View Full Version : White Bear Ecclesfield - not closing down any more.
Such a shame, even tho Me and vickie had our little input there, it is a shame that the pub will be closing down on Jan 28 due to being sold off to yet another business development company to turn into offices, (same company who took over Griffin)
Best wishes to Martine (Eric_The_Man) and Shelly in there new ventures, a pitty that the brewery could have seen this pub as a going concern and therefor it could still have been a viable pub in the community, however as always the people of Ecclesfield will suffer yet again a disposal of another good local. :(
To be fair the bear was closed for 6 months before.
It was re-opened on June 20th and was run for a month with a manager (solely on his own for Roger) before us four took over and spent the hours and time decorating the place to what it is now, but you would think the fact that we did £7 short of £3000 in our third week (we left on the 4th) and the apparent increase in business since we left back in September, would make the brewery think that they have a proffitable business on thier hands.
Ecclesfield square had four public houses, sadly looking as though it will go down to two.
Let's just hope The Black Bull does not go the same way
Oh for **** sake.
Nowt like killing the village is their.
What crap news. Thought they'd done a good job of bringing the pub on, but obviously not.
Not the best/nicest pub, but at least it was another option.
Shocking.
Property values will rise in Ecclesfield as its reputation improves.
an "olde worlde" village like this should never have had to suffer the behaviour of loonies attracted to "the square" on an evening.
This area has been blighted for too long with broken glass all over outside and disgusting behaviour.
The local residents will be delighted.
well i do have to say im not at all suprised that it is closing down...i think the wrong people have been running the pub for Rodger..it was only a matter of time?i have wondered what the managemant at present will do when its closed.....maybe a little modelling perhaps...or maybe he/she will go round the corner and manage the Black Bull....anyone want a bet on how many weeks it will be before the Bull closes too?
its a shame but it was inevitable....
Sorry 29th Jan not the 28th
sarah_be 03-01-2006, 11:29 Property values will rise in Ecclesfield
Totally agree, act now before they do.
Mod. Note
I've removed some postings from this thread because they were potentially libellous or might have bearing on legal matters.
If there is any other information about the closure of the pub, fine.
But if the users concerned wish to carry on with the bickering and accusations then I'll close the thread.
Thanks,
Joe
Yes a wise move, however I would have liked my response to have had the same airtime and views, however I made my point
fredspants 09-01-2006, 16:53 well i fink its just pants innit.

George left in January 2005 then the pub was closed until late June
freespirit 11-01-2006, 15:13 It is not a great surprise that the White Bear is about to close yet again but this time; it seems, for the last time. This demonstrates again that operating and managing a pub is far from an easy task with the necessary crippling overheads that are made even worse by the vastly inflated fees charged by others providing services to the pub trade who think they are indispensable. With the challenges facing the pub industry at present it is a certainty that many other pubs will follow in the footsteps of the White Bear.

Totally agree, as with these type of pubs, Brewerys ask extortionate rent, then there's business rate, gas and electric is charged at a higher rate than domestic customers are, and then the brewerys want you to purchase only thier product at a higher rate than as such as Beer Express etc, on top of this if you employ someone such as Bar Staff you have to make sure they are adequately insured along with the general public that visit your premises. and all this before you get anyone in your pub.
Then we get to "how do we get people into the pub" let's take SKY for example, they charge 10 times more than a home domestic user, these days most people tend to be enticed into venues that have entertainment on, which has to be paid for as the entertainer has his/her runing costs of his/her own, all across the entertainment industry people charge various fee's.
Classic Rock 11-01-2006, 15:59 More the case of the owners of the pub, a well known pub company, selling it to a private company to develop, rather than the pub going under because it hasn't been doing too well.
Whenever you are renting a pub, as most publicans are, you are at the mercy of the pub company and what they plan to do. If you're lucky then you have a long lease that simply has annual rent reviews, if you're unlucky then you have a short term one and anything could happen after that. I've had two pubs with short leases and the sword of Damacles is forever hanging over your head. You're always waiting for the phone call from the brewery to tell you what your future will hold.
What also happens with some pub patrons as well is that they can really make a good go of running the place, and ingratiate themselves well with the locals and people who regularly go in the pub, and then the Brewery will hike the rent up so much that the couple can no longer afford it...
They did it to Mick and Cath that had the Crown and Glove (Top House) near us last year, and got some useless muppet in instead who instantly put the beer prices up, didn't do sandwiches on quiz nights like they used to, and changed the format of the quiz itself making it too hard... :loopy:
Consequently hardly anyone goes in nowadays, most of the regulars stopped, even we stopped going, we're regulars for the quiz in the Robin Hood nowadays on a Wednesday night.
told_pinz 17-01-2006, 20:20 well from reading these reports i am interested in how you are such good man for giving concern for the pub as i saw the brilliant changes from the white bear. it is a real disapointment for the people as for Martine and shelly which i guess they are the runners of the pub. i have give them the best wishes and hope they keep there heads up high and give them all the support that you are also showing to give. I hope they take on another pub such as one local and make it a success.
Sad to hear about the White Bear closing down. Ex-girlfriend is from Ecclesfield so had a few nights out round there - did someone say another boozer in the square had shut as well???
It wasn't a bad nightout round Ecclesfield but i always thought the best two boozers were the Travellers (before it turned into a young persons boozer:) and the one further up on the right on the way to Chap, can't remember the name of it. Have to say i preferred supping round High Green though.
standonowl 19-01-2006, 16:15 sorry to hear about white bear closing. used to go in quite a bit when the square was more like magaluf !!!! though in hindsight must have been bad for the locals. Nail in coffin when griffin closed i think....will be more like acorn antiques down there now
told_pinz 19-01-2006, 18:05 Well hope fully you all go and have one last drink! i know i am. good luck to the Landlords

