screwd me over. His name was Garath, and had dodgy side burns. IF I EVER SEE YOU AGAIN, FEAR OF LOOSING YOU HEAD. Ya i'll kill that ****er for that.

Heard student comp did a runner, abandoned their lease. The reason it looks broken into is because the landlord had to break in as they ran off with his keys.

Has anyone seen the new shop on langsett road opposite morrisons called Very PC.
I like the name!
These guys have been doing our work computer support for a year now and they just opened a show room.
Real stylish PC's, not like any of this white box cr*p.
Also none of this PC world 'packard bell' sh*te.

I do. It's a c.r.a.p. motherboard. Come Tuesday, we'll be on our 3rd in three years.
