Buster 02-01-2006, 05:12 AM Happy New year! Happy New Year! Plenty of money and a cellar full of beer! Horse and a gig and a big fat pig, to serve you all next (this) year! Best Wishes to all who are in and out of Sheffield from Perth WA This is a rhyme we used to recite on the neighbours' doorstep when I was a kid back home. Anyone remember it? Funke88 02-01-2006, 05:25 AM Happy New Year from sunny Florida. Actually it was very foggy and rainy! I actually got all emotional at midnight and had a few tears as I remembered all of my friends and family back home in Sheffield. I'd already called my Mum and Dad at 6pm our time, which was midnight your time. They were at my Auntie and Uncle's house in Netheredge where we spent many a New Years Eve partying with all the family. Back in my teenage years they always had a house packed full of family. Time goes on and those day's are over. I get very melancholy and think about the good times we had. Life goes on.... So hope 2006 is happy and healthy for everyone. tosh13 02-01-2006, 11:52 AM Originally posted by Buster Happy New year! Happy New Year! Plenty of money and a cellar full of beer! Hally New Year to you all. Buster, I rang my friend up in Queensland and just sang that little ditty to her, She wondered what the hell I was talking about. Yes it was a good one to sing at doors we sang it a lot Vera Buster 03-01-2006, 12:30 PM Good memories and thanks for responding. I wonder if it was something that was particular to Sheffield? Bet your friend in Queensland did wonder what it was all about, especially when said in a South Yorkshire dialect. My kids also need an interpreter sometimes! Cheers Alan52 03-01-2006, 12:35 PM HI TO BUSTER I REMEMBER IT WELL WE WOULD GO AROUND THE ARBOURTHORNE AND KNOCK ON PEOPLES DOORS AND SAY THE WORDS FOR MONEY.I THINK THERE WAS A BIT MOOR TO THE SAYING IT WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS .HOLE IN MY STOCKING HOLE IN MY SHOE IF YOU DONT HAVE A PENNY A HALFPENNY WILL DOIF YOU DONT HAVE A HALFPENNY GOD BLESS YOU. hazel 03-01-2006, 01:13 PM What I seem to rememer was first footing If I remember right wasn't it tradition for a dark haired person to knock on the door and wish you good luck for the new year and to hand over a piece of coal. hazel buck 05-01-2006, 07:24 PM Exactly right Hazel. We still do it here in Connecticut. I used to be the dark haired man, and had to save the only piece of coal we had to be used every year. Now I'm white haired, and this house has no fireplace. Luckily, my son has both dark hair and a fireplace. But its a ten mile drive in what is usually icy roads. You are viewing an archive. To view the actual thread click here: Sheffield Forum | |
