The queue was so long! My ex husband remembers there being a food hall in Pauldens, but I can't remember that. (which is odd for me, and my memory for facts) I also remember being hauled around the Roberts Brothers store, which was just down from Pauldens. It's amazing, isn't it? These wonderful, huge Sheffield stores, like Cockaynes, Walshes, Pauldens, Roberts Brothers, Blanchards, Banners, all either gone completely, or subsumed into national chains. EDIT - come to think of it - I dont' think the lady I am remembering had any brothers or sisters. i do vaguely remember a couple of the butchers in the Food Hall - without being too rude one of the food hall managers tended to be a bit of a bully and there was one guy in the butchery department who did'nt give two figs. He was so laid back and when one of the staff got a bit upset he always gave some pretty good advise. coyleys 30-12-2005, 16:49 Originally posted by docmel I worked there for a short time during the changeover from Pauldens to Debenhams - that would have been about 1972 I think I worked at Pauldens then Debenhams (Heelbar) when i was a lad, good times, plenty of parties, then i married a lass from cosmetics, that's when the party stopped. koritsi 30-12-2005, 18:42 Originally posted by docmel Koritsi Sorry - should have read 'Is' her name Penny? The man in question turned out to be Frankie Vaughan and she went from being a fangirl to hating him in seconds! :hihi: peterw 03-02-2006, 14:06 Plain Talker - Sorry to disappoint you about ‘huge, wonderful Sheffield stores’. Pauldens was a Manchester-based department store and I was lucky enough to be living nearby when it went up in flames during the early 1950s. What a spectacle that was! It started on the second floor just as I was coming out of the nearby Grosvenor Cinema, and it spread rapidly, lighting up the area all night! DianaH 15-10-2006, 14:05 I've a gorgeous wardrobe, tall boy & dressing table manufactured by them. Really good quality mahogany & birds eye maple. It's for sale as rearranging house. If you're a Pauldens fan and admire this period you'd love this. Let me know. DavidRa 15-10-2006, 19:09 Plain Talker - Sorry to disappoint you about ‘huge, wonderful Sheffield stores’. It may have been based in Manchester but we had one in Sheffield,Roberts and Atkinsons were the only stores exclusively Sheffield I miss your point. mini b 17-10-2006, 18:16 Hi plain talker i worked at Blanchards they were taken over by Wigfalls, i then went on to work at Pauldens hated it as it did not have the family feel of Blanchards. normanmarina 17-10-2006, 18:41 Remember going in to the january sale at pauldens clutching xmas money, got an action man armoured car and and a redheaded action man!!!!funny what you can recall.:) Tazz070299 18-10-2006, 21:00 I remember queueing right up the stairs from the basement, as a very small child, with my mother waiting to see "Father Christmas". The queue was so long! PT I too remember going there to see Father Christmas, but my favourite was the Grotto at Moorfoot, on what was wasteland the rest of the year. My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I seem to remember it being like walking through a maze of christmas trees before seeing him. The real treat was then being taken to Redgates to look at the toys, and the train set they had running. My sister and the man she married also worked there, and yes they are still married 36 years on. Phil worked in the loading bay. Chelle01 28-05-2008, 17:32 I remember Pauldens. My gran, God bless her, carried on calling Debenhams Pauldens for many years. I remember loads of other old shops, many like Grace Brothers on the telly, there seemed to be more of a special awe about shops and banks when I was a child. Perhaps people parted with their money less easily for expensive items then and a shopping trip really was more of a treat than a chore. sband 28-05-2008, 18:13 I used to work for boltons the bakers in chapeltown we supplied some of the confectionary for pauldens sband 28-05-2008, 18:17 I used to work for boltons the bakers on station road in chapeltown we used to supply some of the confectionary for pauldens when they were open. billhaley 05-06-2008, 19:42 I worked there for about 5 years in the carpet dept with Len Woollen, Gordon Ives, etc I remember Mr Lofthouse was the store director and was a lovely polite gentleman. His secretary was a nice lady, Miss Tee I think her name was. I played for the football team along with Eric Bollington who was a tv engineer, and his buddy Reg Kershaw who tragically died young. Several other lads from the firm played, and I remember we played a cup-tie up at Limb Lane and Mr Lofthouse said he would come and support us and so most of the dept managers turned up as well to cheer us on. Great days and some lovely ladies worked there. swfcsteve 09-06-2008, 23:34 I remember Pauldens, my mum used to work there from about the mid-seventies till she sadly dies in 1988. She worked on the food dept, then when it closed moved onto lingerie.