Hey, its just occurred to me that I'll need to start thinking of where to move my Ecclesfield rock and roll operation to on a Friday night. Any suggestions anyone?

eric_the_man 23-01-2006, 11:23 Great News everyone, the pub IS staying open now, possibly for the next Ten Years as Roger has signed or about to sign a deal with the new owners 'Jaguar Estates'.
Myself and Shelly will be ending our time there on Saturday with one hell of a party where everyone is welcome, even Bruno as lets face it. as i have said all along to people who have come into the pub. there were four of us that started to build the pub back up and that can never change. four people with a vision, determination and hard work.
it was unfortunate that as we all know, business and friendship never go together as happend in this case. which is sad really as we were all good friends at one time.
Me and Shelly are looking at other at other options at the moment and will post details on here when the time is right
Me and Shelly would like to thank EVERYONE involved in raising the white bear from the gutter and hope that it goes from strength to strength with Roger running it as of 29th January.
Eric_The_Man
Thats great news. which is also good for the other Pubs in the village as well as the customers.
As said lets hope The Bear and the rest of the Pubs go from strength to strength.
Good Luck to Roger and Clare.
And echoing what Martine said: "Thankyou to the customers who supported us four when we took over.
And good luck to Martine and Shelly, who im sure feel gutted that thier time has come to an end. (we felt the same) but we all knew it was'nt going to be long term, even though all four of us put alot of hard work in cleaning/decorating/sorting the cellar and the behind the scenes of juggling our own jobs. Have a good Party on Saturday!
told_pinz 23-01-2006, 12:38 wow thats great news! i hope the party is good also. Thats right business and friendship doesn't last as i witnessed my self good luck also to Roger and Clair as they try to keep the pub up to the standard that martine and shelly did.

Is this the same Jaguar Estates that buy buildings, knock them down and then build luxury apartments.
Is this the same Jaguar Estates that buy buildings, knock them down and then build luxury apartments.
Yes it is, however I would assume The White Bear is a listed building, but not sure if any part of the building is 100 years old
u and me 23-01-2006, 13:27 i would like to say that martine and shelly has done a great job in running the white bear on their own were always in the pub and they make it the life and soul of what a pub should be likeTHANKYOU too them both its only you too that made that pub what it is today WELL DONE ure both great and good luck for the future too you both!!!!

