View Full Version : The 'Carry On' Movies.
(Forgive me (and merge me) if this has been discussed before - the search for 'Carry On' threw up 78 pages...)
I'm sat here watching 'Carry On Camping'; and knowng the series quite well, I think this is the ultimate Carry On movie. Well in it's stride, with huge innuendo, before it became too "knowing" and self-referencing. It's soooo good, quick, funny and ... dare I say it? Smart.
My favourite though is "Carry On Screaming!"
What do you think?
Hehe, they are so beautifully contrived... I mean conceived. ;)
I love the way a 5 minute scene where they girls get into the coach had all those little details in place, like the school name, the iron railings, the plaque... all so Kenneth Williams can pull a face at Hattie Jacques wearing a yellow t-shirt with the school name "Chayste Place" over her ample bosom.
Wonderful, simply wonderful!
spyro2000 30-12-2005, 00:13 Yeah ive got it on to.
I like this one, and also like Carry on Nurses ;)
These sorts of films are all time classics, just like the On The Buses films, and the Confessions of a.... films
This film is also making me feel very nostalgic (which is strange because it was made before I was born).
Has 'Carry On' in some way shaped our memory of our past? Why does it seem so familiar?
Beakerzoid 30-12-2005, 00:36 I get a lot of stick at work for saying that I love the Carry On films (except for Columbus..but i don't consider that canon). I have the full collection on DVD, and can always guarantee they will make me laugh when I watch them.
WallBuilder 30-12-2005, 01:20 I grew up watching these wonderful films and even though nowadays I can almost rrecite large bits of dialogue I still like watching them. One of my friends is a petite blonde nurse and it took her ages before she figured out why I'd started calling her Barbara.
It's interesting now that I've got internet access trying to track down the names of the many young ladies who had smaller roles in these films.
mega_monty 30-12-2005, 01:31 I like Carry On At Your Convenience, where they are all working at the toilet manufacturers
"Boggs and Co" :hihi:
Infact I like them all, seen them all loads of times, but every time you put on on they always cheers you up
spyro2000 30-12-2005, 02:06 I sometimes watch just so I can hear Sid James' crusty laugh :hihi:
Dirtiest laugh on earth that is.
My personal favourites are Carry on Screaming, Carry on up the Khyber and Carry on Follow that Camel.
The dinner party scene in 'Khyber', where the tribesmen are shooting the place up and the Brits are sitting have dinner as if nothing's happening is great, and there's a lovely bit where Charles Hawtrey starts to fire a machine gun which has been sabotaged, to find it plays 'player piano' type music rather than fires bullets.
In 'Screaming' the 'Foul....feet....smell....something awful' exposition scene is fun, as is the constant 'Frying Tonight' gag!
Cardinal 30-12-2005, 08:02 The 'Carry On' films are great...even though nowadays you're not supposed to say that. Like others, 'Carry on Screaming' and 'Carry on up the Khyber' figure highly for me but.....my fave is probably 'Carry On Don't Lose Your Head' with Sid James ay his best as Sir Rodney Effing ("with two Fs")/the 'Black Fingernail'. Top send up of the French Revolution etc!! ;)
pk014b7161 30-12-2005, 09:36 that charles hawtrey ( spelling) still cracks me up ive only got to look at him carry on films still make me laugh (the old cast )
not those others they tried julian clary etc not funny
koenigsinger 30-12-2005, 11:11 Carry on Camping was a corker, as was carry on Screaming, but for me the all time monster of them all was 'Khyber'... so many laughs , so many catchphrases to pinch... anyone for a spot of tiffin? :heyhey:
Kirsty_87 30-12-2005, 13:07 We have got most of them on dvd, i think ...
My favourite is Carry On Up The Khyber. Charles Hawtrey is hillarious in all of the carry on's he is in.
caramac55 31-12-2005, 03:45 What a shame they dont make films like that anymore, they tried with carry on columbus, (what a failure). its just not the same without the old cast. I can watch these films again and again and still they make me laugh. I'm afraid we just dont have actors/comedians like them anymore and hey, a lot of the gags they used would not be seen as polliticaly correct anymore, (more's the shame). my favourite has to be carry on camping. I have every one on DVD and if ever I feel a little down I just put one on, its sure to make you feel better.
summer1955 31-12-2005, 08:45 the carry on films were the greatest they still make you laugh no matter how many times you watch them.
we have bought the all lot got them from deagostini
Carry On Constable, Screaming & Cabby are my top 3! Classic's!
StarSparkle 31-12-2005, 14:23 Not the done thing to say so, but for a really good laugh, it's hard to beat a "Carry On" film. They simply wouldn't get made today - the PC brigade would have a fit!
I used to love the silly names of characters like Dr Killmore :D, and Kenneth Williams was always wonderful. Loved him when I was little.
Getting repetitive now, but my all-time favourite's got to be "Carry on Screaming" (it actually quite scared me as a child :) ). Also Don't Lose Your Head and "Carry on Cleo" and "Carry on Spying".
StarSparkle :)
Star Sparkle has hit the nail on the head !!
It's amazing how popular films like , " The Carry On ......." series are and how true that the P.C. brigade would probably ban any new ones . It's a sign of how much Britain has been influenced by a tiny media minority . I wonder why we don't stand up for ourselves ?
The , " Carry On ......" films were great and are so popular because they contain lots that's particularly British : - a love of the , 'double entendre ' , a bit of vulgarity , a bit of nostalgia and last but not least , a bit of sex .
From time immemorial the British have loved to laugh at variations of this type of humour ----------limericks , ballads , [Chaucer ] , Marie Lloyd , Max Miller .........et al .......
Let's rue the day when the miserable acid-faced P.C. brigade put a stop to it all------------in case we offend somebody !
