View Full Version : History of Ecclesall and the Critchlow family
Hi, I am researching the family of Critchlow who lived in or around Ecclesall in the mid 1800's.
John Critchlow, was a policeman but I don't know where, he is shown on the census records as living in Eccelsall in 1841 to about 1853 ish. He then disappears from all records presumably having died, going to prison or perhaps something else his family remained in the locality.
Can you help me locate information about him or his wife Mary. They had three childre George, Clara and Lilley Maria.
Lilley Maria moved to Wolverhampton where she married my wife's Great, great grandfather Alfred Bonner.
The West Riding Constabulary wasn't formed until 1854-56 so I would like to find out where John Critchlow served as an officer, was he killed on duty, etc?
Please let me know if you can give me any information please no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Thanks. Happy New Year.
The South Yorkshire Police inherited the records of the Sheffield force and deposited them in Sheffield Archives. It is possible to access them if you go through a slightly fussy procedure. The relevant address at the Police Headquarters was as follows when I wrote to them in May 2003:
Deborah Dyer
PR Officer
Press & PR Office
Police Headquarters
Snig Hill
Sheffield
S3 8LY
If you ask this person for permission to see the records she will send you a letter you can show them at the Archives. If you don't live in Sheffield you can get someone else to look for you, but they themselves will have to write and seek permission.
In any case, I am not sure you will find the information you are looking for. The most interesting records are the 'Conduct and Commendation' books which look promising because the catalogue says that they date from 1831. That date is misleading, however. As far as I can tell the first volume was first used in the late 1850s or early 1860s, and all the officers then employed had their earlier details added retrospectively. The first officer in the book enlisted in 1831.
There are some charge books which may list arresting officers. The two that can be examimned (others are too fragile) cover 1852 and 1853. I couldn't find the person I was looking for in these but you may be luckier.
I couldn't find a burial for John in the National Burial Index files for Sheffield I have (but they don't cover all burial grounds). There's no mention of him in the Local Register (a digest of local newspaper stories) which suggests he did not die in the line of duty.
Hugh
Hi Hugh, many thanks for your valuable information, I am grateful to you. It seems that John Critclow was no longer around when Sheffield records began so it looks as though I am at a dead end unless I can find a source of earlier material probably a relative or church records. I will write and view the records mentioned by you on the offf chance that some snippet exists of J C's service. Best Wishes to you. Mike

Hi Peter, thank you very very much, this is definitley the family that I am seeking. John is shown on his daughters marriage cert as a policeman. Thanks for you help. I will continue to research the family and their social background. Best Wishes. Mike
Hi
There is a marriage at Bakewell 2 September 1845 for John CRITCHLOW and Mary FANSHAW, which fits in with the birth of the first child.
The census shows that John was from Bakewell in Derbyshire.

Tuppie
Thank you Tuppie, I am grateful to you. I cannot believe the wealth of information that I am receiving. I would value knowing the sources of the information since I am a novice family historian. Best Wishes. Mike
screamingwitch 01-01-2006, 22:24 Hughw and retep are gems for info!!XX i have recieved info from both in the past, and im sure tuppie is too...many thanx to both for now and also for info recieved in the past,im currently researching the properties/history of hanover street and people who lived there...the sheffield indexers webby site is a good place to start for it, you can search 1841 and 1861 census parts of sheffield and the trade directories

Many thanks Witch, I appreciate the effort that you have made on my behalf.
I am confused now as to why his daughter listed him as a policeman on her marriage certificate, could simply be a mistake of course.
What a wonderful resource this forum is, I wish we had something like it where we live. Happy New Year. Mikejc
The 1841 census index is also available at thewholeshebang (http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/index.html) , and you don't have to register or log in to search it.
Many more transciptions will be appearing on this site. They are currently embarking on the City Road Cemetery burials.

screamingwitch 02-01-2006, 11:21 hi hugh

WITCH XXX
I don't want to go into the shenanigans that lead to the creation of a second indexers site. I will only say that the site I posted a link to is the original site with the original site owner and host. The second site was created without their permission or knowledge.
The 1841 data is the same (except where corrections have been applied on one site only!). There are lots of helpful people on both sites (check out the forums).
Hugh
screamingwitch 02-01-2006, 12:03 yes you are right...theres a wealth of infomation thanx to both sites

Hi,
The only Critchlow I have in my family tree is George who married my mum's aunty Mabel. I would like to contact any relatives of Mabel because I do not really know much about her sister Frances who was my grandmother. I have considered telephoning all the Critchlows in the Sheffield telephone book!!!
I live in Worksop, North Nottinghamshire which is only about 20 miles from Sheffield. I am trying to write all my findings up in a story which I will pass on to my children - who are now grown up. I am only sad that when my mum and grandmother were around I was not really interested in family trees!!
This is part of the Hardy story:
WILLIE & FRANCES HARDY
Willie Hardy born 1861 in Huddersfield (Kirkburton/Shepley) married
Frances
Frances was born 1869 and died 26th November 1952 age 83 years. Her death was notified by Mabel Critchlow.
On the 1881 census his occupation was Turner German Silver.
He lived with his parents and brothers at 20 Weston Street, Sheffield
Frances and Willie Hardy lived at 20 C 4 H Upper Allen Street in the parish of St. George Sheffield.
They were married in 1891 when Frances was 22.
We were always told that Willie was one of the Hardy brothers who both went to either Oxford or Cambridge University.
Willie worked for a time in Argentina one of his daughters
Winnie was born at 42 Calle Oliver Bella Vista.
The other children were all born in Sheffield.
Mabel - born 1888
Emma born 1889
Winnie born 1891 in Argentina
Frances born 1893
Annie born 1895
Mary born 1898
William born 1901
Mabel married a man called George Critchlow who was born in 1892 Ecclesall Bierlow his father (also George) was a boiler repairer/fitter. His mother was called Rose born 1872 her mother born 1841 was called Mary.
Mabel and George lived at 48 Washington Road Sheffield.
She was living there in 1952.
George had three brothers
Bernard born 1901,
Harry born 1898 and
Tom born 1894.
Hope this is of some help.

Best wishes and a Happy New Year