Is that Legally allowed? a 15 year old collecting glasses in a Pub?:wow:
Yes, fairly sure its allowed, providing they don't work behind the bar - although I'm not even sure on that, you can be served by a 16 year old now providing there is an adult there to 'authorise' the sales :)
eric_the_man 24-01-2006, 07:32 Hi U and Me,
well it looks like me and shelly have fans, or at least a fan.
in this cut throat business of being a publican, it is so nice to be apreciated by customers rather than being stabbed in the back for doing your job.
I would just like to say that me and shelly have really enjoyed running the white bear and hope that we have put it back on the map for being one of THE places to be seen in Ecclesfield. Hopefully Roger will keep this up, the Square needs it, in order to survive.
in my opinion, and it is only my opinion, the Black Bull is still a pub on its way down, if thats possible after the last stand in Landlord ran it into the ground.
as i said before, we are having a party to beat all parties on Saturday, everyone is welcome.
Eric_The_Man
u and me 24-01-2006, 12:34 yes it is legal to work in a pub but ONLY collecting glasses its illegal to work behind the bar untill your 18.I would like to say THANKYOU to eric the man for apreciating his customers and what they have to say. hope you and shelly have a great life 2gether enjoy it to the full and we ALL hope that your next pub is agreat success like the white bear.
GOOD LUCK 2 THE BOTH OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHELLY WE LOVE YOU, YOU ARE GREAT you deserve the best in life :)
MARTINE YOU ARE SO FUNNY keep up the good work:)
SEE YOU BOTH SOON HOPEFULLY AT A PUB NEAR YOU!:hihi:
sarah_be 24-01-2006, 14:00 You maybe right about working as glass collector, however an employer needs to apply for a work permit for any child otherwise that child is not covered by the employers liability insurance, also a child can only work within the time periods of 7am till 7pm

told_pinz 24-01-2006, 18:52 thankyou for every one who has backed me up.. but as long as i know myself what my age is, then im certain that it shouldn't bother any one else, so who ever said i was 15.. can keep their nose out were it is not wanted. yes martine and shelly are brill and i wish the best of luck to them as they will be staying intouch.
Im sure that if i was 15 i am more grown up than the people who like to make stupid jokes.

Apart from me saying on numerous occasions that you are a bumb blond, have i offended you in any way. only it seems that every time i say anything you seem to come up with some stupid thing to try and down me.
as you will probably know, there are many thousands of people under the age of 18 working in pubs collecting glasses through out the country. as long as they dont serve alcohol and stick strictly to their job then it is perfectly legal.
if we all listend to you then every pub would shut down, people would not work, we would all be on the dole costing the government money paid in by honest tax payers like me.
why dont you give people a break sometime and take a chill pill, sit back and enjoy life for once instead of pulling people down at every oportunity..............
thanks for the vote of confidence Me and U as you say, we will be coming to a poub near you soon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which part of this thread are you refering to?
as you will probably know, there are many thousands of people under the age of 18 working in pubs collecting glasses through out the country. as long as they dont serve alcohol and stick strictly to their job then it is perfectly legal.
Under the age of 18 is a total different matter, than to under the age of 16, the law clearly states from the link I provided that NO CHILD is allowed to work after 7pm, Here is the link again, maybe you should take time to read it http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/education/information-for-parentscarers/in-school-issues/children-working-part-time
if we all listend to you then every pub would shut down, people would not work, we would all be on the dole costing the government money paid in by honest tax payers like me..
I am not asking anyone to listen to me just purely stating a fact of law, however I do have my fear of exploitations in situations like these, you say we would all be on the dole, how can a school child be on the dole? perhaps by not adereing to the law and employing cheap labour you are infact keeping a honest jobseaker on the dole.
why dont you give people a break sometime and take a chill pill, sit back and enjoy life for once instead of pulling people down at every oportunity...............
I would like you to point me in the direction as to where I have pulled people down at every oppertunity, this is a discussion forum and in this particular thread I asked the question is it legal for a 15 year old to be working in a bar, a simple search in google found the link which I posted, which I would have thought you as an employer would have taken these steps, but obviously ignorrance and attitude has prevailed.

Thanks to everyone who came, it was a fab night, totally awsome with plenty of drinking, dancing, fantastic music and light show supplied by Andy Lidds Entertainments (one of the best around) everything went without a hitch and we finally closed the evening about 2.30 am.
Good luck to Roger Cheetham who has now taken over the runing of the white bear, his parting words to us were............ you will be a hard act to follow.
cheers roger.
i will let everyone know when and where we get our new pub in the very near future.

Definately not clicky, as Buffy said (classic rock) she will welcome you, she does a great show, on the same night I do a Disco/Karaoke across the road over at the Stocks which compliments the variety in the village.
Tonight I was busy sorting out my DJ's and venue's, but next Friday I shall be down early and pop in the Bear so that Buffy can buy me a Pint :hihi:
Also Blackbull has a disco on the same night, but I'm not sure who does that, I think it's a 60s/70s night.
So that's three venues to choose from, with Three Types of different Entertainment on the same night.
So speaking on behalf of Buffy and Myself, come and say Hello! to us, and have a " GREAT NIGHT OUT !!!!!!!! "
